I think mine got disqualified. I know why, though. One of the three characters in my story was 10-years old. Oh, well. It's probably for the best, anyway. It was a mess. Lol. =)

Knowing my luck, it probably was. Lol. Besides, I rushed it and made it in in the last hour. =)

I'm waiting for him to finish the OWC so I can submit a feature...

Yeah. I want to throw 'Mallory's Friend' up...and maybe one of my full lengths. I'll laugh myself crazy if I finish re-writing (and expanding) my OWC into feature length by the time the submission process is back into gear.

Hey Guys -- I have been too busy to read this new stuff as I would like -- or even monitor the threads, actually.

There is no trouble brewing anywhere, right?

From what I can tell, even our resident bad-boys are offering up solid critiques that are light on the pepper.  Nice to see.

Please drop the mods a note if something gets out of hand -- we'll try to stay on top of it before it snowballs into something unpalatable.

And if any of you guys are really serious about dipping into a rewrite now that page and time limits are off -- drop me a PM and I will try to drop you some notes.

Hello all,

First post ever on Simply Scripts, hoping you'll allow me to stick around...

I'd like to start off by apologizing twice, first for the lack of a title on my OWC entry.  I've been prepping to film a short for the past few weeks now, so that's taken up the majority of my writing time.  I finally had a chance to take a break from my prep work, on a slow Friday at the office, but in going through all of my scripts in progress I couldn't find any inspiration to work on any of them.  Nor could I come up with anything new.  So, I popped onto SS to peruse the script section, looking for anything that could jump start my brain, and I happened upon this awesome challenge and thought I'd give it a shot.  This was 2 PM on Friday the 15th, the due date...  For whatever reason, titles do not come to me easily, so rather than sit around trying to come up with one, I decided to invest all the time that I had to the actual story.  Also, I have noticed a trend in the unproduced script section that suggested the logline would be more important than the title, as far as earning people's trust and getting reads.  Still no "excuse" to not have a title, but that is the "explanation" and I apologize.  It will not happen again.

I would also like to apologize for not having reviewed/replied to any of the other OWC entries as of yet, though I assure you, I have read all of batches 1 through 4 so far.  In reading the general thoughtful follow up posts to each script in the OWC (as well as in the unproduced scripts section in general) it appears to me that most of the folks on here sort of know one another.  You've built a rapport, read each other's work, possibly even collaborated in the past.  I felt it would be disrespectful to you all if I were to chime in as some newb outsider who had yet to even post a script.  I'm also a little shy...  You know, new people.    But, now that this script is up and starting to get a few reads, I'm sure I'll soon be comfortable enough to go back and start commenting on some of the unique, interesting, bizzare and quite good OWC entries that I've read so far.

Thank you for taking the time to be bothered with me and I look forward to gradually becoming a more active member on this board.

Genre:  Horror
Theme:  It was a dark and stormy night
Limitations: You only have three human actors - two male and one female. (adults who can play between the ages of 18 to 80).  One male is in a wheelchair.  All events must occur sometime between October 30th to November 1st.  You can't use the word Halloween.  Everything occurs in and around an abandoned, rundown house.  You can do anything to the house, except burn it down.
You must write a script (properly formatted) between 6 and 10 pages.  No more, no less (courier 12 point font).

You guys are f#cking hillarious.
(Poor Don. Some of you guys owe him a bottle of wine for Christmas, or something.)

