Hey all! Is anyone still interested in this or did we burn out on it last time around? For those who are unfamiliar with this, it was an attempt to discuss produced/professional scripts and what worked with the script and why/why not. Sorry I couldn't find the original thread... I even used the search feature. |

I think the script club is an excellent study no matter whether it's professional scripts we're working on or amateur.
I'm still interested.

Okay, great!
Do we want to do another one or do we want to wait until the KILLER GAME is over... or is this something that draws a different crowd? |

Maybe you should wait til the game is over, so you have complete focus on the club?
Just a suggestion.
I would like to participate myself. I was never able to get around to the other ones, tho. |

I've got to work at the hospital in the next couple of days and my turn is coming up here quick; so I'm game as soon as my turn is over.
This round of Killer is going to be wrapped up soon I think; so it might be good to let everyone finish this and catch a breath before we move on.

Great! Maybe we can kick around some ideas on what to discuss until the Killer Game is over. I can probably come up with a script in any genre for discussion, so let me hear some suggestions. |

If you want a short- go ahead and put Come Saturday Mourning up on the chopping block. If you want a feature, how about one of Michael Previtt's. Sandra |

I was talking more about the way it's written. Produced/Purchased scripts always seem to read different to me. It's all a crap shoot, really, but it could potentially be a good gauge for the writer. If it were unproduced that is. I doubt the writer of a sold script would care. |

The produced/not produced doesn't matter to me so much right now. For me it's something that has some kind of meaning woven into it like Cindy Keller's "Garbage".
Then again, I think every script has meaning woven into it; so I don't know what I'm talking about right now.

Yeah, you can tell a produced from an unproduced -- the unproduced one is often better. In all honesty, though, not disclosing the state or writer of the script has some appeal to it. The only hang up is that whoever selects it will know and the writer will have to submit an "unlabeled" copy. This would cause a minor problem in that the script club was intended to provide a different insight than just a review that was to be posted on the script's thread. Something to consider as well... What if it were a fully produced one and part of the deal is to compare the script to the final movie? Some scripts undergo some pretty vast changes between paper and film. Labyrinth comes to mind right away. |

Yep. Understood what you were talking about after I posted it. I would like to do a produced script. But based on past experiences I think it's counter productive. Very few people want to criticise sold scripts. Therefore, I think what would benefit people most would be to do an unproduced script. I had hoped I would have my rewrite of Demon Beach done in time but it doesn't look like that will happen. Any script is pretty much ok with me as long as it isn't a western or war movie. |

Script Club = awsomeness-coolness.
We've done what comedy, horror & sci-fi so far?
Mcornetto, as far as western or war "movies" (not exactly the same as script) genre is rarely the problem when it comes to bad or boring scripts or movies.
I don't expect this to be part of script club, but I finished reading Frost / Nixon yesterday and recommend it if anyone what's to read a good script where action is dialogue. Within the script they liken the two to boxers. Fitting.
And, what's this Killer Game?
|

It should be an unproduced, member script. Don has expressed his preference for that privately, and that should be trump, I think.
It should definately be a member who is active on the boards -- in terms of reviews -- not just posts.
I would hesitate (a bit) about putting someone's very first script out there. As this is meant to be a learning experience, it should perhaps be someone with a proven track record of generating scripts that are both readable and correct in terms of the mechanics of storytelling.
And it should be something posted on the boards -- with the same version accessible to everyone. Not something that has to be emailed around.
I am not sure why concealing the name of the author would really make that much difference, and it would probably generate more confusion than anything. |

Cool,
I'm always in Pia. For me it's fine and i don't mind if the script is from a member or a produced script.
As for suggestions I'm not sure. If bert has a new feature he hasn't told us about then let's go with it hehe. Or one of Mike's script. Still i'm interested in reading one of Mr.Z features when he has one finished.
Let's wait for Killer Game to be finished first so we can focus totally here.

