Can't start reading just yet but I noticed people take issue with God Does Not Play Dice. I addressed this fairly late in the challenge so people may have missed it:

Quoted from MarkItZero
Yes, you cannot swap the requirements.

If you pick the first group, you must have a retirement home and a jump rope.

If you pick the second group, you must have a church and dice.

Assuming you have those required elements for that group, you can have any other locations and objects in the world in addition to those.

Quoted from Dustin
So you can have all four if you'd like to, or even three... so long as two of them are from one group.

Quoted from MarkItZero
correct

May not have been the brightest idea allowing it, but I did say it was allowed.

People seem to be really divided with this challenge. I still have about 5 scripts to read, I think, but there doesn’t really seem to be a standout so far. That’s not to say there aren’t good scripts.

I know people obviously have varying opinions but from the OWC's I've done there have always been a few real standouts from the start that the majority agree on.

I'll agree with Hawkeye here... I like quickies. Did I pull it off... no .. hell no, but it's a good challenge to be able to craft a story that fits into any length. Any challenge that makes you work and think is a good challenge.

I have read my lot tonight... I'll finish up tomorrow at work (sneak time).

I've enjoyed several stories. None have been shockingly GREAT yet for me. But I've liked several.

I finished them all too. There are a couple standouts so far and a couple that really need explanation. Great efforts were made by most to fit so much in only three pages. Congratulations.

Just an observation, but why are people complaining about no cover page? This is supposed to be anonymous, so what does the cover page do? Give you a bogus written by and a copy right symbol?

I for one do not miss the bogus cover pages.

I don't care about page numbers, title pages, or any of that silly stuff. I've also seen Tyler complaining in a few threads that people haven't used the full 3 pages.

Lots of great writing on show this time with some of them being not so hot on story, but we can't hit it every time. Conversely, some written not so well, but have the bones of something good.

Through them all now. Man I love several quickies in quick succession!

From a story aspect there was very little in the way of thinking outside the box. In fact it was only the last one I read which really impressed me in that fashion. A lot followed predictable associations with the locations/objects such a the devil, pervy priests and old folks hanging themselves.

On the plus side, writing a three page script is a tough challenge and most managed to do so admirably. Some very capable writing skills on display here. Well done to all who entered, it's difficult trying to come up with a story in such a limited time frame.

I do echo what has previously been said, there was no requirement to do exactly three pages just not over 3 pages so those who did 2.5 should not be disqualified. Similarly if you mixed both locations/objects that was also allowed but personally I steered away from that.

Looking forward to the reveal and really itching to answer some of the points raised on my script!!

-Mark

Love the Quickie Challenge. Really forces writers to focus. Plus, reading and commenting isn't as daunting as the OWC.

I read all of these Monday but saved most of my commenting until today after a fresh look at each one.

When the challenge clearly states 3 pages, I would expect 3 pages and no less. Any less than that is laziness and people who "don't care" about rules are wannabe know it alls

I don't have the rules in front of me, but I believe it said a "maximum" of three pages.

Yeah, it's a maximum of three pages. If anything, I've seen scripts here where people try to fit way too much within three pages, and some suffer because of it (mine included). On the other hand, there are some folks who can fit a well rounded story onto one or two pages and it reads great. It's not easy, but some are really good at it.

I loved the challenge. I read them all in one day and there were quite a few I enjoyed.
Perhaps a quality 3-pager is hard to write, I won't know. They are easier to read - that's for sure. And there are a lot of reads on each in such a short time - I like that too. Lots to like about this challenge.

Quoted from Warren

Finished. I'm impressed with what people pulled off. 3 pagers are hard to write in general. At least, I think so. Then tack on very specific requirements and it's gonna get downright brutal.

You all acquitted yourselves admirably. I'm always impressed with the creativity and talent around here.

Reading seemed less stressful too. I think I only got grumpy on a couple so only a few people will hate me.

This will stand forever as the record holder for most old people hung to death in a single challenge.

Yup, right there with you. I didn't get all stressed out trying to read them all and was actually able to spend more thought in the comments (albeit some smart-ass comments).

Thanks for coming up with the quickie challenge. It REALLY made me work at cutting out the fat.

