Simplyscripts is an amazing venue to work within and connect with others who also value the written word.

The interesting thing is that along the way, you connect with people that are seemingly at a distance and yet, surprisingly near. Ever have that? Where with a family member you might completely feel as east is from the west and yet with a stranger, you are close?

Many people experience this and it's a wonder why. Although there are some very close families, there are many that can't get a long for the life of them.

So anyways, sorry if I'm starting too many threads. Give me a nasty, but I'm wondering:

Why do you love Simply?

Sandra

I like it because it is a tight-knit sort of community, but at the same time there is honest and valuable criticism and information to take in from others.

I just think it's such a great resource. I wouldn't know half the things I know about writing today if not for this site.

I feel the same way, Julio. All of us together here, I think we are here together. And where is "here"? I'm apologizing now to the gentleman, (I can't remember) but in his "location" under his avatar it says, "At my computer." !!!!!

This is an amazing testament to the fact that our thoughts are influencing us as we speak-- even if we don't know it.

Thought has no velocity. It's something that we can't even comprehend.

Here at Simply, we have been invited and have thus joined a community that is completely engaged in THOUGHT.

The people here are dedicated to it. They live it and breath it and read

BROADWAY BETTY by Blakkwolfe to learn how Betty describes The Passion.

I love our crazy mix of people here on Simply. We truly are a community and it's strange-- though virtually based, we may be more real than what we experience at the grocery store.

If think back to why I joined originally, I just discovered the site as a means to show off the scripts I'd written on a site other than my own. I discovered the message board when I clicked the "Discuss this script" link next to the synopsis I'd sent in. I thought to myself "people will discuss it"?! Naturally, no one had discussed it, but I joined the board, pimped my stuff heavily, whined about no one reading it, and then became a productive member.

Over the years since then (holy crap, 5 years in November!), I've learned more from this site than I have from books I've read or even scripts I've written. It's been from the comments tossed back and forth about my own work and the what I've gotten out of reading, commenting, and discussing works of others. Writing is one thing, and it's important to do it in order to improve on it, but I've learned it's just as important to read what everyone else has done as well.

Bottom line is I would not be the writer I am without my time here. Even though I've been in and out now and again, I've never left completely, and I always read what's going on, even when I'm too busy to post much or participate in what goes on (*cough* like the recent OWC *cough*).

Furthermore, those people who have been around long enough to create a presence here are like an extended family. I've come to appreciate a lot of the people around here, and I admit that I have a lot of bias towards those who have been here awhile. It's the same kind of preference one would show to a long standing friend or family member. I'm sure I'm not alone in that.

I definitely think we're more real as a community than a lot of real communities out there. We probably know each other better than most of us know our actual neighbors. But then, a forum like this is easy to pipe up in, even for those of us who are introverted (which I'm sure is a fair number since writing is a very solitary task).

I think George pretty much covered it all...

I've been a member since April 2004. I haven't taken any screenwriting classes.
I learned from the Screenwriter's Bible, and my wonderful family at Simplyscripts.

I really don't want to get all mushy, but Simplyscripts is a wonderful place. A home away from home for writers, and the regulars ARE like extended family members, and like George says, I do know them better than my neighbors.

Yes, your Honor, I’m guilt. Your Honor, I'm convinced that I'm an addict in this Simply for long 4 years! So I’d like to face a maximum sentence of more four years or so being a SS member.

I like it because we can all relate to one thing: Script writing. everyone helps each other, and stuff. I've also got amazing help from a few on here so basically I've got SS to thank for that.

I just don't have any contacts or screenwriting classes, or writing groups here in Wisconsin so I am grateful to SS for providing support. My friends and family get tha confused look in their faces when they ask me what I've been doing lately and I say "Writing." What kind of writing would that be son? "Screenwriting sir." (a la Bill Murray in Stripes)

And for providing challenges to get me off my ass and complete something. I am still surprised by the number of creative people here who will help. The last OWC was impressive for the orignality of the contest and 38 entries.

But the thing I like best is the FEEDBACK. Giving or getting.

Is Bert a woman? That would explain a lot.

I'm mainly here for the script writing thingy too.

But the women always make the visit far more interesting.

See, THIS is why I love Simply: the sexual tension that bubbles just below the surface.

Oh, and the writing too. And the reading. And the encouragement you get from knowing that there are people out there who will not only read, but maybe perhaps even look forward to your new stuff, the incentive that provides. And the fact that there are great people here ready to answer your screenwriting questions when you need help. And the challenges and games. And the feeling of being part of a generous, mild-mannered community that are here to help each other get better.

All that, really. Oh, and Sandra, I love that I have to sometimes read your posts twice, maybe even three times to understand what you're saying.

And surprisingly to me, I found true friends here. Through hard times, as good times, the messages I had touched down to my heart.

But seriously (yes, i can be for at least a minute)  when i look at my early scripts, i can see the change in my writing. The formatting, the different techniques, all have improved from the help garnered on SS.

And i got to 'meet' Tommy and Jeff!!!

What's not to love about Simply? It's responsible for both my writing ability and my success in the industry. "Abattoir" has opened up all sorts of possibilities, none of which would have happened if I hadn't posted it here. Aside from what it's done for me personally, I think there's a lot of talented writers on the site as well. I enjoy both reading their scripts and hearing their ideas. Not to mention just about all the writers here are also downright awesome people. I think someone's already mentioned the "extended family" aspect of the place.

