Platnium Dunes strikes again! Yes, everybody's favourite guy Michael Bay has taken possesion of another beloved series of slasher flicks.

The remake will retell the story of how Jason Voorhees first doned his famous hockey mask in order to terrorise horny, drug-addled teens. Bay will produce and Marcus Nispel (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Pathfinder) has been signed to direct, from a script by Freddy vs. Jason scribes Damian Shannon and Mark J. Swift.

The Hollywood Reporter also recently broke the news that Jared Padalecki (Supernatural, House of Wax) is in final talks to take the lead role. The flick is set to be released on 13th of February, 2009. A Friday of course.

My own two cents: With the abyssmal effort of Jason X, the F13 franchise is pretty much dead and buried next to Jason's countless victims. Perhaps a retelling of Jason's origins could kick things back into gear. Nispel has an interesting style and I was surprised at how enjoyable FvJ was, so I have faith in the director and both writers. Bay's not my favourite guy in the world, but as long as he stays in his producer's chair and doesn't interfere too much with the important people, I think it'll be okay.

Any thoughts?

I don't care about Friday. Hell, maybe it needs a remake. Either way, I don't care. What I care about is my beloved Nightmare on Elm St., scheduled to be remade in 2010. No Robert Englund and no Wes Craven--doomed from the start.

Friday the 13th is one of my favorite films, definetly my favorite horror film, and I'm honestly not mad that they are remaking it. I've been following the development of this film and I'm with Matt. This is one remake that really has potential. People always wrongly accuse Friday the 13th as being nothing more than cliched teens meeting a machete. Well, that's true for the sequels. But the first film actuially had a story. It actually developed it's characters and there was even some suspese. So yes, I'm looking foward to this remake.

Here's to hoping it doesn't turn out like Halloween!

Oh good.  And I thought that Hollywood had run out of old movie franchises to remake.  Maybe they can call this one:  Friday the 13th:  Beating a Dead Horse.

I'd be willing to bet this becomes the stereotype slasher everyone thinks the original already is. Like Zack said, the original actually had some substance. Even the deaths were more Hitchcock than Hostel. These remakes, on the other hand, seem to be upping the gore factor in the classics they rehash. This one, I think, will more than live up to the expectations of the people who've never seen the original while, ironically, doing away with its actual essence at the same time. Nispel (if he's indeed the director, his named been attached to several, now seemingly defunct, projects) is a little more talented and standout than your typical director-for-hire but I'm pretty sure this one will still end up looking pretty standard.

I still remember hearing that Jason X advertisement on the radio and laughing at the sheer concept of it. What's next: Jason XX: Alone (When you thought it was all done, we come back with a new spin. Jason comes back but finds that everyone is dead. Who does jason go after next? Himself. Will he succeed? Come and watch. Rated R for retarded) lol

I'm still probably end up watching this remake but I'm defiatenly not going to the theatres to watch it. I'll wait for the dvd.

Friday the 13th WILL be rated-R! If it got the dreaded PG-13 rating, I wouldn't see it.

What a scary thought, a PG-13 F13... I hadn't even thought about it until now. Very, very glad they're going for the hard R.

Hype-Master Zack strikes again haha.

If run-of-the-mill, blurry-ass bootleg footage with people talking in the audience is your bag, then awesome it is.

My link is working again. I love the last shot of the trailer(Jason running at the girl with his ax raised to strike). It seems like they're trying to make Jason more realistic.

Actually, Jason originally did run in parts 2-4. It wasn't until part 6 that he became zombie  Jason.

I remember when I was excited that they were remaking Halloween... but look how that turned out.
This better not be the same situation. Because I'm psyched for this, but I don't want them to make it horrid like they did with Halloween.

I'm not sure about this. I mean the original movie is the only one that goes at my mind, all those sequels were stupid and with no reason. Then came Freddy vs. Jason!

I haven't seen a good remake of the old classic horrors, if you consider Texas Chainsaw Massacre; Halloween; and now this. The only good remake is that of The Hills Have Eyes which i liked.

I don't know about this! Let's see!

Wow... Jason running. How cool.
I mean, I know he ran in the first few, but in this one, he just looks like he's running because he can.
When does Jason run after a victim when they're lying on the ground? I can understnd running to catch up, but, wow.
This may be alright. I did like the TCM remake, same director, so this may be good.

It's the Happy Gilmore approach, but with an ax/machete (can't tell) instead of a golf club.

I'm not much of a horror fan but I did see the very first Friday The 13th way back in the day. I think they should leave well enough alone and move on to new projects. Some characters should remain idle in the Hall Of Fame.

Mike, the link you posted is dead.

I think films should be left alone but at the same time Marcus Nispel will help put an exclamation point on this dreadful franchise once and for all.

He did such a great job with (not so) Frankenstein and Pathfinder...

On IMDB and other sites you can see a picture from the film with a girl in the water and Jason watching her from shore.

Jason will be exactly the same. The only real difference is that CG has come a long way and they can make it that such sweeter in how he kills the kids and that's all people want these days... mindless death scenes with beautiful CG and lighting.

I for one think this really has a chance. Not because I'm a Jason fan boy(although I am), but because of those involved.  Nispel has a very solid eye for directing. TCM may not have been amazing, but it was a hell of a lot better than Halloween. "Micheal Myers", you want the reason why Halloween sucked so bad? Rob Zombie.

I've read a few plot spoilers for this. Besides a few questionable new takes on the series(Jason kidnaps a girl who resembles his mother, and he uses underground tunnels to move around Camp Crystal Lake), I like the overall direction this reboot is taking.