Now there is an interesting thought, Nik. I happen to know there is one floating about. Not sure why he has not posted it up, but if somebody can twist his arm (coughPiacough), that could make for a very good choice. |

If by “twist his arm” you mean a private strip on webcam, I’m good. Seriously, I’m flattered that my name was dropped, but the script you’re talking about needs a very serious rewrite, and I wouldn’t want to receive feedback on things I already know aren’t working. It's far from "finished", despite the fact that I typed "Fade out". Thanks for considering my work, though. |

So are we talking about a script that has been possibly beaten into the ground already, is probably production ready, and could use a final polish or two from some in-depth discussion to really show off the holes in it? Using one that has been hit before by more than one reviewer and that the author has been willing to rewrite already might be a decent choice. That way we're not all just flapping our gums over something that'll never change.
By the same regard, I would think a first draft of anything would not be the best choice.
Oh, and Busy Little Bee, for the Killer Game, check out the "SS Craven" threads. |

Boy this thread sure took off! That's great people are still interested. The boards seem to me to have been pretty quiet lately except for the Killer Game thread. Maybe some new people would be interested in this as well. Any script or genre is fine with me. Does anyone want to be our "host/hostess" to guide us through the different subjects to be discussed? and Z... I thought last time we did the webcam thing your computer crashed. |

Ahhh, another Script Club...cool. I'm way in for sure! Just found this thread, and glad I did.
I say we should definitely do an unproduced script from someone in here that offers alot of their time and opinions, in regards to reviews, posts, and just downright help.
"Demon Beach" would have been an interesting choice, as it has just about everything you can imagine...great writing...not so great wriitng, hilarious scenes, wierd scenes, whacky characters, bizarre story, unique approach...uh...alot of stuff I guess.
Count me in, and be prepared for my usual complete and utter "pull no punches" honesty in what I think.
I'd also say we should most likely wait until the final corpse has hit the deck on the SS Craven...but we should come up with some options for the new featured Script Club script.

I'm not so sure I did that good last time. This is still a fairly new idea and we don't seem to have a solid format to follow... DS, I'm glad you're planning on participating. I would like to do Demon Beach too... maybe we can wait a couple of weeks for Michael to finish his? Would be a nice little present to go with his excellent handling of the KILLER GAME and his new moderator status. |

You know how hard it is to read that and not go suggesting something?
I did have to ponder it though, since most moderator scripts tend to be read to death, and I did come up with something (conceitedly, it is one of my own). I have one that is a no-budget wonder that I plan on shooting sometime within the next six months. It hasn't been read too much to speak of on the boards, and I planned on hedging my way through once more before tearing it apart to plan shooting it. It's on the drama board, and it's called JAGGED. It clocks out to all of 78 pages, so it's not too long.
This time next year, you'll be able to watch it (provided all goes as I plan). I know that's a shamelessly self-promotional plug, but if we don't promote ourselves, God knows, no one else will. Thought I'd throw that out in case it draws any interest. |

I don't think it has to be a moderator's script, but I know George and I have read a lot of his scripts. I know he knows his way around the art of writing a screenplay. I think it would be a great help if we all helped George write the best script possible since he will film it. That's what we should be doing. Helping each other. Cheer each other on and when possible help our fellow writers succeed. We can do Captain Cornetto's next and maybe one of mine I'm planning to film after that. |

Sounds like a plan Hostess Pia.
George first, then Captain Cornetto, and then Pia. I would add my name on the end. But my feature is confusing without the artwork. Think David Lynch.
Ps, love the new avatar Pia, wow. |

Where has he been? If we do an unproduced script, it's very beneficial if the writer is around.
|
Mike sent me an e-mail saying he's been pretty busy with a lot of things. He hasn't had enough time for the internet, but he's told me he plans to start posting again soon. He says hello to everybody. lol |

Okay, since I seem to be the hostess here. We'll kick this one off tomorrow and we'll give it a week before postings on the script will start. That way we'll give all interested parties a chance to read and digest the chosen script before discussion starts. Thanks you all for your interest and participation! |