I like the shorties better too. One reason MP was so successful. Perfect length for writing a short and reading.

I still have a few to go, but will handle those over the next couple of days.

I'm happy to say that I was really impressed with the writing on display here.

There was only one I didn't review, but it's a quirk with me.

My husband knows: If he puts on those kind of Hollywoody movies --

I'm OUTTA THE ROOM

I might have missed a good script though.

It's just, with me: I hate, absolutely detest:

Alarm clocks ringing at the beginning of scripts.

Stupid flakey girls with big boobs running around in scripts.

Idiot stories that can only get any attention because of sexual content...

Ok, said 'nough. But that's the idea.

I hate reading shit!

So, I applaud all the writers in this challenge because I didn't get that feeling and was able to read and with good vibes goin' on.

Sandra

Looking at the original post, voting is only going to happen August 27th. I'll be coming back from a trip with the family that day so hopefully I can get my vote in. If the polling stations open a bit early I'd be up for that!

This was a good challenge. Four scripts rose above the rest for me. They were Eeny Meeny, Holy Roller, Too Short and The Numbers of The Beast. I liked them all for different reasons, but Eeny Meeny and TNOTB had particular visuals that really stood out - EM, the wife tapping her watch at the very end and TNOTB, the priest rolling the dice in his hand. Good, visual storytelling that said a lot with just a line or two.

Nice work, all. Fun challenge.

I meant the 27th is the last day to get votes in, not the only day. I should have worded that differently. Usually, Don sends out the voting a few days before whatever the deadline is. At least, I seem to recall that's how it works.

Thanks all.

No I just did what I normally do with a new scripts, check reddit and Craigslist for anything that might fit and send it to all the producers I've met over the last 12 months, mainly from other projects that have been taken from SS.

Sometimes you get a bite.

Congratulations Warren! Didn't that happen last OWC too?

Someone contacted me yesterday about The Riding Hoods Creed. That was a OWC script too, but a long time ago. Maybe even three years. I can't remember. Filmmakers are definitely scrounging the scripts at SS.

Dena and I are also in pre-pro on Coulrophobia. Another OWC script. I think that was the elevator one. We're having an elevator prop built even.

Since I've been here since the beginning of time, seems like, I can definitely say that overall, the OWC scripts have definitely improved in quality.

It does amaze me (in a nice way) how old scripts get picked up. I always thought the interest would come shortly after they are posted but it can be years down the line so you never know.

I'm really pleased with the feedback on mine and have had some excellent suggestions so after the challenge, I'll do another draft and then see if I can get this produced. May even produce it myself if no-one bites.

I had a short from a one week challenge a little while back, "Roadside Attraction," filmed in LA last year. Starred Dee Wallace ("ET", "Cujo").  Got renamed "Country Road 12".  Was screened at the Atlanta Underground Film Festival last week, and has also been accepted by the Burbank International Film Festival and the Chicago HorrorFest.

So Pia's right. Producers are definitely looking at these challenges as a way of finding scripts, so writers should definitely be putting their best efforts into these!

Gary

Some of my scripts:

Bounty (TV Pilot) -- Top 1% of discoverable screenplays on Coverfly
I'll Be Seeing You (short) - OWC winner
The Gambler (short) - OWC winner
Skip (short) - filmed
Country Road 12 (short) - filmed
The Family Man (short) - filmed
The Journeyers (feature) - optioned

Hi Pia,

I wasn't in the last OWC, but I do have a current option on Ugly Beautiful which was an OWC script from a few challenges ago. It was picked up by a Turkish producer. That does seem like one of those options that just fades to nothing though.

Mark, after your comments I'm almost 100% sure what you wrote

Works the same way with features, I had one picked up from here recently that was listed in 2015. I can't say much more about it at the present time, unfortunately. So it's worth keeping those features coming too.

Nice, Warren! I was hoping some options would come out of this.

Anyone have guesses on who wrote what?

I have Dustin down for Numbers of the Beast. His writing style, plus he said his story would have testicle dice. This one had a reference to those balls. Baoding balls.

I agree with Dan for This is Satan.

Dustin's is too obvious. I can't tell because I'm thinking it's a correct guess.

I thought Sunset View was Dave's, but Dave is not in.

