what made me love this movie was a scene 'bout 15 min into, one guys trying to bone this oiled up hottie with big oiled up tits so his buddy leaves and turns on his ipod, at first I didn't know what the song was but I recognized it, then the song got louder and louder, then the drums kicked in and I knew it, my eyes lit up like Christmas lights and had a grin from ear to ear, then blasting through out the cinema was Sister Christan by Night Ranger, at that moment I knew this movie was gonna rock, I had a gut feeling, and my gut is never wrong. This movie is gonna deliver.
I perked up in that scene as well.Right then and there I realized that I was in for a treat.
So this movie was about what I was expecting. No better or worse than any of the others, I guess.
Had some nice touches - like all of Jason's traps, tunnels and trip wires, etc. Always wondered how he managed to know where all of his intended victims were, and how he managed to be everywhere at once. Now I know.
Had some problems though. Why did Jason keep Whitney alive? Did I miss something or was this never explained? Thought it was an interesting subplot for an F13 flick, but if there was no reason for him not to kill her, why was she kept in his little dungeon? She didn't seem to do anything for him. She was just kind of there. Am I just an inattentive moron. or was this a huge plot hole?
Second thing. The killings are too evenly spread out. There aren't too many deaths, they just happen so frequently that by the time we get to the climax, the movie doesn't step it up. It starts, reaches a certain level of intensity and stays there right through to the end credits. The stakes aren't raised for the finale, so the ending fell on its face a little.
Other than that, no real problems. As has been pointed out, this version doesn't try to do anything new, but it's also not pretending to be anything but what it is. The new Jason was cool, some of the kills were pretty awesome and the script had an interesting take on the F13 mythology. I'd personally rather watch the older ones than this new one, but it's not a bad way to spend 90 minutes.
I felt that a majority of the kills were uninspired and lacked the creative push this franchise always strived for. There is no moment like the "bed kill" in Freddy vs. Jason or the frozen head smash in Jason X. All of the deaths are either simple stabbings or horribly exaggerated torture scenes (roasting sleeping bags? Bear traps? Seriously?)
Even Jason's iconic "masking" moment was a missed opportunity. I assumed (and hoped) he would get the hockey mask by killing a prankster who was wearing it. Instead, he just finds it in a decrepit shed full of novelty crap, and the movie still makes a big deal out of it! If this wasn't a remake, the audience would be shrugging and asking why all of this emphasis was being placed on such a trivial thing.
Then there was the music. Where the hell was the signature "KI-KI-KI-MA-MA-MA" theme? I think I heard it twice, and both times, it was pretty much with the credits. This hardly felt like a Jason movie because of it.
I'm not even mentioning the times in the film where the director of photography must have fell asleep and made the camera go out of focus.
I will admit that, as much as I was disappointed, there were a few good scenes. The attack on the wakeboarding couple was very well done and surprising, although I wished it would've shown what happened to that damn boat. Maybe it'll appear in the background of one of the future sequels, just driving by.
There was also a good guessing game regarding the film's final girl, and there's a very unexpected death scene that settles the matter.
Overall, though, there were too many opportunities the filmmakers didn't notice or chose to ignore. I was entertained, but very underwhelmed.
I went into it really wanting to like it, but when it's all said and done I was left wondering "If I take away Jason and the title, would this be any different than the abundance of other slasher films I've watched in recent months?"
The answer is no. This got all the hype and the wide release based on that fact only, and the truth of the matter is that this is no better than something like "Hatchet".
I have no idea what the hell you guys are talking about with the Sister Christian part either. The guy was listening to it on his Ipod, and that was over and done before anything actually happened.
Chism, the reason Jason kept Whitney alive is because she looked like his mom. Remember the lock it she picked up? The picture in it was a young Mama Voorhees, and it looks just like Whitney. Wait for the unrated DVD, it'll explain more.
So when they release the sequel, will they call it Friday the 13th 2 or Friday the 13th Part II?
I can imagine the shelves now. Friday the 13th next to Friday the 13th next to Friday the 13th 2 next to Friday the 13th Part 2 next to Friday the 13th 3D next to... probably Friday the 13th 3D since MBV3D did good enough.
But if this first one is a remake of elements of the first 4 movies, that means Part 2 2 will be a remake of part 5, which means 3D 2 will be 6. So by the time we get to remaking Jason X, it will be elements from the first remake.
Friday the 13th is going to collapse in on itself. The black hole will consume us all.
It was hard for me to decide if I liked this movie or not. MY girlfriend and I saw it Saturday, I didn't know what to think of it until I watched the other Fridays again (so I could make up my mind). I made it official, I do like this movie. The new one is more brutal, dark and eerie than the other Friday the 13ths. Good Job Marcus, you remade a cult favorite, and you didn't mess up like Rob Zombie did. I also like how he didn't re-make the first one (I know, I know, a "re-imaging"), but in a way he wrapped up the first three movies into one and he managed to make it work. That is why I liked this, as well as the fact that it somewhat stuck with the cheesy horror movies of today, a homage to the cheesy 80's versions of Friday the 13th. I will be buying this whenever it comes out on DVD. Friday the 13th (2009) 7.2/10
I saw this today and I thought it was pretty rubbish. I even got bored in some bits. This is the first Friday the 13th movie I had seen, so I went in not comparing it with the other films.
I knew what was going to happen before I went in the cinema, which isn't always a bad thing, but it wasn't done in a way which justified it being cliche.
Bad acting, bad character development, okay set, way too much artificial lighting (it didn't even look like moonlight at all), the ending was stupid, and I wont watch it again. I don't really understand how it made so much bloody money.
I have to say I'm not a fan of the genre, so that will sway me liking it or not.
