Greetings again, everyone. Does anyone have any writing goals for 2010? My goal is to sell a screenplay. I have been working on this particular story since I was a child. I completed the screenplay in 2005 but never pushed it. I'm going to rework a few minor details, tighten up a few loose ends and sell it, yes SELL it in 2010! That is my goal! I believe that this particular story is my Star Wars or Harry Potter. I really do.

Personally, my goal is to write my first feature script.

For a number of years my core writing resolutions (or goals) for the year ahead have been the same:

Get writing. Keep writing.
Get an agent.
Sell one of my screenplays.
Become a professional screenwriter.
Pack in my job.

This year, much to my amazement, I actually achieved the first one

So, 2010's list will be much the same, but with this now as the primary resolution:

Keep writing. Write at least three feature length screenplays.

I am not interested in writing as a hobby, a sideline, something I do while I hold down a 9-5 job. I'll be 45 in 2010, and I am going to make every effort to achieve my ambitions.

We will see what I have to look back on come Christmas 2010...

Love the goals, everyone! It'll be neat to see where we all stand in a year.

There's a file on my hard-drive called 'scriptideas.docx'. It's a list of scripts I want to write. There are ideas for 10 feature-length screenplays on it, a mixture of adaptations and original ideas, and a couple of ideas for series.

I want to have written three features off that list by the end of 2010. It's that simple, really. That, and a handful of shorts that need to be good, interesting and filmable. I want at least one credit by the end of the year, and I want a portfolio of work to be able to show to people. By this time next year, I'll be almost finished at uni and need to decide whether this is what I actually want to pursue in life.

It's time to take it seriously, I think. It's gonna be fun!

My goal is to rewrite my first screenplay until it's perfect. Then complete at least one more. By the end of the year, I hope to have two solid screenplays to either sell or, at the very least, enter into contests. This is a huge year for me. I'll be 30 at the end of it. If I haven't made some strides in writing, I'll have to get another 9-to-5. Not looking forward to that again.

I have been writing now for 1 year. My goal is to have a feature length script I have in a competition to at least make it to the quarter finals.

To rewrite my first full length script is on my agenda for 2010 as well.

My main third goal is to do my hardest full length yet ( I stopped doing shorts after my second one) and see to it this script brings to light a long over due mis-justice that needs to be brought into the light.

Write a romantic comedy, write the best zombie movie ever made, rewrite my third feature from scratch and network my ass off. 2010 is gonna be a big year.

Get something I've written made on film. (Might actually be pretty close to this one, if it doesn't fall through)

Same shit that's been on my list since 2003.

Revise the hell out of a 156 page adventure I wrote this year, maybe write something else, and get back into regular script reading on this site. If you've got something you'd like read, feel free to PM me.  I've read about 5 features in the past week so I think that's a good start.

It's great to have goals and congratulations on being so motivated. One thing I'd suggest is that when setting goals it is better to set ones that you have control over and are to do with your performance. So while it would be great to sell a screenplay, unfortunately it isn't something you can control and is dependent on other people.

Whereas if you set a goal to get your screenplay in the hands of 200 agents/producers/directors that is a tangible goal that you have some control over. The problem with goals that are reliant on other people is that if they don't eventuate you can get down on yourself for not achieving what you set out to, even though it may be through no fault of your own.

Your screenplay sounds interesting, good luck with it. Do you have other features to showcase your abilities as a writer? I have heard many stories where a writer works extremely hard on one script and manages to get a meeting with a producer. That particular script might not be right for them though so they ask the writer what else they have, only to be met with a blank stare. Missed opportunity.

It's been stated before and can't be stated enough in my opinion--

Don't just go for the gold. The gold will only leave you grasping for something else... some "other gold".

Rather, go for the thing you can't grasp in the first place. The thing you can't hold but is always out of reach.

Go for that.

If you do, you'll never have a missed opportunity.

Continue to grow my feature-screenplay portfolio, have a script for each of the main genres. So therefore:

- Write a comedy feature
- Write a drama feature
- Write a documentary

- Adapt a book

I want to write a horror script, something very different for me. A zombie one possibly.
I also want to re-write some of my scripts but thats probably not gonna happen.

I've a couple of features on the go since mid year. One is about Mal Evans, the Beatles roadie, the other a futuristic one involving aliens and football.

i'd love to do a collab with any SS people. Preferably Jeff (sorry buddy, I know THAT ain't gonna happen!).

Away from writing, I hope St.Kilda wins it's second flag after 44 years!

Write at least one hopefully two features. I'm not really interested in shorts anymore, although I would write one if I got a cracker of an idea that was too good to discard.

Spend more time reading and reviewing both produced and unproduced feature length scripts on Simply Scripts. I feel like I get more out of that than I do reading the how to write screenplay books these days. I've read enough of them.

