My fav is psychological horror.

I enjoy being vicariously scared more than revolted.

And suspense and edge of the seat stuff where it messes with your head more than just gore for the sake of it. Slasher horror and torture porn not my thing but the Wolf Creek series impressed me with combining both.

Jacob's Ladder, It Follows, Oculus, Sixth Sense, Don't Look Now, and some of Polanski's stuff, not least his version of Macbeth. And who can forget Lynch with Eraserhead.

I'm with you on The Exorcist, no exorcism movie comes close IMHO, and it combines true horror with psychological.

I think Brian De Palma's film Blowout is terrific too, not strictly horror, but it is really...

Cosmic horror such as H P Lovecraft.

The modern master of it is a guy called Mark Samuels.

The best stories for me have a spiritual dimension.  Stories that deal strictly with Materialism are too thin for me.  They feel a bit autistic.  I like stories where there's something hiding just behind the thin facade of what we call reality.

Good thread.  Nice to see horror getting its due, as IMO, the horror industry has been killed by all the completely BS PG13 rated crap we're spoon fed again and again.

I love all horror, really, but I'd say my least favorites are haunted houses/ghosts and exorcism crap (not even really a fan of The Exorcist).

Favorites would be anything done well, as Pia said.  Hostel and Hostel 2 are 2 of my favorite movies, but over the top, cheap torture porn doesn't do all that much for me.

I like psychos and sickos and backwood nutjobs, slicing and dicing their way to dinner just fine, but there are just too many poor examples out there, although the original Wrong Turn is a truly great flick, while the sequels are some of the worst shit around.

Slasher flicks can and have been great, but yet again, they have also been done to death and are usually downright terrible.

I like me some creature horror for sure, be it real life creatures, or monster/alien creatures.  I even like fairy tale-type horror, done for scares.

Bottom line is I like me my horror, but just wish we could get some real horror that hits hard and take no prisoners.

Couldn't these be considered slashers? And Wrong Turn 2 was a fine sequel. After Part 2, well, yeah they are all shit.

I'm sure some would consider those to be slashers, but if we're breaking down to sub genre, I think there's a difference when you go all TCM or the like.

Wrong Turn 2 was decent, but pretty goofy .  The sequels that followed were just garbage and Declan O'Brien is a complete arsehole!!!

What an insidiously cruel question. The correct answer is obviously none. Why choose one flavor of ice cream when you can have them all?

But for the purposes of pure, frivolous fun...

My all-time favorite films seem to fall under body horror, so that one's certainly up there. The Neapolitan ice cream of horror subgenres. You get the psychological and the gore, not to mention some of the most memorable, often grotesque images in the game. Sadly unexplored but loaded with potential.

I probably like more films in the splatter genre than any other. There's definitely some overlap between splatter and body horror too, e.g. The Fly, Hellraiser. Splatter flicks also make the best movie nights/double features with lots of booze. Fucking party!

I love cosmic/Lovecraftian horror, which is probably my *current* fav. Thus far, it's more of a literary subgenre with very few (if any) films doing it justice. I'd like to see that change, but in the mean time, I'm happy to experience it on the page. I love the atmosphere and harrowing sense of dread and have become practically obsessed with its themes of the unknown and disintegration of reality/sanity. Horror with a nihilistic edge -- the best!

Least favorite subgenre is found-footage. Really more of a format than a genre, but it's become fused with horror to a point where I think calling it a subgenre is fair game. Anyway, haven't seen a single found-footage horror film that was worth revisiting, let alone anything beyond "good"/adequate. Cannibal Holocaust is barely watchable/not entirely found footage, I keep forgetting Man Bites Dog exists, and The Blair Witch Project is hollow, dated bullshit whose legacy has next to no value (these are supposed to be the pioneers and standard bearers of the genre). I can't tell if the format inherently ruins otherwise quality films or if the folks who gravitate towards found footage horror just coincidentally have bad taste every single time. Either way... shit sucks.

Dishonorable mention... I used to think exorcist films were the worst subgenre since there're only one and a half good ones: The Exorcist and *maybe* Exorcist III. Blair Witch ain't no Exorcist. I guess it's better than Exorcist: The Beginning...

Again, though, I couldn't pick a single subgenre. For every great film I could pick from one, there'd be a great film to match it from another. I tend to gravitate to darker fare, but sometimes the right exploitation trash just hits the spot. They all got their gems.

I do want to add that whatever the sub genre is, I despise horror films that don't take themselves seriously.

That's not to say that a horror film can't have some humor, but it has to be played for reals and not a joke or pisser.

James, you don't like the original "Blair Witch Project"? I admit that the found footage sub-genre in general kind of sucks, but "The Blair Witch Project" is so good. One of my personal favorite horror films.

Jeff, do you mean horror-comedies? "Tucker and Dale vs Evil" was awesome, but I can't really think of any others I enjoyed.

If memory serves, Jeff, you didn't like Cabin in the Woods. While it's a horror-comedy, it is real for the characters in it, the same way Shaun of the Dead was. Kind of a fine line, I suppose...

Rob Zombie and his movies are eww. lol. Although I did enjoy the last two minutes of his newest flick, "31".

Not a big fan or horror to be honest. It's usually cliche and not scary. However I did enjoy Sinister (2012) with Ethan Hawk as it was more about the mental breakdown of a desperate man done well with some grinder style slasher scenes. It was really well down for what it was.

That said, I do have a great idea for a horror script kicking around in my head. I hated them so much I thought hwy not try and do my own?