Also note that this is NOT a remake. It's more of a re-sequel. The original still happend. Just pretend none of the sequels happened.

They're all being yanked pretty fast, especially on YouTube.  The only thing I can recommend is checking the comments section on some sites.  People have been posting fresh links in those as they find them.

I'm not really a fan of the recent "remake explosion" that's occurred in the 2000s, but if there is any movie that needed a remake, it's this one. The first Friday was not a good movie at all and I'm amazed that it generated so many sequels and so much money. People criticize the SAW sequels, but they're oscar-worthy compared to these, even Saw IV..

The Friday movies can only go up. After Jason X and Jason takes Manhatten, they can't possibly get any worse.

Quoted Text

Now this I am concerned about. I just pray that they don't get some former CW or Disney star to play in this. I can only imagine the writers trying to "sex up" Nancy. Look at what happened with 07's Laurie. [I do love Zombie's version of Halloween too though as a whole, but he really did butcher Laurie's character].

Come on, it's not like the plot of this movie was ever going to be a big mystery.

Cabin in the woods - check
Horny people - check
Hockey mask - check
Machete - check

Will there be blood? Hmmm, I reckon there will.

I'm thinking it'll be one of those endings where one of them gets away - or so it would appear, cos' then out of nowhere Jason chops him / her (I'm betting it'll be one of the chicks) the fuck up.

*SPOILERS*

The black guy makes it longer than you'd expect, and he survives his first encounter with Jason. Jason is defeated in the end, but not exactly killed. There are two survivors.

i have high hopes for this one, the trailers just keep getting better and better! i really don't think their giving too much away at all, some of them obviously aren't even deaths so it's really throwing people for a loop! it's a nice throwback to the original trailer too! can't wait to see this!

Sinister is beside the point. Anyone with a good still camera could set that shot up.

I dunno. The Friday movies, wile they attempted some measure of creativity as they went along, maintained a total lack of interest for me. I have seen all ten of them for the sake of watching them all, but really, they had the same basic plot or plotline within it.

Ahem...

Random teens find themselves out at Crystal Lake for some reason. They're mostly horny and/or stupid in most of their actions, few of which have any plot significance and only exist to set up the next kill. There's no character building throughout and one of them manages to survive long enough to be killed in the (next) sequel.

Did I get it all?

Actually... Adrien King is the only actress to return for a sequel and get killed. Also, the original film did attempt to develop its characters. Besides that, yeah. You're right. Doesn't change my opinion on the series though. I still love 'em.

They're mostly horny and/or stupid in most of their actions, few of which have any plot significance and only exist to set up the next kill. There's no character building throughout and one of them manages to survive long enough to be killed in the (next) sequel.

Did I get it all?

You got the majority of the horror section at Blockbuster.

I would probably change that to "slasher section" cos' the really good horror movies have none of that.

In that case, it would be all the movies in the slasher section.

Unfortunately, you don't find too many of the classic horror films at the local Blockbuster.  I couldn't find the original House of Wax, but I can find the remake with Paris Hilton.  And I can find every straight-to-video horror film made this year on the shelf.

The classics--the true classic horror films are disappearing, unfortunately.

That I noticed for sure. I took the list that someone compiled of some of the best horror movies this year (you know it changes by opinion, but I watch 'em all anyway), but when I went to blockbuster, I couldn't find anything on that list (that I hadn't seen). We're not talking ancient films either. I looked for Hellraiser, The Fly (1986), Carnival of Souls, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers (197, and came up completely dry. Had to get them online.

Blockbuster is rapidly turning into Walmart in their selection. The only older movies they have anymore are the ones that people don't lose at home somewhere when they check them out. And now with their movie purchase program (i.e. you keep the movie you checked out and just pay the purchase price for it), they'll start running even lower on the old ones. I got one the other day that the receipt told me it would cost me all of $2 to keep it. I didn't keep it because it was feardotcom (let's be serious here), but as the older ones get older, they'll start disappearing, especially when they go out of print and Blockbuster charges you $2 to keep it.

That reminds me, I should see if they have Pinnochio...

I actually have two video rental accounts (Netflix and Hollywood Video) for just that reason.  Hollywood is nice in that I can jump in the car and pick up movies right away, but their selection is nowhere near what Netflix has, so I end up using it primarily for new releases while using Netflix via mail and watch instantly (I have a Roku player) for things that fall off the beaten path.

Another reason behind the disappearance of older films, at least in my opinion, is the massive influx of horror that's gone on over the past so many years.  As newer movies come in, they start to cycle out older stuff, which unfortunately is usually of much better quality.

Or being remade, also unfortunately.

They don't make 'em like they used to do - back then they relied much more on atmosphere as opposed to blood. Take a look at Alien...and then look at AVP:R! Jesus Christ!

I have Blockbuster, and it's a grandfathered online plan that allows for unlimited in store exchanges. Basically, I request whatever movie I want online, and then when I've watched it, I go into the store and swap it for whatever they have in at the time (usually a new release).

In addition to Blockbuster, I also get movies from the library. They have a selection of about 6,000 movies and while there's no horror, they have most of the best films ever made along with a majority of the new releases (for instance, I have The Dark Knight reserved at my local library, and I'll get it either today or tomorrow).

I also have Netflix just to really overkill my movie tastebuds and because their online movie watching is unlimited. I'm kinda serious about my movie watching. I don't really buy any movies.
