Welcome to Soulshadows - Series Two

The authors for this series will be (in order):

Shelton
Higgonator
Wesleys Gone Wild
Me
Itmightbeorange
Stebrown
Jayrex
Mcornetto
Dreamscale
Steven8
Theboywhocouldfly
Mr. Ripley
Bert

I hope I included everyone.

What you have to do if you are an author:

  • If you handed in a synopsis then write the script based on your synopsis and also send me an email or pm with your item to verify I have the right one.
  • If you didn't hand in a synopsis then just send me an email or pm with your item - so I can make sure we aren't using the same items.
  • You might also search the web for an image of your item and send it to me too.

The story must:

  • Showcase an item.
  • Have at least one death near the item and imply that a soul has been transferred into the item. (The death should be your protagonist but it doesn't have to be).
  • It must have supernatural themes.

Your story can be any genre.
Your script must not include the Tanis narration.  That will be written for you.
Your title should be Soulshadows II: (your title)

You should write your script as soon as you can.  Utilize the writers in this group to ensure the quality of your script - then send it to bert who will write the narration.  Once bert is done with your script (and don't bug him about it because he is a busy man) then he will send it back to you.  Make whatever changes are needed then send the pdf script to me without a title page.   Let me know the title of the script and the item and I will send back a script with a standard Soulshadows cover page.

Once that is done, you may post the script when it is your turn to post.  You will post like you normally post an unproduced script but you will let Don know it part of the Soulshadows II series. The scripts go up periodically rather than all at the same time. Who posts when will be decided soon.   Please let me know in this thread if you have any preferences as to when you want to post your script (early, middle, late).  Also let me know if you have any questions.

Michael

The thread looks nice.  The top post is well organized and easy to understand.

Unfortunately, since it is easy to understand, I now have to trash my script and start again, since the main attractant for me was writing the Tanis narration, and I interwove the whole beginning of my script into it.

Nicely done Michael. I'm planning mine out this week while I'm off work...and it's sunny, in England!

Have you been able to talk Bert into writing an episode? I remember you saying you tried last time around.

I imagine bert will be busy writing all the Tanis parts which seem to be a lot since there apparently are 13 or so episodes. That means he also have to read over 250 pages...

200 pages over several months, the series is likely to run for at least 4 months if not more considering the number of episode.  We'll all be reading those pages too.  If bert has suggestions on how we can make this easier for him then he should chime in.  I'm sure any number of us would be willing to help.  This isn't meant to be a drag for anyone involved - it's meant to be fun.

I quite liked your idea for your episode, Steve, and you do not need to trash your bits for Tanis if you were really into it.  It pleases me that you enjoy the character, and I do not mind incorporating your thoughts.  Send them on when the time comes.

That goes for anybody who might have some thoughts on Tanis for their own episodes.  Thirteen episodes is alot more than I expected, so fresh ideas are certainly welcome.

Like Cornetto said, it will be spread out over several months.  Weekly output is too demanding for the writers or, frankly, interested readers.  The series stays fresh for longer if we spread things out a bit.  Timeframes are there, but they are loose and casual.

I am kind of half-plotting an episode of my own, Ste -- based on a nice brainstorm by Cornetto -- but will not use it if I am not happy with how it turns out.  It is kind of a departure from the standard format, but it still works.  We'll see.

I'll go up front somewhere. I had the treatment done 2 days ago and have already started the script... once I sit down and get going with the treatment pages it's done.

Mine is just about done, I think, so I can go up front if it helps to buy others time.

This looks great and will defineity be alot of fun.  Great work here guys!

I would prefer to go mid to late.  My concept is complete and I'm beginning to plot the action and structure, but I won't be actually writing anything on it for at least a few weeks.

Looking forward to reading everyone's script here.

PS  I'll be surprised if we actually do have 13 writers...didn't a bunch drop out last season?  The more the merrier!

Page length.

Do I write 30 pages and Bert adds his bit or do I write say 28 pages and Bert tops it up to 30?

I'd say to try and keep on the lower side, with it going to 30 pages after the Tanis part is added.  My script for the first season was 25 pages with the additions, and my current one is 24 pages without it.

If I'm not mistaken most of last series were around 25 pages in length after "Tanis" it's been awhile so I may be wrong.