God Does Not Play Dice - James

I'm pleased with the comments and suggestion on mine too. I'll do another draft, should be easy.

Dan wrote the dungeons and dragons one. Tyler wrote I am Satan. I don't know the others. Oh, Dena wrote the Jesus note story.

The android could be any one of a number of quality writers here. I was thinking perhaps Rick (Scar Tissue Films), or Steven Miles.

I know who wrote G.O.A.T. - this one is obvious for several reasons, too.

And someone did not leave a comment for We Got an A! Hmm. The author, I know you!

But I hope someone remembers that list in case I do get them all right.

Just got the voting form.

I feel like I remember people voting on their own scripts last OWC. Can anyone clarify what the go is for this challenge? If everyone votes for their own it essentially cancels out but if some do and some don't it can potentially affect the result.

Well, if I am in charge of deciding that... I would rather people not vote on their own script.

I don't think it should count.

Warren, congrats !!  I am very happy for you.  You've written some solid things here!!

Can I ask you or anyone how you go about trying to sell something??  How do you know where to go or trust?  How do you know when something is ready to be sold??

I know my writings have been pretty aweful, so a major rewrite or 3 might be needed, but at some point I'd like to try my hand at selling.

I admit that I'm scared.  And I have no clue where to start.

Lastly, for this event, I'm really pissed at myself for my choice.  It was stated that speaking heavy scripts wouldn't be successful, so what do I come up with?  A speaking heavy script.  I mean, how stupid am I???

This is like the fourth script in a row that my script was doomed to fail before I even began because of the choices I made before I started writing.  If I am gonna get anywhere, I need to stop shooting myself in the foot, unless the script calls for it, of course.

How do you guys stop these sorts of mistakes in judgement in concept stage before you type the first word??  How do you tell if an idea simply isn't doable within the constrictions listed for each event??  I need to develop this skill quickly if I am to have any success anywhere.

Right now, I'm very discouraged, and my damned pain level has skyrocketed again.

If anyone wants to message me with your thoughts, feel free.

Dan

Please read my scripts:
http://www.simplyscripts.net/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?b-series/m-1427564706/

I'm interested in reading animation, horror, sci fy, suspense, fantasy, and anything that is good.  I enjoy writing the same.  Looking to team with anyone!

Thanks
Dan

You're putting yourself under a lot of pressure, Dan. And I remember your end of the world script, it was pretty good.

Numbers by Matias Caruso is a dialog heavy script. Black Rose Garden (an absolute favorite of mine) has lots of dialog too. On the other hand they had some powerful visuals too. Just saying) I don't know the formula here. I like lots of dialog in mine but people keep complaining. So what... I'll get better.

Thanks, Dan, that's nice of you to say.

First of all, I've never sold anything. I am purely a hobbyist writer with no aspirations of leaving my day job. So I am more than happy to part with my scripts for nothing other than the written by credit. The satisfaction of seeing something come to life is payment enough.

Of course, if anyone was ever interested in one of my features that would be a different story, that's a lot of work to part with for nothing.

I'd be asking the more seasoned writers that actually get paid that question. Anthony, Pia, Dustin, etc.

As far as knowing who to trust, who the hell knows. It's helpful if a filmmaker has a showreel with previous work and I guess actual payment is a good place to start.

I've had a few shorts made now so I have a little network of filmmakers, actors, composers and the like that I bounce ideas off and share new work with.

As far as knowing when something is ready, I don't think the writer will ever feel that it's completely ready. I personally don't know when to stop, but once something has been picked up then I let it rest. Until then I'm always on Reddit or Craigslist looking for a good fit.

Your last point is hard for me to answer because I personally just write for the most part. For this challenge, I didn't plot anything out, I just wrote and hoped like hell it fit into 3 pages, and it did, almost perfectly.

Sometimes I do plan it all out, but mostly I just get going and see where it leads. Again probably something the long time writers would have a better answer to.

I'm interested to know what you wrote now.

Sorry, I don't think I've been helpful in any way.

Re voting - I've never voted on my own script but I know some folk have. Personally I don't think it should be allowed.

Cyborn can't be mine as I reviewed it. I've got James down for this one.

