On a nostalgia kick as of late and have been rewatching a bunch of family dramas from my early childhood. I hadn't seen this flick in probably 20 years, but it's always stuck around in my mind.
I was actually really surprised how well this movie holds up, despite the big money shot(the famous image of the whale jumping over the kid on the movie poster) being horrible CGI by today's standards.
What really impressed me though was the acting. Particularly from the main kid Jesse(played by Jason James Richter) and Keiko the whale. It's amazing what they were able to accomplish with that little boy and that massive animal. And besides the terrible CGI shoot at the end, I can't tell when the whale is real or fake.
It's got a fun, heartwarming story, a really good cast, and a great soundtrack. Michael Jackson killed it with "Will You Be There." So good.
Maybe it's just the nostalgia talking, but this movie hit me in the feels real good. It's a movie I'd no doubt show my kids, if I were to ever have any.
So yeah... I recommend Free Willy. What about you guys? Does anyone have a soft spot for this '90s family movie?