Quoted from Dreamscale Which script has ben chosen? |
http://www.simplyscripts.net/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?b-drama/m-1129852695/s-0/I have never read this one, either, though I am quite familiar with the Willson library of works. Hope I can find the time to participate.
Quoted from Our Hostess ...we'll give it a week before postings on the script will start... |
Please adhere to this, Pia, and do not start the thread for a while -- or start it, then have a Mod lock it until you are actually ready to begin. With some of the past threads, people who read it right away were off and running -- and by the time people who took a bit longer to read were ready to join in -- the conversation was essentially over. |

Well, I'm on pins and needles. I'm resisting the urge to ask how slabby liked it, but I'll be good and wait...and wait and wait and wait...
And yeah, I'll participate in the coming ones to make proper payment for all the attention. |

haha well, I at least finished it. Be happy about that, George. There's a lot of scripts on here I would start but stop because I can't get into 'em. I feel you will benefit greatly from whoever reads and gives input on it. I have some suggestions myself, but I shall wait too. |

I hear you bert. I'll start the new one right now, so feel free to lock it for a week. Actually, I have to go for a bit, but will do it when I come back. What board should it be on anyway? I forgot if we did unproduced screenplay discussion or screenplay class or whatever. |

It's been on the Screenwriting Class board before, and really, that's fine. I locked the thread for its week (which I presume will mean to unlock it next Monday -- I'll try to get up early). Thanks again for picking one of mine. Kind of an honor... |

I think it's an honor to review a script for someone who knows "how" to shoot a film-- no matter what camera you were using or any of the other details. You are working hard and I can see and I admire someone with aspirations that lead to further action. I know that I will never be doing any camera work, but I'm interested in learning some of the strategies and "mind work" that goes on in this process. I know the tedium you are talking about, not in the same realm, but in editing and going over the same thing again and again. When I used to study guitar, I did the same musical sequences again and again and although tedious, there was a satisfaction-- still, it didn't change the fact that I was frustrated in those times. I remember that frustration very clearly. I can also understand how hard it is to look at one's own work-- and know that your vision, and what you see as your "semi- finished work" are completely different things. ...But that's the process. You need to be congratulated on your perseverance; your day in the sun will most certainly happen with your good attitude. I'm looking forward to reading your script George. I hope I can assimilate some of your experience and brilliance and any other "iances" that exist in your world. Sandra |

No worries, Mcornetto. I'll follow the rules.
I've been in the music realm too, Sandra. Actually, I did music before writing, having played any number of instruments for different bands from school to church for the last 20 years. For the moment, my instrumentality extends to guitar, drums, piano, and bass (depending on the need of the moment). And for an added level of tedium, my day job has to do with maintaining a piece of a computer program involving some programming here and there when the code acts up. I actually enjoy digging through line after line of computer logs and then the code looking for the problem. |

Someone suggested something about using a host that can lead this into something that might actually be useful to the author .... or something like that....
I tried to get someone else to be the host, but....
Anyway, I'm out of it now. Someone else needs to finish and in the future maybe George can be the host since he's the mod of these boards anyway. |

Ok, the deleted posts had to do with someone commenting about the direction of the discussion which led Pia to feel like her ability to lead the group is being questioned. As such, she has asked for someone else to do it. Given that it's on the Screenwriting Class board, it's actually most appropriate if I took the reigns.
I split the posts related to this topic off the Jagged post and onto the Script Club thread, so that post can stay on topic, and this one can discuss the general aspects of the exercise, which I've liked since it began. I just hadn't been around enough to be a part of it.
However, I'm more present at this point, so I don't mind taking care of it, so Pia can have that much less stress in her life. With 3 hot young blondes to care for, she's got a lot of stress... |

Yeah, well my post had nothing to do with the host and was more of a blanket statement over things ending up all over the place and making it that much more difficult for the writer to respond after a substantial period of time, but alright. |

Pia, relax. Whatever was said doesn't matter. I don't see anything wrong with what you're doing at all. People don’t realize how nerve-racking it is to host one of these things until they’ve done it. It’s almost impossible to keep a discussion on track and people who have never hosted one think it’s much easier than it is. Hang in there Pia.

