Terrifier finally landed on Australian Netflix. I decided to check it out after reading a lot of good things about it in a few horror Facebook pages I follow. People genuinely love this film.

The premise is a clown brutally kills people in a random building because... um... who the f@#k knows. This is up there with the worse horrors ever made, in my opinion. It has a non-existent plot, absolutely terrible acting, and it's just gore and torture porn for the sake of gore and torture porn.

This film has no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

Itís not even one of those so-bad-its-good films, itís just so bad.

It looked like one, from the trailer.

I watched it over the weekend, and I enjoyed it more than I expected. It's by no means a good movie, but I liked everything about the Terrifier himself. While we never come to know what his motivations are, he still has a lot of character and his silent antics and total lack of compassion are compelling to watch. Actually, his whole motivation seems to be to have fun killing and I was on board for it. The kills are fun, and more than once I couldn't wait to see what he would do next.

I did see where the movie was headed soon after the midpoint, and overall I thought it didn't really work, but I still appreciated the attempt. (I won't go into details, no spoilers here.) What most impressed me was how much Damien Leone got away with on such a small budget. His kickstarter was only asking for $15000! The movie obviously hinges on the Terrifier's performance, and that's where the movie shines. The rest of the cast are cringe-worthy except for the blond friend and she's terribly written, but if you're watching this for good acting you're barking up the wrong tree.

It's well worth checking out if you like cult horror.

Streaming on Netflix, here in the states.  Just watched it this morning.

And...

...I have to say I actually enjoyed it...for what it is and is meant to be.

Acting is terrible, but I think it's supposed to be.  Same with the plot or lack of plot.  It's obviously an homage to terrible 80's horror films, and some of those terrible 80's horror films are faves of mine, because they're so terrible, they actually work as comedy gold...but back then, I don't think they were actually meant to be funny...they were just terrible films.

From the very first scene, you know what you're in for, and if you hated that first scene, you should have turned it off right then.

The gore isn't all that well done and is mostly of the so gross, it's almost comical, but on such a small budget, I think they did a pretty good job.

SPOILERS     SPOILERS     SPOILERS     SPOILERS     SPOILERS     SPOILERS

What I think they totally got right, is the way the Protags were handled.  You never knew who would survive and who would provide help.  It's a take no prisoners mentality, and I always appreciate that.

The scene in the "morgue" at the end, was comical, at best.  Trying to pass off that room as a morgue takes balls, and I actually laughed several times, it was so pathetic.

All in all, much better than most horror flicks these days, and a nice throwback to the glorious 80's.

I liked it too. Not sure why, but it worked for me. I also liked All Hallows Eve. Same thing, kind of.

So, we've got quite contrasting views here...

Which means I'm gonna have to watch it now.

Btw Warren, I watched Raw the other week, cause of your mention. Real body-horror stuff.

Keep the recommendations coming.

Finally get to watch Cargo tonight!

I know Iím in the minority when it comes to my views on this film. Itís getting a lot of love on social media, but I honestly donít get it.

I think itís funny to say:

SPOILERS     SPOILERS     SPOILERS     SPOILERS     SPOILERS     SPOILERS

I literally laughed when I saw this. What could you possibly spoil? There is no plot; there are no characters to care about. I couldnít care less who got killed and when, all the characters were props for slaughtering.

So yes if you are entertained by people getting hacked to death in terrible ways for no reason, this will entertain. I like my horrors with at least some depth and this doesnít have any, at all.

I just donít get it.

But each to their own.

Did anyone watch All Hallows Eve? Whoever this Damien Leone is, he has a way of making you watch to the end even though it's not stellar filmmaking.

Can't find AHE on my local Netflix, but thanks for the hot tip, Pia. I'll look out for it.

Pumpkinhead is 1 of my al time favorite flicks!  Saw it at the theater when it was originally released.

Lance Henriksen is 1 of the all time great character actors and IMO, he gives a killer performance here.

The FX were great and Pumpkinhead's design was classic, as was the witch.

This is a much deeper film than it probably gets credit for, and there are themes running through it that work on many levels for me.

My SPOILERS related to the fact that the Protag that appeared to be the main character, or "final girl" was done away fairly early in the film, opening up her sister's role, as both final girl and crazy freekowhacko from the opening scene.

It was handled very differently than run of the mill slasherfest.

I totally got that. I guess the point I was making is that to me that information doesnít feel like a spoiler because... who cares?

If I felt anything for any of these characters maybe I would care who lives and who dies, and in what order.

But I donít, I couldnít possibly care less.

I get that a lot of the horror loving community are okay with just gore for gore sake, but I donít find that entertaining.

I think at the end of the day you and I just have different ideas of what makes good horror. I remember you saying you were disappointed in It Comes at Night, where I thought that was a masterclass in great horror.

I guess you're right, as I completely forgot about It Comes At Night, because I was bored off my arse and there was nothing going on to entertain me...or maybe it was just that there was no payoff at the end, which left me frustrated.

To each his own, I guess.
