It has been awful quiet recently. I'm back properly now my uni year is over, but I do agree - the place has been pretty deserted.
I do have another idea for a challenge-type thing, if anyone's interested? The last one didn't go too badly...it's collaborative, too. Many people involved. Anyone want to hear more, let me know.

The 7WC went great. I thought all the scripts were really nice efforts for being written in such a short time. I never read Sandra's, but I read Thief instead since that one needed more reads.
What do you have in mind for a challenge? I personally prefer to write on my own rather than collabs as I find them very hard to do. What do you other people think?
Or another Script Club maybe, or did that peter out last time?
OWC! Been researching Hard Boiled detective stories to rewrite Hard Boiled Christmas from the 7WC last year. Ordered a used book from Amazon on the topic. Came from the Library in Beverly Hills. Figure that's a good omen.
I'll be skins, too, since I lost a few pounds. Don't work and play well with others, so not real big on the collaborative thing.
Failure is only the opportunity to begin again more intelligently - Dove Chocolate Wrapper
That's cool. I know some people last time (Stevie in particular) were asking about a colab project, but if there's no real support for it then we can do something else.
An OWC would be good. Don't know if I'd take part, because I have a list of scripts I finally want to get around to writing, but anything to get a few more people knocking around. It can get a bit lonely at times...
I actually wouldn't mind partaking in a Script Club exercise. I have plenty of overhyped, produced scripts I've read (and ones heading towards production) ::coughthecabininthewoodscough:: that I'd love to generate discussion on.
I do write badly. Especially after a session. I just can't hit the right keys. Or the left ones. Where are they, by the way. And where me shoes. I thoughta hadem on me feet. Or thereabouts.
Yeah, a new OWC would be great! Its nearly due anyway(I think).
I've been finding it hard to write lately. Haveb been trying to re-write the first 30 pages of Headlong but each time it wa shit. No wonder I DON'T do fucking re-writes!!
But i think i've finally come up with some good stuff - all i needed to do was make it funnier at the start.
I do hope you don't say that to all the lads. Especially not in bars at weekends. I did that once. I shan't be doing it again. I had to get the Swarfega out.
The one week challenge is a simple game to see if you can write a specific script in a week's time. It starts when the genre and theme are announced. You write a script, no more than fifteen pages, and submit it within that week.
A lot of good scripts have been written through this.
Sandra!! What do you mean you won't be participating? C'mon now!!!
No family friendly anything! Straight up, pull no punches HORROR!!!!!
This could be the ONE!!!!!!
I absolutely recommend the OWC's, but I don't have the time right now. I've been reading George's book and I know that I can help him with it; so if he chooses to make changes I will have a supply of notes and recommendations.
The problems I've uncovered are not regarding the story itself. That I love. I won't go into detail here, but they are just that-- details. Forever details right?
Anyways, besides that I'm continuing on with Thief. It's drawn me into its world and I need to bring my skill up to the level I know it can be. For that, I need time and I can't be everywhere at once.
I'll be present and watching the OWC unfold.
I want to recommend a movie I watched the other night. Six Guns written by Geoff Meed. It's something not done too often these days. Old time Western. It goes to show you what can be done on a budget.
Although I saw what was coming, it still kept me watching. The acting of Sage Mears could have been stronger, but I think she's young and will get better with time.
Oh, and RV, RE the Matrix. I absolutely love all of the Matrix movies. I can watch them over and over again. I often try and ask myself, what is it that makes me love a particular movie, and I have trouble answering that.
It's not the genre. I think it's the blend between what everyone brings in the development. The writers, the creative developers we don't see that work behind the scenes in costume etc... the director and most definitely the actors. I think that good actors can make dull films extraordinary and bad actors can make good films pretty dull.
There was nothing bad about our posts. The author never even chimed in, did he? I just don't understand why people submit scripts and then don't respond to feedback. It's bizarre, actually!
Since there's no better place to ask... Why were mine, Jeff's, and Phil's comments deleted from "Fear County"??? I know the guilty mod is lurking....
I didn't think they were that bad.
While I do not particularly care for the image of myself "lurking about" -- no, James, the posts where not that bad -- though Jeff might have gotten a little worked up.
It was basically another "we see"-fest starting to brew, and given the author's response to the initial post from jackx on the thread:
That, and I read a bit beyond page one -- and deemed the charges unjustified after that opening scene. Not the greatest, but it certainly does not suck, either.
As usual, blanket apologies for those who may take offense. Sometimes it is hard to judge when merely trying to keep things tidy.
So we have one person, Dressel, interested in a Script Club. I can do that if you tell me what kind of script you'd like to discuss. All I have to finish is a few shorts for MP and a feature, Young Love. After that I have no reading planned. Should be done by tomorrow or Saturday.
Looking forward to the OWC...would also like to do another 6WC as I do better under pressure.