This is so and it rings true no matter what milieu you're involved in. Looking at something on the surface always is easy. Doesn't seem like a hard thing at all. But then when you start studying, you learn the tricks of the trade. Maybe you're learning how to lay gravel for the foundation of your garage. Maybe you're learning how to make a sourdough starter. Maybe you're learning how to calm a patient in the hospital with your mind power. Whatever it is, there is knowledge and technique involved and it's always a Helluva job!!!!! Pia, don't feel bad. I missed the discussion that went on, but this is what I think: You are a high minded woman who is troubled by a polarity issue. Some of the most intelligent people that have lived have suffered the same; so embrace the fact and know that many of us are extremely thankful to be in your company!!! Sandra |

I agree!! Whole heartedly...I like very much how you broke down the topic points we would talk about Pia...and it is true that it is hard for anyone to maintain absolute control. When I wrote the message about you having me laughing Pia...I thought YOU were deleting the posts It amused me...now I undertand your frustration... My sincere apologies to Pia and to the thread...I'm sorry...I got carried away and posted comments that were not appropriate on the actual class thread. Now I understand they belong here. Slap me silly or senseless I deserve it. |

It does appear that Jagged is winding down. We don't want to run this into the ground, so let the discussions begin over what to do next. Somewhere back on this thread, there was a discussion of doing something by Mcornetto, by Pia, and a script called "Demon Beach". We'll figure out a good time frame to do the next one and all with the Shiva game coming up.
Personally, I'm game for any time, but for now, we can brainstorm a future script to read. Once we have the script and time frame nailed down, we'll follow the same basic format as before...a week to read and a week (or however long or short it takes) to discuss it. I know I appreciated the comments and Jagged will be that much better as a result, so I'm eager to share the wealth. |

Good idea I think to wait until the Shiva game is over. Any script is fine with me as long as it is by an SS member who participates on these boards and maybe even shows interest by participating in the Script Club itself. Demon Beach sounds good to me and I know he's an excellent writer too and takes suggestions and critique well. If you want (after Demon Beach) I have one I'm planning to film myself that I could use some input on as well. It is however a feature version of Daddy's Home so I don't know how many people would want to re-read that one... I can take harsh reviews fairly well by know though. I've been trained by Phil... Anyway, thanks George for taking over and you can count on me taking part. |

I'm interested as always. I'd actually recommend doing one sooner than later, as Shiva isn't even getting under way for over a week.
I'm cool with whatever though. I actually read "Demon Beach" awhile back. It's really whacky and should provide some great interaction in here. It's one of those scripts that some will love, and others will most likely hate...which obviously provides good discussion possibilities.
I hope Cornetto has made some changes, which I bet he has. I actualy laugh out loud quite often when I think of certain scenes in this script, as it's very funny at times. Interesting to see what everyone else has to say.

Demon Beach will be ready very soon. I did make some changes, cleaned up the writing, clarified my meanings, and hopefully didn't cut out anything you laughed at loud about. So if you all want to do that for the next script club then I should be posting the revision within a week or so.
I don't have any problem with it happening alongside Shiva. I don't think the game is really that time consuming for anyone playing. It's a bit time consuming for me - but if you do Demon Beach then I don't have to read the script.
But whatever is decided then I'm up for it. |

Capt. Cornie...the dancing...I love the incessant dancing of whatever that guy's name is! His comments are classic to the other "dancers"!! Seriously, for some wierd reason, I just can't get it out of my mind. It's my kind of humor for sure. At least once every week, it comes into my mind and I laugh out loud, sometimes in the strangest places. People probably think I'm nuts...oh yeah, I guess I am nuts!
Looking forward to the revisions brother!!!! |

Actually, my understanding of the game is that while it requires the participants to "keep up", the writing side isn't that involved. I know Mcornetto's part as the moderator of the game is more involved since he isn't just watching the game....he's controlling it. So doing one of his scripts at a time he can't really pay attention's not too bad an idea.
As for the simultanoeous run for those who are wanting to do both... Script Club takes a whole different part of the brain, though. Gotta be more analytical than creative.
So past Demon Beach (to be fair) does anyone else have any other suggestions they've been pondering? |

Well... I would like to have some serious intelligent input on that one feature I'm planning on producing... After Demon Beach if possible. |

I'm here and ready to learn from whatever comes next. I feel an affinity with the people here; so that's actually a very great gift that I appreciate.
I hope that I can continue and contribute to this great dream of ours and maybe with some luck, we'll join together-- build something that people can discuss and meditate over for many years to come.