I should be done a working copy by Friday so if anyone wants to trade before sending them off to Bert just drop me a message.

Move me towards the end.  I came out of the blocks quickly, but I've slowed a bit.  I work nights, and it makes thing a little tough at times.

Thanks Bert.  I'll leave in the Tanis bits!!

If this is going to be spread over a three/four month period, and with me in the middle.  I'd say I'm at the six week/two month mark?

Or do we have to finish as soon as possible?

Currently writing a script at the moment but should be finished by the weekend.  I'll start this next Monday if that's okay?

Yes, and with 13 episodes planned, perhaps even longer.

Curiosity killed the cat.

But in your case, I think I'll just tell you that it will be posted when it's ready to be posted.  I know that the first script is complete and it's likely that it's waiting for Tanis.  And, well, you know how women are (no offense Pia, Orange, or bert ).

I'm a third of the way in.  It's starting to feel more comfortable.  I've never written a script 'because I had to', only because I felt like it.  I'm 'feelin' the pressure to produce'!

It's good for me!  Builds character(s).

I sort of wanted to get the artwork for this underway.  The thing to do is to send me the pic - it might even help with your story - then if you need to change it later, we can talk about it.  Mention in your email that you might change things and I'll leave it till last.

Haven't even started yet...BUT...I have been working on the basic premise.  It's gonna be dark...and brutal...and bloody as shit.

Looking forward to reading all of these.

Hope everyone is working toward putting together a great season of Soul Shadows!

I'm waiting for a return copy with Tanis and trying to decide if I want to use a certain scene at the end or not. The Tanis parts could make the scene redundant as well.

I started one and got part of the way through but it ended up having the feel of a feature so I might save that one for my next feature.

So, I've just started another one.  If I'm not done soon, I may wind up switching with Pia.

But there one thing I wanted to add here. Even though we are passing around these scripts before hand, it would be good if everyone commented on everyone else's Soulshadow thread.  This way everyone gets a good record of their reads and comments.

Cheers all.

I think I need to discuss my idea with someone. I have a clear premise but it keeps falling down when I plan it out. Some fresh perspective would help I think, so could I email someone what the premise is and what ideas I've had so far? There's one major point that doesn't really fit.

I'm kind of stuck at a certain point. Does anyone mind if I send it to them to see if it makes any sense thus far?

No problem, dreamscale. I'll send it to you tomorrow. It's a couple of pages, I want to add a bit more before sending it.

Hey Pia, I thought you were busy and wouldn't be able to write yours for awhile?  I haven't even started yet.  I'm assuming we (I) still have plenty of time.

Hey Cornie, am I right in my thinking, or do I need to get on it?

Let me know.

Looking very forward to all the entries!

Nice job Pia!  Wow...very impressive!  Look forward to reading it. So you obviously found some time you didn't think you were going to have?  I need to get motivated here.  I've got my ideas already, but have yet to write a single word.

I'll get on it this week.

I think I said I was too busy for the OWC, but not the SoulShadows series.

Anyway, anyone who needs a read of their script or input on story idea, feel free to e-mail me.

Tanis has been giving me all kinds of crap about taking so long.  Well, her and a few others haha.

I am sending Shelton his bit tonight -- then it is up to Mike1, Mike2, and Don.

Indeed you do.  A series like this will get more reads when you spread them out a bit.  No worries.

I am under the impression that Higgs is next.  Let me know if that has changed.

Anyway all, there's been an interesting new development.  Not 100% certain but likely that all the scripts will be recorded to audio and placed on the home page when they are posted.  This means a much larger audience for all of you and the series.  I'm not sure how it going to work yet but if this does happen then expect a short delay from the time you submit until the time the script is posted.  I know, I know, more delays.

You will also need to agree to a release for the recording and posting of the recording of your work.  It's very standard stuff for any recording oriented work.  Anyway, I have to rush off because I'm at work.  I'll get the release stuff out to you all very soon.

Cheers,

Michael

How many times do you write to actors/musicians/writers/directors or whatever and tell them you liked their work?

I never do no matter how much I like something so I don't think that means they don't like it. Just be happy that some people out there read or listen to your stuff.

Btw, I just checked and your Better Days episode 5.5 has the most downloads of all of the audiofiles, 3,100 +.  That's pretty darn good!

For who?