I'd really like to discuss Joss Whedon's much talked about script Cabin in the Woods; an incredibly top-secret project that apparently will revolutionize horror.

I'd be up for that. Love horror. Anyone else? When would you like to start?
Okay, so even if it's just us three, you want me to go ahead and start one?
Usually we start with a locked thread and give everyone a week to read before we open up for discussion. Does that sound good?
Sounds good to me. I'm sure more people will join up. It's going to be one hell of a discussion. If anyone needs the script, let me know, and I'll send it your way.

The Matrix. God amongst movies.
Noh dean.
Now. Tis quiet. Too quiet. Maybe sometings gonna happen. And maybe not.
Hope you're alright Elstree. Theif/? Wat's dat den?
I've noticed that it's been getting more quiet for a while now...
I think we've reached a bit of a watershed moment actually.
I think what's kind of happened (and I may be totally wrong here) is that the main core of the site...the regulars...have grown to a certain level, which I'd call Pre-Pro (basically the only thing separating them from professional level is their first Greenlight on a project).
In other words, there isn't that much to talk about. Something like the Breaking the Rules thread wouldn't happen now because we've all kind of reached a consensus on what we believe and wouldn't bother getting involved in an immense debate about it.
There was another thread on here a while ago about what your plans for the future were that turned into an interesting debate...on there I said we should perhaps look at ways to increase the productivity of the site for those that are looking to forge a career....I basically think that's where we are, we should look at ways of using the board for more professional ends. By that I don't mean that the board itself needs to change in any way...but we should find mutually beneficial ways of working together.
Kidding - I think it's the fact that the regulars aren't writing much any more. Phil and jwent have put up some new stuff, as have I (*cough*cough*), and Brian's got a new feature up now. But apart from that I don't see the shorts or the features for that matter coming in from the regulars with, well, regularity...
I think we all get bogged down in reading the latest short, or tearing into the first 10 pages of a feature from a non-regular to tell them just how many places they went wrong, instead of finding work, perhaps buried work, from the regulars...
I do see some OWCs getting bumped, so that's a good thing.

Michael Cornetto has been working on this for a long time now: BENEFICIAL WAYS OF WORKING TOGETHER.
Not long ago, he tried to arrange a new "Killer" game, but people are trying to juggle their lives. Their careers, their family, their school... You know.
Anyways, many of us are working hard in the background.
I'm really digging in my heels with Thief, but I can't lose Logan Heisberg; thus, I'm going to attempt to write two new intros. One with him O.S. and one with him only mentioned in conversation.
The characters are driving me wild because I feel like they're interfering.
Anyways, I'm back from a cadet exercise today and I'm going to take an actual day off from this insanity tomorrow. As the kids did their Bravo-bravo, I was doing, "How can I amp up this scene?" Study, write, read... It's Saturday, right?
We're all here. Some of us are probably over thinking everything. Hell... lo?
I'm looking forward to the Scriptclub because that, I can manage right now. Developing another short, I cannot in my current head-space. I have too much to revisit. Too much new material that taunts me forward.
I don't think people have moved on...I think they're busy with their own projects and those projects probably don't necessarily involve posting status on the Simply Scripts boards.
I think if you have a script club that will bring some life back. There were lots of social events here for a number of months and there isn't right now. I would gladly have hosted another event but I don't have the time atm - someone else has to do it while I get my schedule back under control.

I think Rick might actually be close to what's going on. People come here to learn, get to a certain level and then move on...
I'm still here though. Does that mean I'm stuck?...
You're not stuck. People that are here are here because they want to be here.
If we do something wonderful now or five years from now... yes, even ten or more years from now... I think we'll still be here and we'll find it very fulfilling. Family is family.