I've also decided not to do further study next year.  So I’ll have more time for writing than I had this year.

Keep writing. Write more than I have in any previous years. Try to get something to come from it.

My love of cigarettes and whiskey keep me more than warm at night. Well, I'm not sure but usually I wake up warm. Apart from that time I awoke in the Gents of Victoria Station. That was a bit messy.

Whiskey & Cigarettes. You can live with very happily them. And it just ain't bothering with, if you have to live to without. Although that time draws a lot quicker if you do indulge. Diddums. I'm going to miss all the excitement with nappies and Alzheimer's at the end. Woe is me!

As regards that 08/09 thing you had, I think most have done that in our time. I believe it was Woody Allen once said about unreciprocated love...

My goals are rather extensive and go beyond writing. I plan to:

--Produce 2 screenplays in their entirety from acquisition to presentation (have one in pre-prod now)
--Present Fempiror Books 2 and 3 (Book 2 is finished as a first draft right now)
--Complete concept albums for 2 musicals I wrote a long time ago (have one that's about halfway through recording the instrumental parts now)

That makes me 2 movies, 2 book, and 2 albums. Potentially, each movie has a soundtrack, which would mean 4 albums, though I hope to not have to write the music for all of them.

At the moment, I'd really like to get over this sinus infection... It really, really blows (my nose).

In one scene, he is on a date with a professed nymphomaniac. She tells him she believes in having sex anywhere, anytime, and with anyone!

Believe me, this is the kind of thing that could happen to me!

Trying really hard not to turn this into a therapy session... 'cause frankly I could use it, too. And I'm sure others could as well.

My goals are pretty straight forward, read and write more.  I'm so lazy when it comes to writing, I come with a great idea, plan it and then spend days writing the first page, I need motivation aghhh!!!

I'm also going to read more, I probably owe a lot of reads by now.  I did say I was going to read the 7WC's but I about to start Sean's 'Solium' first.  If I do owe anyone a read please let me know, I'm very forgetful...it's my age.

I'm in the same boat as most here - write more features. That's it.

I doubt I'll be doing any shorts unless I get an idea too good to ignore, but that's doubtful.

As of 2010, I do not plan to write any more shorts, and to concentrate entirely on features - though it remains to be seen how that goes!

I will probably still aim to enter OWC's though, just to keep me writing - but beyond that, it will be features only next year, I hope.

I have a rather nice idea for a short that I may write before New Year's Day - I have so far written 99 pages this year, since my revival in August - it would be nice to break 100 before the year is out.

Goals...

Well, I quit smoking two years ago after 33 years of being controlled by nicotine.

Last year I maintained being an ex-smoker.

For 2010 I think I'm finally able to focus on other goals besides what can I do not to smoke.
(It's been a hard road)

For 2010 I want to be a better person...

And to write one script that means something.

I'm hoping to get representation in 2010 and to get back into competitions (I think I entered two this year). I also want to get over my writer's block and write two features.

I’m finishing up polishing my latest feature, a Thriller/Murder Mystery with Horror elements, so obviously I want to sell it or at the very least get an agent or find more work. When I’m done with it, it’ll look totally like a pro script. Plus it’s got a kickass third act.

I’ve been consumed for a while now with writing something that has it all. My goal is to write something so good it can’t be ignored. I want to write something so awesome the first words out of the agent, producer, or studio executive’s mouth is, “Fuck everything else I’ve ever read!”

It’s going to be so awesome, they’re going to take the last “hot Hollywood script” they read from the latest “hot new writer,” open it up on the floor, shit on it, set it on fire, then football kick it into a truckload of dynamite. Cursing it as it explodes.

It’s going to be so awesome…

Oh, I’m sorry. Was I rambling? Sorry about that.

So yeah, goals are:

1) Write an awesome script that no one can deny is awesome.

2) Sell said awesome script.

3) Find someone awesome to represent me.

I’ve got plenty of goals beyond that but first things first.

With at least one proper year behind I feel that I've wrote enough shorts to post one a month for 2010.

I want to concentrate now on features.  I only wrote shorts to get the basics and learn the craft.

I'm currently rewriting a feature for a director so that is good, but then again not my idea, so bad.  A delay.

I have enough material to work on a feature for my world war two film, so a true story but not an original story.

I'm looking to the latter half of the year to come up with a brand new story from scratch.

Come what may, get three pages per day on that horrible white page.  That way I'll finally get down on the page some of the great ideas I've had floating round my head for about ten years. I've held off touching my greatest ideas as I wanted to be able to do them justice when I rolled the camera. Now is the time to let go of the fear and unleash them.

2. Make and market my first feature film. That will involve a whole list of secondary goals that I won't bore you with here. Essentially I want to become as adept at the craft of filmmaking as possible and be as much in control of cinema language as I am with story.

