Of The Ancients A man who has taught his mind to misbehave

I realise this will probably be buried by the OWC, but I've had an unusually good run of quality shows/movie so thought I'd share.
Underwater (Movie)
Damn, this was this a decent surprise. I guess you could call it Aliens but underwater. You also don't want to think about any of the science for more than a second, but this was just a good film. Fun, a few decent scares, and a generally good looking film.
Vivarium (Movie)
Another really enjoyable film, disturbing with many WTF moments and the creepiest kid in film in a long time. Even the filmmaker isn't 100% sure what it's about and agrees it's very open to interpretation, still a great watch despite some clunky CGI.
I See You (Movie)
The best of the batch, I went in completely blind and was more than pleasantly surprised. This is a movie full of twists and turns that ultimately lead to a really satisfying ending. A quote in the trailer called it “A beautifully crafted puzzle” and that just about sums it up. I’d love to see the screenplay for this as it is a work of genius in my opinion.
The Great (Series)
Everyone needs to watch this immediately. It’s a period piece very loosely based on Catherine the Great. It’s completely ridiculous and hilarious in parts and then perfectly balanced with really good drama. In every episode I have full fits of belly laughter. Looks great, well cast, you just can’t go wrong with this.
On another note, for anyone who followed or weighed into my white man writing person of colour thread, I think The Great possess a similar question as far as, why can people who aren’t Russian or direct decedents of these people tell this story, did anyone check if they were offending anyone. Or does it just not matter?

Warren, regarding your last question: I remember how Russians hated Onegin https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119079/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1And that was very understandable - instances such as a character sings an iconic song about WW2 tanks "Katyusha" pulled it down. It was laughable. Katyusha is known by everyone in the country. And all of the former Soviet republics. So, people should enjoy it unless there are flops like that. Russians do love War and Peace with Audrey Hepburn. American version is my favorite and many others' favorite. Russians have their own version but for me and many others it's long. And there's no Audrey Hepburn in it. The Great is new and there aren't many reviews from Russians just yet. |

I always appreciate your recommendations, Warren. Looking forward to seeing the horror with Helen Hunt, in particular. I thought Underwater might be a dud but you're making me have second thoughts. Thanks. |

I See You really was one of the best films I've seen in a really long while. And Underwater, in my opinion, is very far from a dud. It's just pure entertainment. I don't think you can go wrong with either. |

I, for one, am interested to see if there is backlash. I think 200 or so years is long enough. |

I’ve discovered the world of fan edits in which peeps edit well known movies and make them ‘better’ by cutting some scenes and dialogue and stuff. Last night I watched Terminator 3 cut to 75 minutes and damn was it awesome. I liked the original anyway but the edit makes it tighter, darker and deletes any dodgy comic scenes.
I know it’s illegal lol but the fans are doing it purely to improve certain films and as a challenge too I guess |

I'd love to watch the T3 edited version. Where'd you find it? |

Decided to give this one a watch. I've only watched half of it so far. It's not that the movie is bad, but I'm so disturbed by how bizarre Helen Hunt looks that I have a hard time watching it. WTH happened to her? I always liked her. She seemed like a nice person and a good actress too. |

This has been a major factor for me not checking out the movie. I heard good things about it and it has decent enough reviews, however, when I played the trailer, I was taken aback by how Helen Hunt looked. I really liked her, and still do. But, it was very distracting. And, I wondered if I could focus on the movie with her in it. She disappeared and then reappeared looking different. Plus the movie looked cheaply shot. But, I'll give it a watch. |

I know what you mean about Helen Hunt.
I wonder if unlike the rest of Hollywood going the plastic surgery route, she just got older. It did seem to happen fast though. |

I don't think so. Everyone gets older, but she looks bizarre to the point of being disturbing. Looks to me more like she had an unsuccessful "rejuvenation" thing. If so, I feel sorry for her. I don't think the acting gigs will come her way like they used to. She also looks like she has smoker's skin which I was also noticing on Jamie Lee Curtis in Knives Out. I guess 4k and 8k isn't great for everything... I watched Vivarium, btw. That was disturbing too, but in a good way. |

I caught two of Warren's recommends over the weekend:
I See You: Perhaps Botox gone awry? Smooth and expressionless forehead and eyebrows. Oh yeah, the movie...Overall, I liked it. A couple good twists and the non-linear aspect was done well. Helen Hunt's character could have been played by any actress in Hollywood and probably would've been better without the 'distractions' noted.
Underwater: This was pretty damn good since I was expecting the worse. I love how it wastes no time and gets right to it. Great effects, decent character building and hardly a dull moment. The biggest letdown would probably be the creature SFX. Normally not a big fan of Kristen Stewart but she was a surprise as well. A pretty decent effort.
I still need to watch the T3 fan-edit version. I'm intrigued!
Edit: Apologies to Helen Hunt for the comments. I deleted the disparaging remarks. |

I always felt T3 was slightly underrated. The movie had potential. Especially, the second half and the ending. |

A couple more recommendations...
Raised By Wolves (Series - HBO Max)
I knew nothing about this show, it wasn't on my radar at all. Directed by Ridley Scott, or the first 2 episodes at least and staring Australia's own Travis Fimmel (Vikings).
Raised by Wolves centers around "two androids — Father and Mother — tasked with raising human children on Kepler-22b after the Earth was destroyed by a great war. As the burgeoning colony of humans threatens to be torn apart by religious differences, the androids learn that controlling the beliefs of humans is a treacherous and difficult task."
God damn this is a great show, I love almost everything about it, and the score is just amazing. Massive recommend from me.
Cobra Kai (Series - Netflix)
I know this has been around awhile, but it's relatively new to me and to Netflix. Based 34 years after that legendary Kirate Kid final fight and staring the same cast. This is just another great show, funny and touching with heaps of fan service and nostalgia and just the right amount of cheesyness. I just finished the second season and am eagerly awaiting the third. Another big recommend from me. |

UPPITY on Netflix is a fascinating doc on the first Black Indy Car driver - would make a great biopic |
