What is good and free?
I used to use Celtx, but now you are only allowed 3 screenplays (even if you throw them in the trash) and then they want a monthly fee.

I've tried a couple different freebies and have settled on Trelby. It does everything I need and works off-line without any glitches. |

Thanks Don, probably need to update that article at some point WriterDuet has a free option that appears similar to CeltX as in you can save 3 scripts, but i'm not sure if that's one at a time or in total? It's a very good screenwriting option though so worth a look. Trelby as mentioned, though I'm not sure it's actively been developed anymore as last release was 2012 (I think), but it certainly does work! And then the newest one, is AmazonStorywriter, cloudbased screenwriting software from Amazon, a bit basic but does work and all you need is an Amazon account and you're off. There are other options for Mac that I'm less familiar with... Personally I'd spend a little and get FadeIn, it's very good and the developer is a writer too and has been interviewed on this very site. |

Just use any text editor, like word pad, using Fountain.
You can the use a free program like dub editor to convert it to standard screenplay.
It means your script is compatible with every platform, past, present and future and you can work anywhere and on anything plus you can write using Google speech etc

Many people like to use dedicated software, then it's written in screenplay format from the start... no need to convert to anything, so need for yet more software to convert it into something... and of course ultimately whatever you use, you'll then need to convert it into PDF to send it anywhere... So personally I like to see it in write format as I go and then press a button to get a PDF. But of course writing in a text editor and converting works for some people, like Scar, so if you wanted to investigate that option then details of Fountain can be found here https://fountain.io/ |

Been stuck with Celtx due to their Android support. Would like to migrate to FinalDraft soon. |

Open office.
You only need to be able to write well... your software will not be the issue. |

Thank you again. I think I will try Trelby and see how it works. Working on a western right now... |

When I first started writing, before my long procrastination period, Windows 95 was just coming out, and I struggled to write on a Canon printer, with a small screen that could only display two words. It's amazing how they managed in Holywood for nearly a century with typewriters. I got various aps on my IPad Mini - just use them for notes though, because not really good for writing a full script. I love the fact that if I have an idea in the middle of my night in bed, I can turn to my tablet and jot it down in detail before I forget. |

I keep my iPad by my bed for the same reason, stick all my ideas into Evernote... then when i'm out and about I can add more from my phone, or laptop... gotta love technology! |

I remember helping my mom transition from an electric typewriter to a "word processor" that would let you edit a single line of text before it printed out to the paper.
My first printing tech other an an all-caps toy typrewriter was a good ol' fashioned MPS-801 dot matrix printer. That thing was louder than our smoke alarm. |
