Could someone explain to me how to plot the action of your story? I have final draft 7 so does that mean to only write the ACTION of your story without dialogue? I'm sorry, Im referring to the Screenwriting palette and CHeckpoint 15 has me quite confused. Thanks.  

Write it as you see it in your head. If there's dialogue, include it. You can always revise it later.

Plot the action of your story. Identify your central character�s action plot and emotional subplot. Look at your other movie people; identify their goals. Their goals will drive their individual plots (actually subplots). Do these various plots lines intersect, resulting in adequate conflict for drama or comedy?

My interpretation is that plotting out the action of the story, is plotting out all the actions of your character.  Confused yet?

Basically, it's like the old saying, and I'm paraphrasing..."Create a hero" and "Put your hero in a tree"  and "Get him out of the tree".

Plotting the action would be figuring out how to get your character out of the tree since that is his goal.  Does he try to swing from branch to branch, making his way down with each one?  Does he use his belt as a make shift rope and try to climb down only to realize it's far too short?  Does he use his cell phone and call the fire department?

Maybe he does all three, but those are his actions in trying to figure out how to get out of the tree.

Dude, this has nothing to do with whatever writing software you might be using.

Does your main character have a goal?  What are his obstacles, and are these obstacles formidable enough to be compelling?  If not, change them.

How does your character change over the course of the story?  For better or worse?  Either is equally valid.

What is the story you are telling?

This is the pencil and paper stuff -- things you should have worked out long before you start typing away at your script.