I've been practicing my visualizing skills a lot recently, storyboarding, studying the way the best Directors handle scenes and I feel like I've improved immensely over the last couple of months in terms of my cinematic knowledge. I don't know whether I've just hit a saturation point, but I feel a lot more confident. Now I just need to put it into practice.

3. Develop a slate of features that are ready or near-ready to shoot.

There are a few other things I'm toying with, but those are the critical ones.

Not only do I want to sell my screenplay, I also want it to go into production. By 2011 I hope to have a nice empire built from my screenplay. By 2012 I hope to order a kid's meal from a popular fast food joint and have toys based on the characters from my screenplay packaged next to the burger and fries.

1. Lose a few pounds to run in a 5k this spring for my kid's school.

3. Polish up that 7WC script for some contests this year.  Be nice to place in a Movie Poet contest this year.

4. Write that romantic comedy that I've been sitting on for wayyy to long.

5. Learn to play the electric bass.

I have set myself a personal challenge to write a feature length screenplay - 90 pages or more - within the first month of the year. I am back at work on Monday, so need to get well into by then or I may never get started. I say this every year and have never managed it yet.

Anyway, to this end, I have decided to take a bit of a break from SS while I focus all my energies on the job in hand - writers are lazy buggers and will use any distraction as an excuse not to actually do any work! So rather than posting here about how I can't get writing on my feature, I need to sit down and just concentrate solely on that!

The upshot of this is that I won't be around for a while - not until I have finished the script at any rate (so Feb 2014 probably!). Just thought I'd mention this - don't suppose anyone will even notice, but in case you do, I didn't want you think I'd fallen in the fountain in Trafalgar Square during a riotous night of partying on New Year's eve!

On second thoughts...NAAAH.

I guess my goals are similar to many others, but stating them "out loud" will be a good thing for me.

I plan to be more active on SS, specifically reading and reviewing.

I have a very bad habit of rarely finishing anything I start, which is why have only one script available to read on SS. I plan - NO, I WILL - change that in 2010.

I need to force myself to write, not just think about what I want to write. I've learned that it's far too easy for me to be lazy, and the only way I ever accomplish anything is through momentum. I know I have to get words on paper (on screen actually), no matter how painful it is - I must start somewhere in order to get somewhere.

I'm also a very habitual person, so if I get in the habit of being lazy - and I am in that habit now - I get nothing done. But if I get in the habit of being creative and productive I can sustain it - I think.

Confidence has always been a problem for me, and the fear of failing has kept me from trying. I believe that I do have *some* talent for screenwriting and I'm slowly developing skill. The one script I have had posted here got some very positive feedback (Last Cigarette from the February 08 OWC), and I should have used that boost in confidence to write more but I didn't.

I'm rambling a bit...

My short term goal is to tackle some small projects, specifically the OWC entries that I started but didn't quite complete (there are three). Good or bad, I'm getting them done and getting them out there.

Frankly, I've felt like a fraud for far too long. I've been on SS for 4 and 1/2 years, and expressed many opinions, but, due to my creative inactivity, I always felt like I had no right to do so. I'm going to earn that right in 2010.

New to the forums, folks.

I just finished a spec pilot script for a TV show that centers on the tension between one's college-age ideals and the wielding of power on behalf of those ideals.  Hopefully you'll see it posted on the site in the next week or so.

Anyway, my goals for 2010:
1) Get feedback for the aforementioned pilot, do a rewrite, and submit it to contests, agents, etc.
2) Complete a second episode for this spec TV show.
3) Work on my first feature-length screenplay.

This may seem like a modest list, but considering it took me years to finish a novel I self-published last year, and have only just started with the whole screenwriting thing, I think it's an ambitious list for 2010.

I'm hoping to have three features up on these boards this year.  One feature is already written, but I won't be able to post it until November (long story).  I also hope to get representation.

My own writing goal for 2010 -- for those who might care -- once SoulShadows is complete, I am really going to make an effort to wrap up Starbuck Starr this year.

Thought I'd dig out this thread since 2010 will be over in less than seven hours (GMT). Having looked back through...it makes for interesting reading!

My 2010 goals, as stated about 367 days ago, were:

- write 3 features
- write a 'handful' of interesting, filmable shorts
- get a credit on a finished film by the end of the year

#1 didn't happen. BUT! I've got a live-action short in post-production in Canberra (an extensively re-written version of Colliteral Damage), and thanks to Michael I've just managed to tick off #3. A decent year, although I'm disappointed with myself on the features front. Can't really explain why I didn't do it, either. Tsk.

So everyone who posted on here at the end of '09: have a look back and see what you said, and whether you accomplished it or not! Be interesting to see how people did, and maybe share some stories about what you did accomplish in a writing / film-making sense this year. For instance: Breanne didn't mention anything about shooting her own film in 2009, and yet she did! Rick, what happened to that first feature? James - where's that zombie script?