Dan - Some dialogue scenes and stories are the greatest ever. I personally love dialogue and wish it was used more creatively like in Tarantino movies, TV shows like True Detective, Doctor Who etc.  I always say a good writer can write an entire movie of two people sat in a room talking and have you glued the entire time.

The problem is some folk see a script with a lot of dialogue and just go, "Bah, talking heads!" discard it and don't give it a chance. Write what you want to write and stop worrying about what everyone else thinks or how you are going to sell it. Be true to yourself first, practice and just get better over time.

About dialogue heavy scripts. I love it too, however, there's a HUGE difference between boring chatter and good dialogue. Since QT is rather good at this, let's use him as an example. The beginning of Inglorious Bastards has probably one of the best dialogue scenes ever made. Think about it, near twenty minutes of just dialogue. But, and this is everything, it is intelligent, purposeful, suspenseful and there's a LOT of stuff going on. That is NOT a talking head scene. Same for True Detective, since it was mentioned. The dialogue is intelligent, intriguing, thought provoking etcetera. It keeps us glued to the screen. A talking heads scene is just people talking with absolutely nothing of importance or interest to say or further the story.

One of my biggest pet peeves is watching people write dialogue heavy scripts because QT does it. Ok fine, but if that's what you're going to do, it better be really really good. Most writers are not QT...

I'm not that smart and I write crappy dialogue I've been told, so I try to keep it to a minimum. I'm also not good at the prose type stuff, so I keep that lean and to a bare minimum too. Figure out what your strengths are and use that. Figure out what your weaknesses are and keep that to a minimum or even avoid it if you can.

As far as selling scripts go, all I do is post them here at SS. Sometimes I'll put a feature on InkTip. I have never tried to actively go out and find people. Never even once sent out a queery. I wouldn't even know how to. Like Warren, I'm just a hobbyist. I'm not looking for a career. Maybe if I was younger, but at this stage in my life, it's just a hobby and will remain that way.

Because they know the criteria and have a head start on thinking of a story. Maybe they can enter but surely not be the writer's choice for that reason?

But I don't know, only James can answer that question for this specific challenge.

I assumed I couldn't enter. Not sure I would have even if I could. I can't seem to bring myself to write shorts now that I'm trying to power through this new feature. It stresses me out horribly to work on anything else for some weird reason. I gotta finish this draft first. And I write slow as hell so I'm only just past the midpoint.

I meant what I said about it being a tough challenge. Don't be too hard on yourself. I'm sure peeps can offer more once scripts are revealed.

And sorry about the pain. No solution for that, but stay strong!

Dan, I know which one is yours by the subject matter alone...and I knew it instantly, as I knew your last OWC entry a well.  The subject matter you choose is a dead giveaway.

In terms of choosing a topic/story/plot, you need to map it out in your head to see if it's going to fit the page length parameters.  If it's too big a concept, it ain't gonna work.  Keep it simple and contained until you get to be a stronger writer.

In terms of selling scripts?  If I were you, I wouldn't even think about it, and I'm not saying that because you're unable to sell a script.  Most peeps who sell shorts are not pocketing enough moola for it to even matter.

Write because you enjoy it.  Write to get better.  Write to make other peeps happy or entertained.

I think if you take this stuff too seriously you are bound to be let down. I do not get excited when someone even options a script. Heck, I optioned Dead Cell this week and got a contract for a 'story by' credit with money this week but I didn't go post it anywhere because it's just little stuff. This is a hobby for me. I do not have time to put into it and I"m past the 50 so writing is just for fun for me now. If I get movies made then it's kudos. If I make some money... kudos again. But I'm not getting rich. And almost all my scripts have been found here.. including the two that happened this week.

Enjoy what you do. If you do not love writing, take up something else. Do not ever expect to become some famous screenwriter but work hard and if you do... then kudos.

Now the one who wrote Cyborn.... That short is so good ... you could possibly get a sell off the concept! Dying to know who wrote it ... I suspect ...but not saying until the reveal.

Now, I'm glad I don't write stuff that could sell off a concept.
I mean, If I was the author of Cyborn I wouldn't expect anyone come up to me and ask for it. I imagine they would just take it and write their own.

