So, I started a podcast. Mainly because I'm bored. If anything, episode #1 made me realize how much pandemic weight I gained, so I'm now super motivated to drop the weight (I have an uncanny ability to lose a lot of weight quickly).

It's not super focused on screenwriting, but I've read a shit ton of specs over the past year and I do mention a "Unproduced Spec of the Week" for each episode (I do shout out Simply Scripts). I also showcase trailers for films or comedy specials that guests are promoting.

My guest for the first episode is actor Clay von Carlowitz -- he's a close friend, so I wanted the first episode to be with someone I'm comfortable riffing with. He's been in Lloyd Kaufman's "Return to Nuke 'Em High Vols. 1 & 2" and a bunch of other films (also set to star in my horror film "They Never Left"). He does have very interesting takes on acting during the pandemic, finding work, etc. We also delve into how he got his start and how he met his wife on the set of a Troma film (Return to Nuke Em High) and touch briefly on his relationship with Lloyd Kaufman.

Also coming up, I have Prison Break actor Steve Mouzakis, the writer-director duo behind my favorite horror film of 2021 so far -- and the ballsiest movie made in a long time, maybe since Natural Born Killers -- "Cactus Jack", a few stand-up comics I met while working at NYC comedy clubs, more actors, musicians, etc. I will have screenwriters on periodically, but I hate talking about screenwriting vocally in conversations, I feel like it's boring lol. Though screenwriting does come up. Mainly, the podcast is an outlet for me to whine about how broke and unsuccessful I am and sorta make fun of myself.

Episode 1 will be up at 3 pm Sunday (technically today).

Great stuff, Michael! Good for you.

I clicked on Play and it says twelve hours.
Looks like I'll have to tune in tomorrow.

Also, because I want to know what the ballsiest horror movie is...
Found it. Cactus Jack, I mean. Watched the trailer. Ballsy indeed.

Very cool!

Also cool you and Jason seem to have clicked. He's helped me a ton with Desert Tears. Btw, did you know Cactus Jack was shot with an iPhone? On an ultra low budget in a basement? I was seriously impressed. I think it would've made a bigger splash if they had finished it before the election.

Anyway, good luck with this.

Yeah, both brothers are really cool, I did their Hard Out podcast, we did like 3 hours (the 2 bonus hours can be seen through their Patreon).

The basement is actually Jason's, he shoots the podcast from there. Didn't know they used an Iphone though, that's nuts.

Thanks, man! Actually surprised it got as many views as it has (almost 200). I was shooting for like 50 views lol. Shout-out to Don for posting it on the front page.

I'll have a new episode up on Monday, I'll be interviewing Prison Break actor Steve Mouzakis (Van Gough from the most recent season).

Well done, mate. I subscribed to the channel.

Love seeing the two OWC Mugs in the background!

Will definitely look out for subsequent episodes.  Nice work!

Gave it a listen, Michael - good stuff. I found it interesting.

A couple of thoughts:

Lighting on your end needs to be better.

Wonder if there is a potential cross-partnership here with Script Revolution (SR). You already do shooting the shorts reviews (I am assuming for free) for that site. Maybe explore a deal with CJ where you will them verbally on your podcast in exchange with a link or a partner tag on the front page. Just spitballing.

I think in the long term, you could benefit from a few more structured segments. e.g., Movie review of the week/month, assessment of screenwriting sites, - the topic doesn't matter, but I think in setting viewer expectations and enhancing search results - it would drive more traffic.

NOTE - take the above with a grain of salt as I have zero expertise in podcasts. Although I religiously listen to 3 (Al Franken, Sarah Silverman and Bill Burr).

Dude - how is it you haven't written a horror centered around a NY bartender!?  - half of your work would already be done background-wise.

Good stuff - will keep listening

Yeah, I tried referencing the low-budget, poor picture quality, poor lighting and sound in the first episode. Really wanted to play off the low-budget "discount" thing, kinda use it as a theme. When I actually have money, I'll definitely upgrade. Unfortunately, I can barely afford to pay rent and eat... sometimes, I can't even afford to do that.

I do plan on structuring a little more, but as someone who loves podcasts like Joe Rogan, Whiskey Ginger, Bad Friends, I wanted to start out with a free-flowing format (or lack of format). I also plan on structuring the discussions I have with guest, like focusing on particular topics (top 10 favorite movies, top 10 favorite movie scripts, etc).

One thing I HATE is talking about screenwriting to a camera -- I address this in the first episode. I'm not a guru or expert or some know-it-all like a lot of screenwriters with podcasts claim to be... and writing itself takes up so much of my time, I'm kinda sick of it lol. I really don't want to focus on writing itself outside of giving a shout-out to a spec script I liked. Of course, if I have a writer/director on (like this episode), screenwriting will be talked about. But on my own, I really think screenwriting is boring, can't sit through screenwriting podcasts without falling asleep. There's a pretentiousness in a lot of screenwriting podcasts and interviews and it feels really stuffy and stiff to me. There are some good ones that provide a lot of insight, but I don't really want this one to be one of them lol.

As for a horror about a bartender, I'm sure I'll get to it eventually lol.

I watched/listened to both episodes. Although not fully. What made me happy is that the audio was really crisp. Good job on that.

Episode 3 is now up! With the star of my favorite horror film of 2021 so far, R. Michael Gull (possibly the most despicable horror movie villain I've ever seen on screen). I was a little late this week due to some writing assignments that took a lot out of me. But I'll be releasing a few more episodes in the coming week, playing catch-up.

Dropped 2 episodes this week. In EP 4, I interview the star of Lloyd Kaufman's "Return to Nuke Em High Vols 1 & 2" & Sociopatha, Asta Paredes. We talk about women in film, our love for the horror genre & subculture, and other things film. I also recommend checking out EP 3 with the star of controversial horror flick "Cactus Jack", R. Michael Gull.