I think the only ones who actually leave the boards leave because they've given up on screenwriting. Others just leave for a little bit and come back. This happens regularly. Enjoy the calm before the storm.
I don't think people "graduate from this site." As Phill mentioned I think most just give up. Or come into something new in their lives where as writing becomes insignificant.
I can tell you, any script I ever write will be posted here first, good or bad. I'm just loyal. Even if I stop writintg i'll still pop in now and again to read some.
Still luv to see someone on this site make it big.... Then they could cough up the dough to produce our scripts... Or never show their faces here again. Tend to believe the latter.
Now then. I see cynicasm, no, clincialism, nah, err, the cynic in you is alive and well. And that's fine. I have a healthy dose of cynicism just after me tea in the morning. It keeps me keen. And me like beang keen.
Personally I tend to save it for companies. Especially plcs. They're easy to predict. Profit rules their world. Nothing else.
Individuals however, are not easy to predict. At least that's true for ones outside your immediate circle. They've got all sorts of strange and unpredicable motives. And circumstances.
I'd say no one is getting paid to be here. The door seems always open. We can come and go as we please.
Altruism is alive and well. There's just not enough of it about. If they could swap all that hate and viciousness out there for the other this big ball of rock would be rolling far more happily for all. Alas. They can't. Or won't.
Morrisey memorably once sang "We hate it when our friends become successful."
You could change the word "friends" for whatever suits best.
I wish whoever the best. Hey, it's only the movies. Nobody's gonna change the world with a film. Spielberg, Scorcese, Hell even Kubrick weren't half as influential as the likes of Lennon, Bowie and Dylan were once. Not in my head anyway.
But what they might do is make a few think. And that's a pretty damn fine thing to do.
And yes. They could come back and make some Simply scripts. The best ones. If they were worth it I'm sure they'd consider it.
If you guys want to start discussing the script, it's fine with me. I have another feature to finish up first, but that's ok.
I think we could try to do the discussion a little differently this time since sometimes the discussion dies down quickly. Instead of trying to discuss one thing at the time we could just open the floodgates and see what happens.

Do yourselves a favor, guys...check out the new Avantasia...cream of the crop in terms of music. Absolutely killer stuff (no time to look for a vid, and I doubt they've got one yet, as the US release is still months away for disc 1 - but ofcourse, I've had the exclusive double Digi for a few weeks already).
Nice one Snipe. Good tune. I liked it. But then I would do, wouldn't I?
Here's a coupla bits for ya.
Still a hell of a song, despite Townshend almost managing to destroy thirty years of great rock n fecking roll in a coupla clicks... The Ahrsehead.
Note the 'power slide' at 7.52. And the lasers. Shame he wouldn't let Moore use it for Fareandright 911. Still, Young was nearly as good. Ahme. Now then -
Just to comment on some of what I've read, I haven't moved on, and even if I did manage to reach pro status, I wouldn't really leave. No reason to. True, I haven't posted a feature in a little while, but I've been concentrating on novelizing what I have. I've gotten a couple of ideas here and there, and I want to write one down just so I have something to post again. I know that my biggest problem has been time and other projects. Beyond the novels, I am working on producing something else as well as recording a musical I wrote years ago and playing in a band that just might gig here in a couple months (we practice on Friday nights which is why I am not on Skype). Throw family on top of that, and you end up with a very full schedule. I'm a regular lurker though, and you'll see my name pop up on the people online fairly often. I haven't left yet. Don't intend to. If I get a wild hair, I may actually finish one of my half-finished features...just to mix things up.
Just a reminder that we'll be starting another One Week Challenge this Friday.
For those of you not in the know, this is a little game we play a few times a year to see. In it, a genre and theme is selected and you have one week to write a script (15 pages maximum), based on said genre and theme. The idea of this is to see if you can write something under pressure. Imagine if a filmmaker asked you to write something....
Do not put your name on the title page. For the first week that the scripts are posted, no names will be posted. The anonimity is all part of the fun as we try to guess who wrote what.

'tsokay George, George Willson with two "L"s. I know your voice. I'm working on notes for Fempiror. Hopefully I can contribute to your rising talent.
Like you, I'm short on time. To further complicate the matter, I have a tendency to enter realms I have no business in yet. Should really get one of those shmancy eye readers. That'll give me clearance.
Since this thread titled "It's Very Quiet Here..." has evoked 101 responses it proves, if anything, that the site is still (thankfully) alive and kicking.