You leave comments for unproduced screenplays and that's what the recorded scripts are. It has nothing to do with actors/musicians/writers/directors because they unlike us don't need or care what people think.

It is a good idea but in the long run it proves pointless and that is the problem I have with it.

Michael,

I've found a load of pictures.  How would you like to see them?  Should we use something like photobucket or email them over?  I haven't quite decided on a picture.  If you like one then go with it.

Also, who would like to give my script a read once it's finished?  It's almost completed bar a few scenes.  Once they're done I may fall short.  I may need a couple of ideas to increase it.

Well, I've been looking for a picture of an ornamental dagger with an Eye on the handle.  I had my room mate draw one, even, but it looks pretty...drawn.

You try E-Bay?

Ornamental Dagger, probably not that much trouble.  The added eye detail may make it tougher.  I'll hunt around too.

I saw Mike's old SS thread at the top of the series board and it brought up a good question.

Why aren't the episode numbers in the thread title but are in the script itself? Same with the actual series thread. No episode titles.

I dont know what the timeline for this is but i;m still writing! I dont know if that is good or bad, but yeah that is an update on my entry. I'm still writing, almost done. Sorry.

I'm very happy with the reads I got, but I'm disappointed with the number of reads to some of these other episodes. Board members who are regular contributors here spent a lot of time and effort, not to mention the iScripts as well, on these scripts.

Just mystified about this, I guess...

Me too, Pia.  I mentioned that awhile back on Michael's episode.  I just don't get it.  Almost like they're being purposely ignored for some odd reason.

What's the deal?

Why are we all inclined to bitch-bitch-bitch when others fail to meet our expectations. I suggest we all start bitching about our own faults and disregard the others' as to blame.

I'll start. You know what? I have still to read Tim's script and it's weighing on my mind, but so many things have gotten in the way. It's like that with everyone. We are all pulled in different directions and even when we make a concerted effort, still, things go wrong.

Jeff has completely given up on "Thief" and I understand, but he "promised" when he came on board and "No worries" "Cheers" from Michael, just goes to show you what an amazing man he really is.

I'm a bitch because at the same time as agreeing with him, I also think we need to make a commitment and stick to it for better or for worse. (This condition does NOT apply to Elis because she really has WAY TOO MUCH on her plate.

To be fair, it's my humble opinion, that we label the games for their degree of "seriousness". Kind of like Warcrafters. Some of them are ultra serious and even screen people to become part of their guilds.

Pia's point is solid. We should be paying attention to what's going on and I think for the most part, we are all trying.

My problem is, however, I don't want to paint with this random brush saying, "Evil! You numbskulls! Why-you-no-read these lesser knowns?"

Sometimes we are far too harsh (Hear me Jeff?). God knows how, but we need to find equilibrium and quit blaming people.

Right now, I'm trying to prepare a thorough review for George's book and work on "Thief" as well as study movies and languages and work with people in the community who need help.

Actually, I'm going to phone up some teenagers to help with my Halloween displays this year. I plan on putting them to work.

So... more Soulshadows.... I'm going to try and get to some reads.

I would say purposefully being ignored is being paranoid.  What I would say is that they aren't feature and they aren't short shorts and there aren't many in-between readers.  Perhaps next time we do a series we should make it one pagers.

No, I'm not paranoid, and since I haven't written my Soul Shadows script, paranoid defintely dosen't apply.  I think it's off though for sure, especially since most of the Soul Shadows writers are very frequent SS contributors and just based on that alone, should garner many more reads from other frequent contributors.

Now, Sandra, I'm not sure what to make of your comments, so I won't say anything...cause I'm just such a nice guy, and it's so hard for me to be mean or harsh.

You are a nice guy, but I feel the need to give you a hard time, like you give others,  because you're missing something and only you know what that is. I wish I knew what it was. 'cause then I'd tell you and we'd both be enlightened, my dear. But let me go on record to say, "That I don't get bad vibes from you at all." Go figure, eh?"

Yes, no one (Yes-no-one sounds funny ) is purposely trying to ignore anyone. Some of us are just trying to work hard at the craft and we need to learn to juggle our lives.

For myself, I know instinctively that I can't work alone. Writing is solitary, but I need to work with people. I need to work outside in the community, and I need to work here virtually with people that I consider as family.