I remember one MoviePoet guy had a script posted there about accessing human's mind through dreams when searching for a killer (don't remember it well but it was a lot like inception). Inception came out in several years. The Moviepoet guy didn't say it was like his scirpt not even once. I don't think Nolan read his short either. But if it was my short wouldn't I have thoughts? Big ugly thoughts...

No, I'm glad I don't have that sort of stuff. I sleep well. (and eat well)

One Russian guy lately started working for an animation producer and wrote three scripts for him. The producer didn't credit him and is now searching for different screenwriters. Said he doesn't have to credit him as he (the producer) and his wife changes a lot about the script.
The screenwriter got about $20 for the script, didn't sign any docs. They say he forfeited the rights when he received the money - the fellow screenwriters told him that and in great volumes.

Life of a real scriptwriter. Meh.

Don't be a screenwriter if you:

1. Have thin skin.
2. Can't learn from your mistakes.
3. Can't work well with others.
4. Can't edit well.
5. Believe your **** doesn't stink.
6. Don't love what you're doing.

Finished all. My winner is Cyborn! The writer thought outside the box and did it an a great admirable way. I agree with Dena, GREAT idea for a feature! I wouldn't worry about stealing though. A three page short is not much more than a logline which are no more than an idea and ideas are a dime a dozen.

I'm going to vote now. Cyborn...you got my vote!

I marked 3 or 4 scripts as excellent, Cyborn was one of them.

I guess I'm a tough judge.

I did not mark any of the scripts in this challenge as Excellent.

However, Cyborn (even though it's not my kind of thing) got one of the highest ratings.

The one that sticks with me as memorable and just a personal favourite of mine is:

Da-de-da-da-de-DAH!!!! :::::

ICE CREAM SODA!

Your images were strong. You did something really right for me in terms of story.

I think you made magic.

Sandra

Cyborn gets my vote! I marked three as excellent. But this one blew all others out of the water IMO.

Since I didn't enter, I didn't get to vote, but I will let y'all know my thoughts...

On a Zero to Five star scale, I handed out 1 ****, 1 *** 1/2, and 4 ***.

The **** went to A More Perfect Union, which was the best script here

My top marks (two Very Goods) went to Cyborn and G.O.A.T. I thought the latter was the best script of the bunch, but I'm also a sucker for sci-fi...

I'm right there with you, Jeff. I can't wait to hear from the 'A More Perfect Union' writer for insight to their vision. I don't know why, but it tied with Cyborn for the best, for totally different reasons.

Great work, writers!

Mine are Ice-Cream Soda, Dance Away, Lover, Sunset View and Eenie Meenie. But I downgraded all four to very good for all sorts of reasons.

On A Pair Of Dice was my favorite by far, the only excellent score from me, although there were a few awarded a Very Good.

There's few traffic at the moment. Whatever, my second favorite was Skip, don't know, was a touching script.

Btw I also think Mark wrote Cyborn

RE-POSTING HERE SO NO ONE MISSES IT

I'm gonna do a front page blog post with some mini-reviews of top scripts. I see Mark already has one up but I'll still do one for him.

So, if your script was "Writer's Choice" or "Writer's Also liked" shoot me a PM if you want yours included. And let me know if you have a website link you want included, or any other information you want people to see.

@Dan

Try shorts, Dan. Start with a simple story you can sum up in 1 sentence and just let it unfold in a couple of pages. Scrap any side plots and focus on your 1-sentence story, keep it clean.

You'll have a much easier time getting those done by anyone and you can make contacts that way which will bring new opportunities.

My first short was found here via STS by a producer from New Mexico. He turned it into a film and the film was accepted as the Las Cruces International Film Festival. I was invited there as the writer and was able to make invaluable contacts.

A second short was optioned like 2 months ago through Script Revolution, shooting starts at Oct. 5th. And we're currently in pre-production for the first feature, the guy who directed the first short is going to direct that one in a low budget range and I'm co-producing.

At some point you'll just have to get your scripts out into the world, I think I've given you that advice some years ago already. If you're too scared to show your work to anyone who could do something with it, it's not going to happen. Don't worry about black lists either, it's a fairy tale. You can't get anything worse than a pass and even that doesn't mean your work is crap, the next one who reads it could like it and pick it up - it's all a matter of taste, there's no 'right' or 'wrong' in a creative task, writing isn't math.
