SimplyScripts Screenwriting Discussion Board  /  Contests - Screenwriting and Filmmaking  /  One Week Challenge!!
Posted by: dogglebe (Guest), July 4th, 2008, 11:53am
The summer ONE WEEK CHALLENGE is on!

The powers that be has caught up with all of his Simply Script stuff and has scheduled the next OWC to behin on July 18th.

For those of you new here, the OWC is an excercise to see how well people write under pressure.  I will announce a genre and theme and, those wishing to participate, will have one week to write and submit a script (15 pages or less).

Participation is voluntary.

This is not a competition; no gambling!

Sounds good.

Though I'm relatively new here, I'm definitely up for this. Looking forward to it.

Good stuff, hopefully I'll have broadband in my new flat by then.

AB...what odds are you offering?:)

Usually not one for a bump but I figure this could use a little top billing being it's one week away. On a unrelated note, busty Scriptgirl in a Yankee jersey, sweeeeeeet.

A week from now!? Who can wait that long!?

Dang.

It isn't a contest.  It is a challenge.  We are all winners.

Wait, this is supposed to simulate being under pressure? Dang, I'd done like five of these and never figured that out. Submitted two for one of them... Pressure?

I like the idea of going into this kind of thing totally cold and seeing what comes.

It's nice to be able to provide and get some feedback from others and shorts tend to keep people focussed on what counts-- or make decisions on what they figure should count anyways.

Looking forward to the next OWC.

It would be cool to have everyone ready for like a two hour challenge and just see what people can come up with.  I think that would actually be REALLY interesting.

Well, the reason it's a week long challenge is mostly for time zone considerations so everyone has a fairly equal time to get it done. If you were doing a couple hour challenge, you'd have to make it at least 24 hours so everyone had a chance. Sure, you could announce a two hour block, but you'd be on the honor system on submission and you'd have to find a happy time for everyone who wants to participate.

I'd want to see a one week (or month) challenge where you have to come up with a full length screenplay. Now there's a challenge. Crank out a first draft, and then rewrite it before the month is out.

That makes sense.  You could probably do it in some confusing way where we split it up into like four different time zone chunks and give each one a different genre and theme, releasing those at the appropriate time...but that gets a little confusing.

Full length would be pretty cool though, because that would be downright challenging (week or month) to confess, I usually write these one-week things the day their due.  That wouldn't exactly be the case with the full length.  It'd be interesting to see who could put forth something decent.

Hey George,

I like that idea! Maybe that's exactly what I need in order to actually finish a feature!  ;D

I'll bounce the idea off of Don...after this OWC.  It could be pretty interesting.

I agree. Writing a full length in a month would be a real challenge! Sure, we can all churn out drafts, but: How good is that draft going to be?

This kind of challenge really shows how some people rise to the occasion because of both skill and talent.

It would be a marvelous opportunity and at the same time very scary.

Right now, I think I would be very afraid of hitting "a post" button for that. A hundred pages or so of clean copy-- of character-meshed-with-plot-holding-down-the-fort copy... and all of "the other" details.

Oh-- lions and tigers and bears oh my! Why-oh-why-oh-why-oh-why.

Sending love to all simplyscripts' die-hards,

Sandra

You may not have a problem with it, but a lot of others have complained that the OWC are two hard.

I guess you're just special, George.

This is the quietest build-up ever...

I'm actually hoping for a smaller crowd than last time.  What was it?  Forty scripts?

Both Merlin and Merry say Meow and Mellow!

I plan on participating in this OWC.

Hopefully, I can get a lot of crits done for it.

Has there a superhero themed competition before? I'd actually enjoy that, where we create our own hero or villian and write a small tale of them.

Would make sense with TDK out now...which btw, was brilliant.

Well that idea gone then Bry, once you suggest something it's gone...the OWC is to write something you're not expecting and usually something you'd never think of writing about.  That's what makes it a challenge....that's why i've been jotting down ideas for a Western about an Alien Invasion and a Drama about the race to be the fastest sperm, just trying to stay ahead of the competition ;-)

I don't like super heroes and I don't like comedy... so, that's pretty much guaranteed that's what it'll be.

I would like suspense/impenetrable egg though...

But when you combine the two?  Ahh...gold.

I really have nothing to offer here, I just needed to distract myself from the "The Joker's a filthy murderer" thread.

Well, that and the Face the Truth tour taking place near my work on my lunch break.  Look it up if you're unfamiliar with it.