I watched some yesterday. Whilst the britts we're pounding down tea and crumpits(hardly) I sat at a lothargic bar full of patrons who could care less about "Soccer". I did enjoy the cheap goal we got. Twas the highlight for me.
I think we could use a new dump of scripts. I gotta real little stinker in the hopper.
I'm trying. Every now and then, someone will actually engage in a constructive back and forth even, but usually, it's a "thanks, I disagree, don't post anything else on my thread or I'll have it deleted". And then, they do have it deleted, and their thread dies.
We miss you, Pia. I hope things are OK with that situation you mentioned awhile back.
Thanks Jeff! It's not a secret. We had it on the business website even with links to the newspaper. We were closed for a month!! Luckily we opened up this week again and were super busy as if nothing had happened. Weird!
Finders Keepers will be postponed until fall since there was just no way I could organize that after the accident and shooting in the woods in Florida in the summer is out of the question. I will work on the script meanwhile, trying to get it better. I just sent in a rewrite to scriptreaders again. The comments were not as good this time so I'm worrying that I've rewritten it to shit to be honest.
Going to read a script now. A reread which I seldom do.
Here's something I have a question on Jeff. I could post this under its own topic, but since this is kind of a show about nothing, I'll post here.
topic: regional dialect or slang.
Someone from another site sent me some of his scenes. He's a new writer, but fairly good at doing things like English slang, or black inner city dialogue. What I would worry about is being just a little off on something like that. For example, I am from Massachusetts, and there's been a lot of movies filmed here recently that try to capture the "Boston accent". The dialogue will be moving along very accurately, then something will really stick out as fake. Now it's not a big deal since only locals will sense this. But for something like inner city slang, or London slang, if you get one line wrong, a lot of people are going to know, and to me it will sink the script.
So I try to avoid sounding too "genuine". Of course, it's also not something I have an aptitude for either. I am curious what your approach is.
In a similar light, what efforts do you make to try to make a dialogue sound regional, and how important is it. For example, sometimes a simple sentence will look the same on paper, be the same words, but will be said different in London, Birmingham, or Brooklyn. But I think sometimes people really push in their writing to get that dialect sound, when in reality all you really need is the actor to say it with the right accent.
Just making conversation. Mods can delete this or move it they want, not going to ruin my day.
Well, Kev, I think there are 2 schools of thought relating to slang/accents/etc. in dialogue, and both are adamant about their thoughts.
Either use it or don't use it.
Used poorly or incorrectly, it will sound stupid.
Not used at all, it will sound unrealistic.
I say always include whatever regional things need to be there, as I strive for reality and detail. I research whatever it is, including dialect (but to be honest, I've traveled all over the country to the point, where I have a decent understanding already, and I'm familiar with enough movies where I can make a call in that it either sounds good or it sounds bad, and from there, I can fashion my own.
But I'm also a believer in write what you know and stay away from what you don't. I wouldn't attempt to write modern British characters, cause I really don't know how they speak or certain slangs they use.
I don't think it's all that quiet, but maybe it is for features. Shorts seem to be popping up (and getting read) quite frequently, but I don't see a lot of features being exchanged (from regular members). I feel like most of the time it's from people who never visit the site.
It seems like a couple years ago (maybe even just a year) everyone was trying to push a feature they had written.
I got one coming Matthew. I actually sent it to Don then withdrew it before it posted. But I'm gonna send soon. If no one likes it, well, then that's the way it is. At least I'll hopefully get something useful out of it.

Look forward to reading it. I was going to check out your other script on here, but it looks like you didn't really want people reading that one.
Tap? Actually, I just sent Don a rewrite today. When it posts, I'd be thrilled to have you glance at it. That was my first script ever posted. I've learned a lot since then, so I managed to get rid of most of the format errors in the rewrite. The rewrite has flaws still, no doubt, but it's light years better. I'll let you know when it's up.
Lol. I thought 'Scottish Lullaby' was the only thing you had posted on SS, or I would've read 'Tap' already. I'm going to download it to my laptop now, so I'll be able to go back and read both versions when the new one gets posted.
I had suggested to Screen that instead of quoting from the bible in posts, if he wants to influence people with an idea, why not try scripts. And then for a couple weeks he tried that, sent in a bunch of shorts with something related to his message. Then he disappeared. Hopefully he's just working on something.
I'm not religious myself, but I respect a good story. The ones he sent were a little over the top IMO, but some people liked them. He's probably going to come back with a vengeance!
Wo...damn, Rob. That's what Stevie and I would call a cheat, or an illegal misquote. Those words and/or letters were not available in my quote to alter like that.
Pretty brutally graphic as well. I doubt this will remain for long and I don't think it should, either.

Bert's script "The Farm" has a angry toy bear in it.

we had a relative visit this past weekend. He's 83, he told us that my husband's grandmother's brother was Tonto from Lone Ranger and their parents were a Mohawk chief and a Seneca princess. Of course back in those days, being Native American was not something you bragged about. You hid it. Anyway, we knew my husband was 1/4 native american, but we did not know that he and his brother and the kids qualify to get Iroquois Nation passports. This spurred renewed interest in their Indian heritage and they started joking around with Indian names...they called me Angry Bear. I mentioned it on FB yesterday. That's how bert knows.
