Looking for a consensus among those who have created sites for their work. Are there better companies out there than GoDaddy for domain registration and web hosting?

I'm truly a moron when it comes to this stuff so any advice would be appreciated - thanks,

Anthony

The domain can be bought from anywhere.  And it usually runs you the same, about 10 bucks a year.  You can buy it from blogger or whatever.  Hosting it will prove different, unless you want a blog style domain.  The blogger is the way to go because they do it all for you.  But it's very limited in what you can do opposed to hosting on a server yourself.

Making a website can prove challenging, though.  If you don't pay for a template or make one yourself it can be clunky, cumbersome and loaded with trial and error.  I know html coding and have made web templates using Sherif and am currently working on one off and on, actually.  But it's tough if you don't know what you're doing.  This is where you'd most likely bring someone in who is skilled enough to help you.

If you just want the domain and a basic place for you to showcase your work -- Blogspot is probably your best bet.  You can, if you know HTML, create a template for it and even give it pages and buttons.  It'd give it more of a website feel than a blog feel.

That can all be done for 10 bucks flat.  Name - Hosting and all.

Wordpress - I opened up an account bud didn't take it seriously and haven't started on it. But I know few writers who are quite fond of it. It's free too (used to be half a year ago at least - last time I checked).
Good Luck

Thanks guys, and yes Balt, I'm looking to build something more than just a link to my scripts - I know nothing about it but I know people who do.

Mike - thanks, I'll take a look at Cornetto's site.

In addition to godaddy I found these sites, which look good - anyone know anything about them?

I use webs.com. It's free, the software is incredibly easy to use (if you watch the tutorials and spend maybe half an hour playing around with it), and I actually think you can create very clean, perfectly decent looking websites. As I say, I've had my site for over a year, and though I don't do much with it I've had absolutely no problems and could do a lot more with it if I wanted. At some point I'm going to transfer the hosting of all my scripts to there from SS, so as not to clog up Don's servers anymore! Oh, and it's free. Did I mention it was free?

You might as well take a look, since it's an opportunity for a free plug.

So yeah, I'd recommend Webs. Hope that helps!

Guess who's back? Back again?

I used to use a site called Yola that was free and good. Simple interface and the boards were informative.

Not sure what it's like these days as I have too much other crap to do to update a site. I'll start on that once I move house.

They're still there at Yola

1 & 1 webhosting is a great turn key site. You can begin with a small page until you get comfortable and expand from there. They have templates for pre-formated pages and packages starting from arounf $23.00 per 6 months.

I use webs.com as well.  Pretty basic, but it works as far as sending people to a place where all my work is consolidated on a single page.

Link for mine is in my sig.

Thanks guys for all the advice - this page though will be for a singular project and will have a unique url. Led, I'll check out your suggestion because that seems to be a domain registrar/web hosting service.