Also, if a wonderful mod could re-title this thread something like 'Goals for the Year Ahead', then we could all post 2011 goals? Rather than starting a new topic and clogging up the boards and portal. Mine are:

- write those bloody features (I want the first one, Little Furry Bastards, written and posted by the end of March)
- get onto IMDB (hopefully the Canberra project will play out well)
- get some hands-on experience on film sets / in the industry, in some capacity

Anyone else?

P.S. Looking back through, it's a shame to see some once-familiar faces who've moved on to pastures new. Niles, Matt Dressel, Rob...hope you're achieving happiness and success wherever you've ended up, guys.

The best zombie movie ever has got a full blown treatment and a few scattered pages. I doubt many here will think it's the best ever but it's gonna be a straight party movie, designed to have its audience blacked out from alcohol intake and unable to watch another movie by the time it's over.

My third feature is not worth salvaging but I did make some headway.

Indeed, 2010 was a big year. I think I managed to accomplish a lot more than the more meager aspirations I set for myself in 2009.

2011 looks to be even bigger.

I never made any goals for 2010 due to the fact that I knew my writing would take a backseat to the birth of my son, my family move, my job promotion and a bit of traveling.

So, in regards to my non-writing accomplishments for 2010 - they were a grande success.

For 2011:

1. Finish my 3 feature scripts I am currently working on.
2. Take back my creature feature that has been in development help and re-shop it.
3. Compete in a OWC again.
4. Call it a day.

PS - for like the 10th time, I've just surpassed 700 posts. Let's see if I can keep it above 700 this year.

My goal is to continue writing and rewriting-- everything upon the Great Aleph and with such a master, what's a gal to do? Really, the certainty is the great uncertainty. Let's see, the best goal for 2011...

I've not actually hit any of my 2010 goals. Although I did get something made which wasn't an original goal.

Well, I did hit one of my goals. The one to write something that actually means something. My short "Focus" made it to the finals of the Namibian Film Awards.

Another goal was to be a better person... well, I'm still having a hard time with that I have a bit of a temper, but I'm still working on it.

To get my comedy feature finished, and produced. (There is a little interest in it)

To maybe write another comedy, too or maybe a romatic comedy.

And a goal not related to screenwriting: I'm gonna win big either on the lottery or at blackjack, and become a millionaire.

2010 goals were:

1) "Revise the hell out of a 156 page adventure I wrote this year (09)."  Did that and am happy with how it's coming around.

2) "Maybe write something else."  Did that too.

3) "Get back into regular script reading on this site."  Well...I read all the OWC's anyway ha-ha.  

Goals for 2011 are: Get my new feature posted, write another feature, write at least 5 shorts, get at least a couple of those posted, and out of James' book, network the hell out of myself.

Yeah, I noticed that too.  Why did these people leave?  Rob was a regular.

Well, in the past year I joined two additional peer review hubs, including this one. Both have kept me on my toes. I am still meeting my goals regarding feature lengths and rewrites.

But the best thing is that 2010 closed with a bang....as it will kick off 2011 with two short scripts of mine being filmed- one intended for a film fest market (I even did some additional work on it per request by the filmmaker as he wanted "a hallway scene" and "an office scene") and "Clean Up Crew" shoots in the next month or so in LA.

The second (Breaking Eggs) was still a bit iffy, but the Inktip newsletter the other day got my hopes up....and while the same fella looks to do a Stephen King Dollar Baby on the side---the mere idea of my name and King's in the same sentence boosted my ego before the ball dropped.

(I know it's nothing to get that excited about--but it's the idea that counts)

I wrote in january of last year...

I have been writing now for 1 year. My goal is to have a feature length script I have in a competition to at least make it to the quarter finals.

To rewrite my first full length script is on my agenda for 2010 as well.

My main third goal is to do my hardest full length yet ( I stopped doing shorts after my second one) and see to it this script brings to light a long over due mis-justice that needs to be brought into the light.

I was able to complete those goals along with two shorts and another feature as well last year.  So all in all it was a good year.

This year, I have two scripts in two seperate contest. I hope to do well in both. It is my wish to complete two feature lenght scripts and a 10 part series for which I just started on.

My goal for this year of 2011 is to direct and produce my Sunset Summer film, and get it into theaters by next summer - thought that's another 'goals' list

Also I plan to have my Dreams of Reality script completed by years end.

And have steady work as an actor.  

To recap:

-Direct and produce Sunset Summer
-Become a working actor
-Complete Dreams of Reality

I think's that pretty much all I have at this time. I have a couple of shorts that I'd to film, but they are not as important as my top 3.  At least not yet.
