I've written a short script and the protagonists’' name is never mentioned in the story. So he's described as the man. But reading the man through out the script doesn't sit well with me.

For the sake of a better read, is it okay to give a character a name, even if their name isn't mentioned in the story?

Of course.

I would argue that naming characters is the accepted practice anyway.

Is there a particular reason why you haven't named him? If not, then should give him a name.

As I said his name is never mentioned in the course of the story, because it's not required. But, for the sake of making it better to read, I thought I might give him a name, because Steve (or whatever) reads better than continually referring to him as "the man". It would be okay if he was a pimp, but he isn't. Lol.

Giving him a name will give us a better feeling of attachment for him.

Has anyone read the Fight Club script? I wonder how they managed to go through the movie without giving the protagonist a consistent name. Sometimes he calls himself Cornelius and sometimes... god knows what.

You never get his real name.

dogglebe is right, however, even if the character's name isn't mentioned, giving the character a name gives the reader the idea that the writer knows who the character is.  Unless you're trying to do an "everyman" piece.

Why isn't it required?

Where did you see that?  The script on here only refers to him as Jack.

Because there's no dialogue in the script. It's just a short visual deal.
