Because of how timezones work, Australia got this first

It's a Charlie Kaufman Netflix Original, based on a 2016 book I didn't read.

Kaufman combined with the lack of boundaries of a Netflix movie means this is super indulgent, creatively, even more so than Synedoche, but I still really liked it.

My favourite thing about it was using the inconsistency of the characters (their ages, jobs, appearance) from scene to scene (the protagonist's job/area of study changes about five times in the first half) to create the unsettling mood. Toni Collete ages and de-ages within one scene in particular; the narrative doesn't really mention it, but the protagonist (who is unnamed) does.

It's less entertaining if you go into it with a view to "crack" the code and figure out the mystery. Just let it be weird. The resolution is underwhelming.

EDIT: Also, it's actually really funny. The main character's boyfriend tells a horrifying and disgusting story about how all the pigs recently died on the family farm; a scene later, his mother serves them a ham saying "everything served here is fresh from the farm".

Ha! Ben, I thought maybe that title was referring to how dead it is here on SS at the moment, but thankfully not.

Slim pickings on Netflix at the moment, so thanks for the heads up.
Will check it out!

Excited to check this out! Read the book a couple of times last year. It's a quick and easy read, and I'm not sure how Kaufman is going to translate this to screen, but if anyone can do it it's him.

Anyone who likes this should check out Iain Reid's other book, "Foe." I can see that one making a jump to the big screen in no time.

Kev, I looked the book up and spoiled the ending for myself by reading the wiki page. It sounds like a long Twilight Zone episode.

The book is still very much worth a read, even knowing the twist. I finally got around to watching the movie, and I really liked it. Kaufman kept things super ambiguous though. I can only imagine some people will be really frustrated by it because I know I'd be confused without the read prior.

However, I think this is still a really effective movie. It does a great job of creating unease and all the performances are fantastic (Tony Collette especially but unsurprisingly). I'd recommend this to anyone who's a fan of Kaufman's work.