When I bring that statement out into the world, some people look at me, and they know I'm serious and they want to know how that could be. I try and explain, but the best way is for me to help them get connected to people around the world in "whatever endeavor" they feel so inclined towards.

IMO, Simplyscripts is destined towards greatness that we can't even fathom right now. We've got minds on here that just... just are so unbelievably awesome that I can't even get over it now.

Perhaps our next line of thinking should be to create a "system" of merit, whereby individuals who participate in "such and such" an event, are recognized.

We all love recognition. It's our Ego. Let's use our ego to rise above itself and do something good in the world for "Everyoneelse".

I know it is nice to get reads for your work, but I also know that the real satisfaction is in having written it in the first place.

Having said that, I was so unhappy when one of my scripts seemed to be getting ignored that I begged for feedback in the "please read my script" thread!

In the case of Soul Shadows - It didn't really register with me until Pia pointed me in it's direction. I only rarely venture outside of the shorts thread!

I really out to have read more of them than I have - but I really ought to have read more of the OWC ones too (of the three selectees I only read one, much to my embarrassment!).

But there are only so many hours in the day. To read and (properly) comment on short scripts can take me over 2 hours. And I have been asked to do private reads  including a feature.

I would like to read more - but I have to go to work, have food, sleep - and, of course, write!

I would say that some seem to do more than others - I am very grateful to people like Jeff and Pia, and Rendezvous, and others, who have taken the time and trouble to read and comment (sometimes in detail) on my work. These are names that I see on lots of threads and their commitment to SS is what makes this place so great a community.

In other cases there seem to be some on SS with a tendency to respond solely to comments on their own scripts (and not always then!), and not read anyone else's, which I think is a bit unfair.

I try to read work by those who have taken the time to read mine, if they have stuff up, but still have a number I need to get round to. The list is a long one!

If anyone wants me to read a particular script, I am always open to being PM'd to jog me along.

When you see conspiracies and there aren't any - that's paranoia - it doesn't have to deal specifically with you.

If you are planning a Series Three, I would be very interested in taking part.

Is making my interest known here enough or do I need to pm someone?!

Your guidance would be welcome.

Niles,

We aren't planning a Series Three yet.   But keep an eye out and you may see a post about it eventually.

There are often spurts of series writing going on here - you just came about at a very busy time - with back to back OWCs - which is probably why you haven't seen one of them pass by.

While you're waiting, if you'd like to get some extra collaborative writing practice in you are welcome to join us in Thief - we're down a player.

Michael, I never brought anything up about a cospiracy.  I merely said it's almost as if they're being purposely ignored.  That does not make a conspiracy.  It may actually have to do with the fact that Soul Shadows could be viewed as some sort of inner circle, and those that are not in, don't bother reading or reviewing the scripts.

I don't know, but I don't feel paranoid at the time being, and I've even chosen to leave my Ouzi in the house when I venture out.

That's why I don't post any of my features. This site may be great in every way but the fact that shorts are the bread and butter and features are tossed to the side is how it works.

This was pretty much proven when Don shut down "Shorts" and people either disappeared or asked why the board was shut down. It didn't help.

Soulshadows was doomed from the start because it is a series. As someone who has been involved with many series I told the right people this would happen before we began.

It should be noted that the episodes get plenty of listens, though.

A series of scripts created by a community of writers adds to the richness of this site and shows the diversity of challenges that anyone can take part in.

Thank you for the offer - it's much appreciated. If "Thief" wasn't so developed, if I'd joined at the start (and I did look at it), I might have taken you up on the offer, but I will decline in this instance.

I am hoping to do something with the OWC, and then there is the possibility of a 6WC feature as well in November, so I'll probably save my limited energies for them!

Thanks again for the offer though.

Per Jayrex who posted his script....

If you are a member of Circalit, post your Soulshadows scripts (both seasons) in the Teleplay section on Circalit.  I thought that was a great idea.

I thought it would be prudent to put the soulshadows script in that section since I heard the bbc were getting involved with the site. Unfortunately I wasn't sure how to add an additional writer for Bert.

Don't worry about it.  Better to get it out there in whatever form.  Not a big deal to me.

I actually have an account there, but seldom use it (and very few friends -- sniffle), and may look into putting up my Tanis episode over there if you guys think I should.

Hey, it's my tiny, little IMDb!
