Last year I created "Haunted Scrapyard" in northern Michigan. This year instead of having a walk through attraction, I want to create a film for people to watch. I am not a writer, only a film maker, but these are the "tags" I was thinking.

  • Hillbillies
  • Gore
  • Girls
  • Vintage
  • Humorous
  • Northern Michigan (Mio, Tawas, Hale, etc.)
  • Duvall brothers

Would have to be around 30-45 pages, and would like to get the ball rolling ASAP, seeing as September is tomorrow. Question, concerns, more information, just contact me.

I had to look up the Duvall Bros. I'm assuming it's these fellas...?

In 2003, two brothers, Raymond and Donald Duvall, were arrested for the murders of David Tyll and Brian Ognjan. A witness reported that they had seen the brothers beat David and Brian to death outside a bar in Mio, Michigan. Others reported that the Duvalls bragged about feeding the remains of David and Brian to their pigs. The witness did not come forward until 2003 due to fear from the brothers. Both were convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. Neither David nor Brian's remains have ever been found.

(from an "Unsolved Mysteries" article)

I'm a bit south of you Jade. (Genesse County) but this sounds nice. One word kind of grabbed me . "Vintage". You might want to elaborate on that for clarity, First things that popped in my brain was either retro 70s/80s (so much for cell phones!) or newsreel like footage like Texas Chainsaw Massarce,. There was a halfway decent hillbilly horror film about a year ago called Pug  but I'm thinking you might be more Wrong Turn or House of 1000 Horrors.

The hunor part. Is is it camp humor, coffin humor, (' Tales From The Crypt like twist) horror-comedy?

Girls and gore? You'll have very  little shortage 'round here....

Shame this ciomes right after the 7wk challenge. This criteria would have made great potential for a OWC.

Yes, exactly who I was talking about.

Vintage like Death Proof, Cabin Fever, Lord of the Flies, Texas Chainsaw, Wrong Turn, The Devils Rejects, etc. For the humor, I like satire. Two detectives show up at crime scene, there's a dead body. They crouch down, one gets some blood on his finger, licks it off, and says "it's blood".

Some of us did a little brain storming last night on how we would write it and the story line we came up with kinda goes something like this:

     >> Opening titles with driving sequence, five friends in car.
     >> Stop at old gas station to pick some things up, charter build, two couples, one fifth wheel.
     >> They get lost, show the local town (Hale?).
     >> Find their way to the “Haunted Scrapyard” to catch the “movie”.
     >> Park, no one is around. Three people get out, one couple stays in car.
     >> Couple move forward, third wheel gets split up, the other two move forward
     >> They come upon the projector that we are showing the movie on, no movie playing...
          - So the people are watching a movie that took place where they’re sitting.
          - Because we are showing the movie on the same property we are shooting it on.
          - That way when someone runs out with a chainsaw, we can have someone in the audience with a chainsaw.
     >> Music comes on, girl starts dancing on the stage we have.
     >> Hillbillies come out and hold guy hostage and want to see girl strip.
     >> One hillbilly goes on stage and forces girl to make out with him.
     >> The other hick holds guy hostage, licks his neck, puts hand down front of his pants.
          - Something pushing the limits.

Really open to any ideas though, just let me know what you come up with! Need a script by the end of this week to get it shot by the end of the month. We are going to play it every Friday/Saturday night of October with an after party. Everyone who was apart of the production will have a special spot.

Looking forward to reading something!

I'll say.
I was kind of digging the movie within a movie hint, kind of like Argento's Demons or Carpenter's In The Mouth Of Madness.  But I'm quoting this part for a reason.

Am I to understand that's not in the script being filmed?

No, it's not a movie within another movie.

(REAL LIFE) - We are putting on our haunted house this year again called "Haunted Scrapyard", instead of having a walkthrough attractio, we just want to show a movie/party.

BUT...

(MOVIE) - The location of the movie is based right where the audience is sitting.

Get what I'm saying?

JadeC,

Post some pictures of the site where you'll be filming and showing the film.

Do you still have the school bus and the mini van with the red graffiti on it?

This is going to take a lot of skill to pull off.  You need to have a story going on the big screen, interrupted by live action that ties into what's going on, on the screen.

Does this take place in a drive-in, or an open air theater?

Jordan.

I believe it's like Vacancy when Luke Wilson watches the snuff video of some chick/dude getting beaten the heck to death in the same room they're in.  Kinda like that, only at a drive-in theater in the sticks.

Yeah, that's the location!

I hope you understand the concept of the movie being shot where it’s shown, I think that would be somewhat of a cool concept to incorporate. The property that I have in Hale, “Haunted Scrapyard”, is creepy around the scrap section at night and, when we start showing this film in October that’s where we will be projecting it. In the woods at the, "Haunted Scrapyard", with a generator. We plan on shooting the movie on the same property, so when people come to watch it, they will be sitting right where it was shot. Get it?

So… The event this year would be us, "Haunted Scrapyard", showing a movie about a group of people being terrorized on their way to watch a movie at the “Haunted Scrapyard”. But there was no movie when they got there...

Maybe a twist at the end?

Idk, let me know what you’re thinking.

Jade,

I get the idea and I really like it.

I have a couple ideas but I need to know a few things:

  • What does the theater area look like?
  • Is there any way you can post some pictures of the theater, the road to the theater, and maybe some convenience stores that are on the way to the theater?
  • Do you have access to an old car that you can position on the edge of the theater?
  • What kind of projector are you using?  Digital or Film?
  • Are you going to be selling popcorn?
  • How many performers are you going to have available on the day you show the film?

I'd like to incorporate as much of the surrounding area as possible to make it believable as possible.

Jordan

I have a short titled, DAMNED YANKEE, here that you may be interested in.

It's a strange take on zombies and people who live in the secluded town of Songless.

It's posted in the short section or you can email me at skyburg@hotmail.com and I'll forward it to you.

I forgot to say it's 27 pages and 6th place winner at American Gem.

My phone (which I'm posting with) wouldn't let me edit my post....

Sounds great Cindy, I'm looking forward to reading it!

Nomad, the theatre is right in the middle of the "Haunted Scrapyard". Cars will be all around, and we will be projecting the film digitally onto a large wooden structure with a sheet stretched on it. We will have a few actors there at night, and I suppose we will have popcorn. So it's kind of like a drive in, except you sit, and you're in the middle of a scrapyard.
