Sorry if this isn't the right place. I actually haven't seen a lot of the films nominated, so can't really have an opinion on it. Sad to see some things left out though, such as Prisoners but this year seemed pretty powerhouse so it probably got pushed out easily.

Sad to not see any Walking Dead or Boardwalk Empire nods.

Don's edit - screenplays of some of the nominated films can be found at http://www.simplyscripts.com/oscar86.html

A bad writer, trying to become decent...

Thank you for all who put up with my work and try and help me improve.

Practice will hopefully pay off for my writing.

They're classifying The Wolf of Wall Street in the comedy section? Interesting. Weird that Alexander Payne is getting the nomination for best screenplay for Nebraska, considering that he didn't do anything about from director's rewrites. I'm guessing that must be an error on the announcement's behalf.

I'll be happy as long as Breaking Bad wins at least one.

What he said (although I'll be upset if it doesn't win two). Too bad Aaron Paul isn't nominated as well.

Breaking Bad - all the way!  Anything on there for Orange is the New Black, or Shameless?

Cheers,

I'd say I've seen about a third of the films nominated and read the scripts for August: Osage County and Enough Said. 12 Years A Slave smokes just about all of them and will probably take at least a good chunk of the awards. I'm really pulling for Steve McQueen to take Best Director when the Oscars come around.

Also, what's the deal with Captain Phillips? Is it *really* that good? I mean, I guess it's just the Golden Globes but I really don't understand the hype. Same goes for Rush. I guess I'll have to check them out before the year's over.

I see a lot of hype around Prisoners too (around here, anyway). Still haven't even seen the trailer. Perhaps I'll take a look at the script.

Surprised - but very pleased - to see Philomena nominated. Tightly put together, lovely little film. Dench, predictably, is fantastic, but a performance of true restraint from Steve 'Partridge' Coogan was also pleasing. I think Before Midnight is very unfortunate to not get a nod in drama.

Still to see some of the big hitters, but the unjustifably harsh response to my personal fave (thus far) of the year, The Counselor, sees it get a swerve. Big shame. I reckon it'll get recoginition over time. Marketing killed it by totally subverting expectation to the reality.

Indeed. But there's plenty out there who love it. I think the series as a whole has a pretty solid cult following.

For my part, I watched all three films for the first time in a relatively short timespan. There are so many elements in them that should've been deal breakers for me but I was won over every single time. I almost enjoy them even more because of it.

Top 10 film for me. I haven't seen the other films in the Best Actress category except for Frances Ha so I can't really judge who should win but Delpy's performance blew me away.

Agreed. I found Delpy's character deeply irritating in this last film, and that's a testament to how well she played the role. Hawke was also very good. He's had a largely good couple of years - I like how he's taking risks and most are paying off.

I always found both of the characters - Delphy's and Hawke's irritating and yet the films compulsively watchable. I haven't seen the latest, but I intend to.

I found myself taking Hawke's side in this film... funny that being a man! You'll enjoy it - it's a good end.
