I mentioned this in my best of 2019 list. Been thinking about it a lot since the glowing reception of Promising Young Woman, which I thought was a piece of s*** that totally betrayed its protagonist (and Carey Mulligan's fantastic work creating her).
Anyway, A Vigilante is the real deal. A totally sincere, down-and-dirty rape-revenge flick that delivers all the satisfaction of the genre in a fresh approach that feels in step with the times. It's got raw anger at its centre and a realistic tough-as-nails protagonist. I thought it was a totally solid genre picture and would highly recommend it both on its own terms, and as a movie that succeeds in all the ways that Promising Young Woman was a failure.
Thanks for the recommendation - I watched this last night based off of your post and I wasn't disappointed. It certainly didn't hold back it's punches.
Watched it last night, thanks for the rec. That was so real and grounded I kind of forgot it was a revenge movie. My opinion of Olivia Wilde has gone way up.

Maybe I should make this its own separate movie thread, but I'm curious what you didn't like about Promising Young Woman. I thought it had some great dialogue, an interesting/unique lead, the romance element was extremely entertaining up to a certain point...
I did very much hate one thing near the end that left a bad taste. Is it just something about the ending that turned you off or other stuff too?
By the way, I'm gonna try to finally finish notes on Unarmed tonight. You got mad talent.

That's exciting about the notes, thank you so much!
Yes I suspect it was the same thing you're talking about. I hated the way things played out, and all the more because I liked so much about the movie (I agree with you on all the positives you listed). I guess I'm harsher on movies that I like parts of than movies that I don't like at all...
Yeah, the way things played out was a big disappointment. It's hard to say much else without spoiling the movie. When I read the script I forced myself to stop midway through cuz I wanted to wait for the movie assuming it was going to be amazing. And it was, until it wasn't...
I'm slowly going through all these revenge films that have come out in recent years. Next up will be Peppermint. The reviews make it sound atrocious so I'm scared.
Added to the watchlist. Writing a revenge thriller (I generally don’t write outside drama/comedy) so looking for tips.
Heretic, if you’re looking revenge stuff that stray outside the “defiled woman seeks bloody revenge” but still covers a similar plot, I recommend Jennifer Kent’s babydook follow up “the nightingale”. Really interrogates the value of revenge and the impact on all involved.
Ben, thank you for reminding me! I was excited about this one but had completely forgotten about it by the time it got a (very lacklustre) Canadian release.
Warren, that's great to hear. I hope this one continues reaching more people.
