I was reading the 'New Celtx Release' thread a short while ago and saw that steven8 is now just a 'Guest User'. This seems very odd, considering that, for instance, his SoulShadows script was only posted lest than two weeks ago. He commented on at least one of my scripts, and I remember reading some stuff of his I liked...if you're gone, Steven, then best of luck and have a good one. If not, then what's happened?
Anyway, this got me thinking about other stuff that just seemed to disappear. Well, this, and an article today on the BBC News website called 'What happened to Second Life?' So, I thought I'd start a 'Whatever Happened To...' thread, where people could occasionally post about stuff that seemed to vanish, and perhaps if anyone was interested they could try and find out and then post a 'WEHT' of their own. I know there's a site for this (www.weht.net), but I was thinking more 'stuff' or crazes than people. It can be movie-related, or not.
I know I've already mentioned steven8, but I thought I'd throw another one out for public consumption. So...
Whatever happened to...The Golden Compass sequels?
I hated the first film, but it wasn't universally panned, it made close to $400 million worldwide, and it did win an Oscar (for Visual Effects). And yet now, nearly two years after its release, there is nothing to be heard about the sequels. No director attached, no writers, no release date...nothing. I know the producers were determined to carry on, but I suppose if the sums didn't add up, that was never going to happen. I tried to find an official answer online, and eventually did: according to this article - http://www.independent.co.uk/a.....onicles-1213848.html - Warner Bros. have pulled the plug.
I suppose, then it joins the ranks of 'franchises that weren't', along with the Alex Rider series, Jumper, The Seeker: Dark is Rising, Inkheart, and many more. Maybe if the first one wasn't such a stinking pile of crap, they'd have been given a chance to make 2 and 3. Having seen the first one, I'm glad they weren't...
Okay, that one was quite easy. Anyone got a WEHT they'd like to look into?
Steven8 left of his own free will. I don't know his reasons, but no one here asked him to go.
Golden Compass? That's easy. The writer pissed everyone off and made it into a circus. There is such a thing as bad publicity and whether you like it or not, the church segment of the world holds a lot of pull. Pullman's remarks did not endear that particular segment to his books. We may have a freedom of religion in the US, as soon as Pullman made his book overtly anti-religious, it brought out the church crowd, and Warner Bros. likely wanted no part of that kind of battle.
This differs from the church segment attacking Harry Potter in that JK Rowling never attacked anything religious in the book or story, and so it was just "a bunch of fanatics." When you say "I killed God at the end," the chances of pissing at least someone off are pretty good. Of course I flipped right to the end of the last book to find out what he did, and I could see how that would upset some people.
EDIT: I'd be interested to see if anything has changed since that article with was done on the heels of last year's little disaster.

I found this, actually, since I remembered him making this comment a few months back on the How Serious Are You? thread:
Posted: August 17th, 2009, 10:35pm
I am not serious about writing professionally. The idea of seeing your name on the screen as writer of a major motion picture is very exciting, but I know in my heart that that world is not for me. I love reading scripts, and writing scripts, but I know that I'll never be a professional writer. I haven't been very active lately. Mostly posting in the General Section(s) I'm waiting for my rotation on the Soul Shadows, enjoying the input, then I may just disappear.
A good friend has convinced me to get back into the art biz and wants me to illustrate his comic book idea, so I've been shaking the rust off.
That solves that, then. He just did exactly what he said he'd do. So long, Steven. Hope the comic book goes well. And if anyone wonders why I could instantly go and dig that post up...I have a strange memory.

I think exactly the opposite. The studio sanitized the film and took out the anti-religious stance, totally destroying the concept of the novel.
They also hired a crap director who cut and chopped away all the mystery of the novel and left a confusing and childish mess.
The result is a film that was a terrible introduction to one of the great modern fantasy worlds. The sequels would have made a loss because no-one would have wanted to watch them. The die-hards fans hated it and it made no real sense to the new initiates.
I don;t think for a second that anyone really cares what Christains think, the more nosie they make about it the better. It's just free publicity. It just wasn't going to make its money back because they ruined it.
It's a real shame when studios make such a pigs ear of films because that's it. It's gone forever. There will never be a definitive version of such a great book made on film.
It would piss me the hell off if I was a novellist and they gave a guy like the American Pie Director my film. A crazy decision.

