Just finished reading Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring" being released this summer. I was aware of the true story the film is based off of and thought I'd give this a look. First of all, Sofia Coppola's scripts are hard to review, they tend to be pretty vague leaving room for her to get all artsy with her long takes. However, this has more reading material than her last screenplay "Somewhere". I liked the script, mostly because I like Sofia Coppola's style and I can see how she will transform a majority of the scenes with some great visuals and a killer soundtrack. The film retells the true story of a group of teenagers who use social media to find when their favoured celebrities will be out of town to then rob their homes. The story is interesting as a social commentary about youth and the escalating obsession with fame. The script is heavy on showcasing all of the materialistic wonders that has these teenagers foaming at the mouth, which is yeah a big part of the film but the script becomes a bit tiring throughout. One thing that really didn't read well with me was the dialogue. It's hard to criticize because I don't know the real people involved (who apparently Sofia Coppola was in contact with), but the L.A. teen dialogue is pretty painful. I found the script interesting as a sort of inside look at what really happened during the crimes, however I felt this could have been so much more. I think if Sofia Coppola made the creative decision to fictionalize the story, there could have been a lot more interesting character arcs. Something about the characters and dialogue seems flat, but that could be the point. Either way, it's interesting and it's hard to critique as Sofia Coppola has her own way of doing things, but I'm still excited to see the movie.