FYI, Michael has posted his most recent revision of Demon Beach here. What we've got coming up on the board is the Shiva game commencing next week (December 1st), and I know some of us are participating in that. So the question is, is the 8th still too hectic for a discussion over Demon Beach, or do we need to wait a little longer? Thoughts? |

There's no such thing as not being good at this. Everyone's thoughts are valuable from the incredibly critical (looking for Dreamscale, there) to the very easygoing. They're all valuable since everyone typically has an opinion about stories of every kind. So don't think you're no good at it, since the very act of reading and commenting says you have something to contribute.
And so far, we have good to go at any time. I'm honestly fine at any time and I am participating in the game. Unless we do get a consensus otherwise, how about we set the read time frame for next week (since the game, as I recall, is a scene at a time, and is posted at a rate of once a day, so it shouldn't be too overwhelming for everyone except our victim) and the critique and discussion for the week after (the week of the 8th)? It does overlap, so if it will cause an issue for those running both, someone will have to let me know. |

I'm good to go too. I'm fighting to complete Nanowrimo and have hit 35 K with characters I'm developing from last year. I started really late this year. It's actually been a completely different Nano year for me.
It's very challenging for me to work on a game like Shiva. I guess I take it a little too seriously, but I do tend to ruminate over the characters and maybe get more into them and their psyche than I do their external world.
One of the most important things for me is working on a deadline because I find it pushes me to pass limits I never thought were possible. I think there's a magic in that and even though a person might be churning it out at such a pace that they might have to stop and wonder about it and maybe even get sick at looking at what sometimes amounts to just scribbles, the effort and passion were there for the moment and sometimes that has to be good enough-- at least for the purpose of momentum. If nothing else, momentum might carry us.

I should mention here too, that whenever it is that we happen to start in December, I think that those of us involved so far have the mindset to work in earnest. It shows because of the planning that has already taken place and I know how much time Michael has spent with the game already.
Again, whatever we fail at, it's a lesson in learning.
The very act of participation in this kind of game engages us and promotes the kinds of calculations that spur us onto thinking from different angles as we dress in varying points of view.
Looking forward to reading the works of Shiva.

All right, so "officially" I'll put up the thread next Monday. Should you wish to read it beforehand, that is up to you. We'll start in with the shredder and Mr. Critical on the 8th. I've read some good marks on this one, so be sure and get out the magnifying glass if you have to. There's no such thing as a perfect script (that Italy section in the Godfather just dragged for me), so as good as it is, there's no doubt room for improvement.
And if you're working on Shiva at the same time, multi-taksing is a useful skill to have... |

The script discussions here have a lot of flavor because we've got such a diversified group from all over the globe. It's really good to see another wonderful mind participating. Happy to see you Tommy, (which, by the way is my father's name). His name was Thomas, but friends often called him Tommy. His presence I think has penetrated me and even though I miss him so much, I feel him around me. So Tommy, thanks for helping me to get back to those times with dad-- even if it's only by virtue of a name you both hold in common. Still, I take each morsel of coincidence as a great truth and I'll say like I force my characters to say: "Go figure!" Good to see you aboard. Sandra |

OK, so the revised script is posted where George said it was, which is a link to teh original "Demon Beach" posting. 106 pages is the new script?
I'm about to start but wanted to make sure this was the correct one. Don't we have a new Script Club thread for this? |

It is locked because the idea was to have the "official" start date be yesterday, and the discussion start next week. I knew full well I wouldn't be able to have read it last week since I do most of my reading between doing stuff at work, and I was only here two days last week. I plan on reading it this week sometime and taking notes as I go along. Sorry if that was unclear. |