Not entirely true. When The Lord of the Rings was done in 1978, it was a part 1, and nothing else was made of it. The stories are enduring enough, however, that it had another shot, and something great was made of it. As long as someone loves reading the books, someone will want to try again at some point. As long as the book has fans, it'll have an audience.

LOTR is something of an exception though as it's one of the most famous of all novels.
The Dark Materials is toast unfortunately.
Seems I was a bit harsh on Weiz before, as it seems he fought quite hard to keep the story intact, but New-Line pressured him into changing the story. He even resigned and was brought back on later on only because of a plea by Pullman.
New-Line had to restructure financially after the flop of the film. If studios haven't got the balls to make films properly they should fuck of and let soemone else do it. IMHO of course.

Hehe, studios haven't learned that in the first hundred years. I doubt they'll learn it going forward. They will "rework" something to what they think people will want to see instead of trusting the creative talents of those in the middle of it. I'll bet one reason some of the greatest films out there are as good as they are is because the studios actually did stay out of them and let the creative teams do their thing. The Golden Compass may be a good example of what happens when a studio decides how the story should be made. There are tons of those examples out there so. Most of them are sequels.
Yeah I never got the whole Golden Compass movie thing. Why on earth would a studio pick a Satanic theme book and chop out all the satanism? What's the point? There is a dozen other fantasy books I can think of that New Line could have spent their money on and produced.
They where on a good thing with Lord Of the Rings so they should have stuck with that style of fantasy and did Dragonlance or Sword of Shannara. Why they wasted money on a fantasy book that bashes the Catholic church is beyond me.

Whoa, steady on - anti-Church is one thing, but Satanism is quite another.
Heh! Obviously you haven't read the Satanic Bible. Don't believe the hype, the Satanic Bible is NOT what the media portrays it to be. Every theme of the downside of organised religion in Phil Pullman book is lifted right out of the Satanic Bible.
Whatever happened to Edward Norton and Ryan Gosling? Just as they seemed poised to take over Hollywood they went back under the radar. As a fan of both of them I'm a little disappointed.
Last thing I saw Norton in was that cop thing with Farrell. I heard he's got a small part in that Gervais Lying thing too. Hang on, less of this vagueness... IMDB come to me...
# The Avengers (2012) (announced) (rumored) .... Bruce Banner # Motherless Brooklyn (2010) (announced) .... Lionel Essrog # Stone (2010) (post-production)
# "Modern Family" .... Izzy LaFontaine (1 episode, 2009) - Great Expectations (2009) TV episode .... Izzy LaFontaine # Leaves of Grass (2009) .... Bill Kincaid / Brady Kincaid # The Invention of Lying (2009) (uncredited) .... Cop # Pride and Glory (200 .... Ray Tierney
Quoted from Ed Norton as I am Jack's complete lack of surprise
[Tyler points a gun into the Narrator's mouth] Narrator: [voiceover] People are always asking me if I know Tyler Durden. Tyler Durden: Three minutes. This is it - ground zero. Would you like to say a few words to mark the occasion? Narrator: ...i... ann... iinn... ff... nnyin... Narrator: [voiceover] With a gun barrel between your teeth, you speak only in vowels. [Tyler removes the gun from the Narrator's mouth] Narrator: I can't think of anything. Narrator: [voiceover] For a second I totally forgot about Tyler's whole controlled demolition thing and I wonder how clean that gun is.
Norton's CV, despite the odd blip, is impressive. He's one of the good guys.
Now, Ryan Duckling....
# Blue Valentine (2010) (post-production) # All Good Things (2010) (completed) .... David Marks
As for Steven8, sadly missed. Hey, I know he's not dead. You know what what I mean.
This is slightly off topic but getting back to LOTR... i wouldn't mind a bit if someone if someone in the future did a new version of the novels. Ok, Jackson did well with the first two, but ROTK was woeful! The CGI completely fucked up the Battle of Pelennor Fields by having that stupid green mist overpower evrything! In the book, that battle goes for hours with Aragorn and Eomer meeting up in the middle of the carnage. And as for thet ridiculous sequence with Legolas on the Oliphant? Pure garbage to cater for kiddy Star Wars fans. This issue has bugged me for 6 years. I'd love to see a darker LOTR some day, with more blood and gore like in the books.

