I read these books when I was younger and decided to see how they hold up. If anything, my youth did not allow me to appreciate their true greatness!

It's a historical fiction series following the exploits of a soldier in the British army during the Napoleonic Wars. That soldier also happens to be a complete bad-ass with classic action hero facial scars and giant Calvary sword.

The writing is really quite good. There's depth to his character. Nonstop tension. Battle scenes so vivid you'll taste the saltpeter. Did I mention Calvary sword decapitations!?

I preferred the books. They were written by Bernard Cornwell. You should check out some of his other stuff.

Yeah, I'm talking about the books. I re-read all the Sharpe books recently and they were glorious.

I don't think I've tried any of Bernard Cornwell's other writing though. Actually, I vaguely remember starting the Last Kingdom series and not liking it as much. Cuz Richard Sharpe's not in it! If he were to time-travel to medieval times and start fighting knights maybe I'd read it.

Easy reading historical fiction. I used to read a lot of the short westerns too.

The only thing with the Sharpe books was that I didn't read them in order. It didn't really matter much, I suppose... I'd be hearing the story retold about Sharpe snatching the French Eagle standard but I hadn't read that one yet and I was eager to get hold of it. I'm pretty sure I heard the story mentioned in a few books before I actually got around to reading it.

Haha, yeah, certain information gets repeated a lot. The order is not a huge problem. Every Sharpe book is pretty much the same thing anyways:

Bad guys conspire against our hero. Our hero gets outnumbered and surrounded by French troops. Our hero proceeds to shoot or stab everyone, then sleeps with the hot chick.
