Just recieved an email from someone called Michael Young who says he's a producer wanting to buy one of my scripts.  Thing is, he called me William and never even mentioned which script.  Sounds a bit fishy to me so just wondered if anyone else had recieved an email from him.

I dont really know him, but i got from several others, and they never get back. As you describe he won't get back to you. But ask him more about himself, and which script are his eyes closed on.

Cheers

I'd e-mail him back, too.
What I usually do when I hear from someone, is I google their name and check them out. Sometimes I don't come up with anything though.

Google his name and e-mail him back, asking what script he wants.

Viruses are no laughing matter alffy... no laughing matter at all... unless they bring up that little peanut butter jelly banana guy dancing with maracas, then they're freakin' hilarious! (but seriously they're not (peanut butter jelly with a baseball bat!))

I'm always paranoid about getting a virus so my laughing was one of those nervous chuckles.  Anyway I googled the guys name and all I got was a producer of animation.

I've had a few of those too, but nothing beats this one yesterday. A guy said he was interested in buying my script and I declined, telling him that I was planning to do some more re-writes. His response:

"Hello Ian, I'm sorry, let me explain, I'm not REALLY trying to buy the rights. As I said it's for my class in Production, and my teacher wants me to find a script that I like, contact the author and go through the PROCESS of what it would be like to buy a script. So as much as I like, I can not and am not buying your script. I would appreciate talking with you about your script.  I can be reached at ***-***-****, Thank you for your time."

Anyone besides me think that's messed up?

I don't think it's messed up at all.

If anyone wants your scripts, chances are that it'll be someone starting out.  Tarantino and Cameron have their own writers that they turn to for stuff.  The fact that this director was honest with you is a big thing.  Buying the rights is all part of the process of Tommy Director. here.  Atleast you know that he'll going through normal procedure.

Allfy, you should also ask this guy what he's done and what you can look at of his.

I've first emailed him back to see which script he read, but yeah asking him what he's done would be a good idea.  Thanks Phil.

Hey bobtheballa, your email is not strange at all. (thou the approach is) I got the same kind of email from some producer student who needed a script to do a production break down on and create budget for script. I was like yeah sure why not.

Even a producer has to start somewhere and  go to school to learn their tricks. right?

Apparently Collins College in Tempe Arizona has preproduction students who were assigned to seek permission from writers to use their work to draw up film budgets. I called the head of film and video production for the school for clarification and I’m waiting to hear back.

I’ve had a couple of different students request permission to use short scripts. I’m a little confused as to whether or not they’re supposed to be using shorts or features. I don’t know if they’re asking for shorts without realizing it when they should be using features or if they were assigned shorts so they wouldn’t get overwhelmed.

Hopefully I’ll get some clarification soon.

I've got an email asking exactly the same thing. He made it sound like he had to actually go through with buying/optioning it and has offered me 50 bucks.

I think simply scripts must be on the the message board in that college.
