The Big Chill. It shows what you can do with good characterization and with no special effects.

I can't think of a single movie that has influenced who I am today, but I can think of plenty that have influenced the way I write. |

That is the first reply that I agree with. |

All those darn Muppet movies I watched as a child. They had a huge impact on me.
Plus David Lynch and Miyazaki movies as a young adult.
Man, I could write stories about schizo plush toys and shag pile carpet stuffed creatures teaching young girls how to put together the perfect flower bouquet in poorly lit abbttoir.
But alas there is no market for it so what is the point. |

I consider being a writer and the way that I write a part of me. Who I am, and how I think, can be seen in what I write. Phil |

^^ You sure do like Nicole Kidman films...
And what films have influenced me? Hmmm... That's a tought one. I'd say probably The Wackness - The main character was going through a lot of the same shit I was going through when I watched the film... |

No movie has influenced who I am. I was influenced by real life and real experiences.
As far as Kidman goes, I think she's beautiful, but has no sex appeal what so ever. She seems very cold and unfriendly. I liked her better when she was more natural like in DEAD CALM. That was a good movie and she seemed like a real person back then. Natural rules in my book. Just MHO of course. |

Dead Calm! I love that movie. And there isnt a Nicole Kidman movie that I haven't seen or that hasn't influenced me in someway! Mary-Kate Olsen was in the Wackness, I never got around to seeing it! What was it about? |

I'm also in the persuasion of not being influenced, lifewise, by any movie, really. Have I found some tidbits in parts of some of them that were worth keeping in mind? Sure. But you get that out of any fiction, be it movie or novel. My first impression reading the question was that no film has made a significant enough impact on my life to say that it made me who I am.
The closest I think I have to this is the character of Spock from the Star Trek series. I don't know if I can say it was a positive influence, but I was always intrigued by his total logic and emotionlessness to the point that I am very much the same way. Not 100% since I do occasionally get illogical, but for the most part, I handle nearly everything with a cool logic and most of my responses are completely without emotion. My wife hates my lack of emotion.
One conversation went like this:
Her (really excited): Honey, I'm pregnant! Me: Cool.
Now that was an upbeat cool, because I was happy, but I assure you there was no jumping around or announcing to the world that I was going to be a father (again). I'm just not like that. |