Long story short, Simply Scripts is awesome! Keep up the good work, Don

When my wife got pregnant with our first child I had to stop pursing my goal of breaking into the film industry and get a real job to help support my family. Then a couple of years later I was searching for online scripts and i discovered Simply Scripts and I was introduced to a community that could help me continue to pursue my interest in writing scripts from the comfort of home and as it's online I can just jump on whenever I have spare time. This is really conveniant. Since being here I've learnt how to format scripts properly and I've written 5 short scripts. One of which has been made into a short film by a film student who found the script here.

I've also met a lot of nice people from all over the world and sometimes I like to come here to talk about stuff that isn't related to script writing because I enjoy talking to likeminded people.

I defintely LOVE SS!  I think it's great in every single aspect.  The information, the help, the actual scripts...everything. Nothing like it anywhere that I'm familiar with.

The fact that we haev people from all over the world is downright amazing.  So many cool people who go out of their way to help, spend their free time reading adn reviewing other's scripts is just priceless.

I often think to myself, what would I do if SS was no more?  I'd be more than just bummed...I'd be heartbroken.

Don, you are the man who makes this all possible, but the "extended family" that contributes on a daily basis is what makes this work so well.

You guys (and gals) are all awesome!  Thanks so much for everything!

Jeff, my darling,

You know your post was #40?

Number #40 is the number of Mem.

And I don't understand any of this either.

All I can say is that

I love Simply because I love all of you.

I really do.

I don't know why or how or anything. I only know that we're souls that have been around for a long long time.

I think of Simply Scripts

And I think of"

The S.S. Minow (from Giligan's Island(

The Space Station (that now revolves)

The

SS in the context of the Holocaust and World War 2 stands for Schutzstaffel which, translated literally, means Protective Squad.

(Orginally, it provided bodyguards for leading Nazis).

As the literal translation conveys just about nothing to people who don't already know what it was, it is common to refer to it in English simply as the SS.

(Please accept my ignorance of history, but I'm supplying this here for your study).

It was the SS that was in charge of the Holocaust. (That's not as thought as  bad).

The Nazis regarded the SS as an elite unit, the Party's "praetorian guard", with all SS personnel selected (in principle, anyway) on the principles of racial purity and unconditional loyalty to Führer and the Nazi Party.

The SS military branch, the Waffen-SS, evolved into a second German army in addition to the regular German army, the Wehrmacht.

(Note that SS in this context should never be confused with s.s. in front of the name of a ship, where it stands for Steamship).

Last night, I generated these links because my husband had pointed to:

The Space Statio--

We were in bed and IT--

Held a Purpose

Your dialogue is appreciated. (I'm stupid with history. David, my husband, is very keen).

Sandra

I must say that I have been very impressed with the quality of writing to be found here. It is always nice to have positive comments on your work - and when they come from people whose scripts you have read and you know are themselves good writers, it adds value.

Previous to SS I was on another writers site that lacked both the community feeling that this one has, and the quality of scripts - and suffered from an annoying tendency from some of it's members to pontificate from upon high on other people's ability, despite not showing much themselves.

My only real regret is that I did not find this site much earlier - I have been visiting SS to look at the produced screenplays for many years and never realised this Forum existed.

Why do I love, Simply? In 1995, my wife was in grad school in Las Vegas. I didn't know too many people, was bored and I had a computer. A friend of mine called me and wanted to write a movie. Cool, I thought. We got together, had a few beers and came up with a campy, CGI spectacular science fiction adventure called "Saucer Strike." I went to the bookstore, picked up Lew Hunter's Screenwriter's 434 and went to town.

Soon enough, I had my 100 page masterpiece ready for the world. I pestered everyone I knew to read it, and, somewhat surprisingly, they liked it. I got the WGA agents list, and sent out some inquiries and heard back from a few, even one whom I sent the first ten pages...(they liked it, but it asked me to check in again in six months. I didn't.)

My wife decided that I had some talent in this (she still likes Saucer Strike) and bought me Final Draft for Christmas in '06, which (along with Syd Field's Screenplay) sat on my bookshelf until August. I stumbled on Simply Scripts and found out about this One Week Challenge contest that was free. Cool. Free is good.

I decided to try to write something for it and was completely floored by the feedback I received. Some good, some bad, but all positive in pointing me in the right direction, not only in working on my own stuff, but reading and absorbing the comments of other writer's and works as well.

So why do I love Simply?

Robert McKee's Story...$35.00
($43.95 if you live, according to Colbert, the corpse-ridden hellscape that is Canada)

Final Draft 8...$124.95
(Take a course at your local community college. Get an ID. Learn stuff and get software discounts)

A free (amazingly) and supportive group of writers that willingly give up their time, expertise and feedback to a struggling wanna be like myself, despite the fact that I'm a Massachusetts Liberal Democrat who desperately needs a haircut, but refuses to get one because I think that by somehow overcompensating in length in someway detracts from the obvious "deficiencies" on top? That, ya'll,s indeed priceless.

Go Wallabies.
