I want to direct, really badly, but I don't want to use any of my script ideas just yet. I like to get actually get some kind of funding, even if minimal for my ideas. You can't really do that unless you build a reel of your work.

So I thought of this idea to write a script based of one of H.P. Lovecraft tales, because no one has ever done any of his work justice, short of Re-Animator. I know his work from 1923 on is public domain. clearly I wouldn't try to redo Re-animator.

I don't really plan on selling the work, but I wouldn't mind using it to show people I can direct, and maybe play it at local festivals or something.

So I was wondering, how does one go about searching if his work is public domain for use? or should I just "Re-imagine" gah, to use a Rob Zombie word, one of his storys in a unique and original way, but still stick to that lovecraft style. Maybe change the characters, settings and ending or whatever, just use his work as a frame for my story.

clearly I am not asking for legal advice here either, just so you know. any thoughts are apprenticed.

EDIT: I think I may have posted this in the wrong forum. if I did would you kindly move it? thank you.

If you are looking for books in the public domain, go to

http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/authors.html

If you can find the book there, it is in the US Public Domain.  Much of Lovecrafts works are in the public domain.