Ach! We've got to get out of this trap Before this decadence saps our wills I've got to be strong and try to hang on Or else my mind, may well snap And my life will be lived For the thrills
OMG!!! Sandra has moved to Melbourne and is living next to Michael! The fumes...
Don't laugh, I just have spoken with my husband, and it is an option.
It's a matter of immigration details. He's often spoken about Australia and wanting to go someplace warm and who knows what it is that is driving certain passions, but seriously, it's a possibility, although I might drive Michael to the brink if I moved next door.
Here:

This is exactly how I feel:
Don't dream it, be it!!!
Why the hell live if you can't do that anyways?!!!
Ah well, I've got this:
10000 01000 00100 00010 00001
I love the look of the above. Wish I had real experience with that inverse matrix mathematics. Well, actually I do, but it's behind so many goldarned screens and it's beyond the intellect anyways.
Maybe it's a completely different Steven8 - cue Twilight Zone type music.
EDIT: Nope it's the same steven8. He has a cool avatar. Handsome chap.
Same steven8, just a new packaging. I appreciate the thread, my friends. As is true to me, it strayed WAY off base.
I had a momentary brain freeze, and had Sir Don remove my account. Only to then have him, through his most graciousness, reinstate it. Especially after I found myself needing to come back on the site not two days later, and a short email conversation with Master bert! He is the soul of common sense!
Last I heard he was living in the Galapagos islands with a bevy of stolen Simply Scripts material, having grapes fed to him by scantly clad women while he closes movie deals on your alls scripts.

That's just what I heard, though...
I tried to, but the producers said all the scripts were balls and sucked goat nips, or some such, so I was forced to come back.

I understand exactly what you are saying here George.
One of the things that I don't like, (actually being a very devout believer in God), is that religion, although a stepping stone in evolution, and thus created by God, is nonetheless fraught with mechanical observances and in the end, if you go into many churches, you'll see the "deadness" of behavior and it sucks. (Stupid writer writes only "sucks").
The thing is. (always a thing) is that nature is before us and none of us can refute that. Are we alive? Seems so cause I've got a bloody headache or I'm starved as hell. Is there a God? Seems so 'cause if ya can bloody well say yuz a feelin' a godamned headache comin' on or a hangover or you're starved as hell, you might also contemplate the idea that as sure as you feel that shit, there might be a God.
And what the hell's it all about? Maybe so that we don't just exist as a bloomin' computer program that He wired and fixed according to pain and pleasure?
I don't know how to say this, but the best way I can think of is that God made all of these contradictions. And as much as anybody will tell you it sucks to feel pain, it comes from a good and benevolent hand, but that's a story you need to figure out for yourselves. I can't give you that, or it would be just like Mom and Dad saying, "This is the way, trust us 'cause we know because of experience." And the kid goes, "Ya right. Like they're a couple of stodgy old folks and what do they know anyways?!"
The whole response here, though you might be thinking "what the hell" again is in response to "The Church" in George's post: whatever church you want to name, lashing out at: whoever you want to name, and acting like they're righteous. That's one of the reasons why I don't like to pretend about anything or act like negative aspects don't exist. They do. They exist inside of me...
Do I want to cover them up? No. It's going to be 2010 and people are waking up to what's real. Negative aspects exist. Period. Inside and outside of churches around the globe. And thank God that J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books weren't banned.
It couldn't have happened anyways. As Shakespeare said,
All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players: They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages. At first the infant, Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms. And then the whining school-boy, with his satchel And shining morning face, creeping like snail Unwillingly to school. And then the lover, Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad Made to his mistress' eyebrow. Then a soldier, Full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard, Jealous in honour, sudden and quick in quarrel, Seeking the bubble reputation Even in the cannon's mouth. And then the justice, In fair round belly with good capon lined, With eyes severe and beard of formal cut, Full of wise saws and modern instances; And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts Into the lean and slipper'd pantaloon, With spectacles on nose and pouch on side, His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice, Turning again toward childish treble, pipes And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all, That ends this strange eventful history, Is second childishness and mere oblivion, Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.
So none of us should judge as we're all part of a great gathering.
God's created one as much as the other and we're so blessed and cursed as to have to figure it all out and come to some conclusion. Can we?
Anyways, I love the idea of this "Whatever Happened To..." thread. I will enjoy reading this especially because it always amazes me how things come and go and you wonder where and when.
