Went to see it on a wet afternoon the other day. There aren't many films that drag me to a cinema these days, apart from those by Tarantino or Nolan. Or maybe Fincher or O'Russell. Or Ridley Scott. At a push. I'll wait for the DVD, thanks.
This was not going to be one of them. The idea of Leo and co replicating the life of one of those Wall Street wanker bankers wasn't a draw. Until I recalled watching The Departed with an audience, one of the best experiences I've had in a cinema. And I kept my clothes on.
So, I was hoping to repeat the experience. Scorcese is getting tooth long and you never know how many more chances you'll get to see a new film by him. I'd heard a few things about sex and nudity but I took little notice. All part of the hype methinks.
There was a retired couple in front of me in the queue. They sat just in front of me inside the cinema. I could hear them tutting once the film started and arses flashed and drugs were imbibed. On screen, I mean. I only had a soft drink, honest. The old folks lasted about twenty minutes before they walked out, bless.
This film is long. Arse numbingly long. But I wouldn't want to cut anything out of it. It's a hell of a journey.
I walked out with my numb arse and wasn't sure what to think. After a while I found myself giggling at the memories of certain scenes. Days later I can still remember almost all of it. It made a huge impression.
DiCaprio is a fine actor. But, like quite a few other actors he's nearly always playing a version of himself. That said, he does things in this others would struggle with.
Matthew McConaughey appears near the start for an all too brief time.
Jonah Hill will win an Oscar as best supporting actor. And he deserves it too.
Most of the characters on screen in this film are not likable people. You wouldn't want to meet them in real life. But they are interesting and engaging. And funny.
This is a fine movie. I was surprised Scorcese could make something this good at his age. He's not lost his edge. Far from it.
Definitely dug it. Career best performances from DiCaprio AND Hill. The scene with the Lemmon Quaaludes... well, you know.
The film doesn't hold a candle to Goodfellas or Casino but those flicks are two of the best of all time and so good, you can't help but enjoy the nostalgia. I also think despite the obvious similarities, WOWS is it's own film and damned if it wasn't entertaining. I watched some interviews with DiCaprio where he suggested the film as sort of a modern day Caligula. Spot on.
It WAS too long. Can't argue with anybody there. But it's got so much exuberance, it's a while before it starts to drag. A while by three-hour-movies-that-drag standards, anyway. And while it's not a deep film per se, I do think it had a message that's relevant to what's going on today with wealth and the like, even if it's an extremely simple one.
Solid flick. One of my favorites of last year, for sure.
Most will not be shocked to hear that I did not enjoy this one very much at all.
Way over the top, way too long, way too many monologues, just way to muich period...kind like the Big 80's themselves.
I really thought I'd love this, but I can actually say I didn't even like it and despised the breaking of the 4th wall by Leo over and over...and over...and over...
I found this depressing, and although supposedly funny, for me, it was cringe induing more often than not. The complete wastedness of the characters, the mean spirited and dowright sad lives these peeps lived just wasn't amusing to me.
DeCaprio and Hill were indeed strong here. Actually, there were a number of fine performances, but there's no reason for a 3 hour run time in a flick like this.
Without overanalyzing - all the actors did well. Agree with Rendevous - Jonah Hill is exceptional in it. This is a funny funny movie. I'm glad I watched it.
Too long for the theatre. I watched it at home. If you're a couch lover you better rent it.
Over the top but somehow believable - and I have no idea how they managed to pull it off. Looking for the script...
