I thought Zombieland was a great zombie film because it involved fully-developed characters. I look forward to the sequel.

I couldn't get into it... Don't get me wrong, it was probably the best Zombie flick in the last 15 years, maybe more, but it still didn't do anything for me. I didn't care for the characters and thought the movies standout scene was with Bill Murry. Which was, typically for him, really good.
Forgive me, I admit that I have little grasp of the zombie universe other than they represent fears of an unyielding mob mentality, but a large part of the difficulty with zombie stories is that they, as a group, are not really exploitable as a useful commodity.
Their skill level is dirt low, so they can't be used as soldiers, picking lettuce or mowing yards. They cannot be domesticated, so no farm labor or seeing-eye zombies. They're a constant OSHA nightmare with the biting and all. WTH are you going to feed them, realistically? The food costs more than their economic output. There's no Soylent Green option available, not even as dog food. Since they are the undead you can put them in biologically hostile environments, but they still suffer from pressure (no deep water operations), radiation burns (no working in reactor cores) and solar radiation (no extra space vehicle excursions). And that's forgiving the fact they still have no job skills, per se.
Now, if you wanted to make humans the bad guys (not a great leap) maybe we could let them loose on another planet already populated with sentient beings we want gone - Zombie vs. Navi - then there's an actual usage for them. OMG! That's it! Zombie/Alien hybrid! Ellen's gonna have a handful with that!
A semi-smart zombie able to control other zombies... eh, might be something there. Problem is is what would you have the master zombie tell the others to do? Eat those guys over there for not paying the loan shark? Tools of the mafia? Easier ways to solve that problem I suspect.
Otherwise, unless someone wants to go out on a limb and change their functional parameters, it's just "F*cker Scared Me!" stories. Zombie Almost Got Me. Zombie Gladiator. Zombie Fight Club. Oh, and the personal interest ones: My Zombie Wife & Kids. The Zombies in Law. How to Make Love to Your Zombie and Survive. The Zombie that Cried. Look Which Zombie is Coming to Supper. Blah blah blah.
You can make them do anything you want. They can be more intelligent than living humans if you want....maybe they have a direct line to God or the Devil being dead.
Also, they may be commonly used as "mob mentality" or as a metaphor for political apathy/consumerism, but again, you can tell any story or illuminate any theme you choose.
Dead Men Tell No Tales...they do if they are zombies.
They could represent Justice...murder victims coming alive to seek their killers. Hidden secrets that won't rest in the grave. Never-ending love...The love that conquered Even Death itself.
Brilliantly funny film about a world where Zombies are real and kept as servants and workers. Billy Connelly as the lead character is excellent. Really worth watching.

Saw it! Solid 7 out of 10. Could have gone further. Good though.