Don's clarifications (largely grouped by subject):
- What happens on that dark and stormy night is entirely up to you. Re: You're giving us a really narrow theme. dogglebe
- Deserted house you can't burn down. Re: Can you at least allow us one more location besides the abandoned/rundown house? screenrider
- Deserted house you can't burn down.  Re: Where is the rundown house located? The middle of nowhere? Suburbia? Can we put it where ever we want? Nixon
- Deserted house you can't burn down. Re: How about you get to use an old deserted prison as well?  Dreamscale
- Deserted house. Re: Deserted IHOP or Hamburger Hamlet? dogglebe & Dreamscale
- You can't burn the house down. Re: Can you set fire to the house in any way other than a fireplace? Mr. Blonde
- Clarification Re: Can we burn up the wheelchair, or at least the rubber wheels on the wheelchair? Or is it alright if 1 of the character's eyebrows catch on fire at 1 point in the script? Dreamscale
- Everything occurs in and around an abandoned, rundown house. Re: When you say "in and around the house", how around are we talking? Only the property line, and if so, how do you determine that? What if we write an abandoned house on a 25-acre plot of land including a private lake? Would it count? Mr. Blonde
- It doesn't. It can be barren and uninhabited.  Here, this should help clarify things. Re: Why does the house have to be in the desert? Shelton
- No, you don't have to do anything to the house if you don't want to. Re: Since you said "you can", "anything" includes "nothing" right? I mean do I have to do something to the house at all? khamanna
- You are the screenwriter only.  You will not be directing or producing the script.  Re: CGI? mcornetto
- Yes. Effects are within the budget. Re: Are effects within budget? mcornetto
- Yes, but don't go crazy with it. Re: Can special effects be employed to duplicate characters, such as used in The Prestige and Moon? RayW
- It's horror. Re: Can it be comedy/light horror? Baltis-
- It's horror.  Didn't say I couldn't LOL. Re: Can't be funny at all?  If you laugh even One time it won't meet the requirements? Baltis-
- No children. Re: Are they children or can we make them adults?  Baltis-
- How you use or don't use your talent is entirely up to you.  In short, you have a pool of three actors.  Two male and one female.  One male is in a wheel chair.  How you use them or don't use them is up to you.  Re: Do we have to include all three characters? I know the boy in the wheelchair is a must, what about the other two? Coding Herman
- You have three actors.  Two males.  One Female.  One male is in a wheelchair.  How you use your actors is up to you. Re: Can the three people be zombies? How about just the guy in the wheelchair? stevie
- You have three actors.  Two male, one female.  The male actor is in a wheelchair.  How you use your actors is entirely up to you.  Re: How the heck does the guy in a wheelchair get into a rundown/abandoned house?   If it's so rundown then chances are there's no wheelchair ramp. screenrider
- You have three actors.  How you use them is up to you. Re: Don, it's three characters only, correct? No more, no less? Mr. Blonde
- You have three actors.  How you use them is up to you. Re: You mean, like, up the butt? Shelton
-There are three actors.  There are two males and one female.  How you use them is up to you.  Please note that I've modified the requirements (for the n'th time) to specifically indicate that the three actors are human.  If you have any other questions regarding this, please reference this. Re: When you said we have up to 3 characters between 18-80, that shouldn't preclude non humans.  Are you now saying we cannot include any non humans into our horror script? Dreamscale
- A total first.  You have three actors.  Two actors are males.  They have penises.  One actor is a female.  She does not have a penis. She has a 'sideways smile'.   One male actors with a penis can not walk.  He sits in a wheel chair.  The three actors are human.  How you use them is up to you. Re: What about half-humans? Are you now saying we cannot have an antag that is not human?  screenrider & Dreamscale
- You have three actors.  The actors are human. Re: I too have an animal in my script, he has quite an important part too. Murphy
- The male actor is in a wheelchair. Re: Maybe he doesn't become wheelchair bound till the second page? stevie
- No, I said, You have three (3) actors.  How you use them is up to you. Re: We cannot have any other sort of character to play the role of antag, meaning no creatures, monsters, demons, animals, or ghosts. Dreamscale
- Your actors are human.  How you use them is up to you. Re: You said they all had to be human, meaning no non human characters.  You said no whales, no rats, all human. Did you not? Dreamscale
- Updated the limitations to the theme, "three human actors..." Re: ...the Sperm whale... Dreamscale
- No, I said, there are three human actors.  I did not say three human characters. Re: Three human actors = three human characters*. DarrenJamesSeeley
(Ray's note: Many people seem to have great difficulty distinguishing between ACTORS and CHARACTERS.)
- You can't use the word "Halloween". Re: We can't mention "Halloween"...but...what about Samhain ???? DarrenJamesSeeley

Between 18-80...You're out!

HaHa!  No, a number of scripts missed the age mark or didn't even give an age.

Most people can take a two hour job and string it out to eight hours.
I'll take a two hour job and burn it down to under an hour and screw off for the remaining seven plus hours.

It was a very good catch.
Yes, it did shed light on others, as did most of these.

I would like to thank Ray for including me at the very end . I got a little worried.
He may have taken what I said out of context and taken a jest as a matter of fact, but that's beside the point. I'm in good company.

Unless of course, this becomes the next five hundred and seventy six response thread. Then I will be a party to it  >:(

Howdy, DJ

The post was composed only after I reviewed the given criteria clarifications before I started reviewing scripts this morning and laughed my a$$ off.
I thought the collective "you" were funny as h3ll.
So, I thought I'd share it.

Sadly, I think I'm picking up on a p!ssy tone after having posted it.
I don't know if it's unwarranted guilty consciences, or what.
For a bunch of writers constantly berating each other for "clarity" I often find the great deal of vagaries in replies and accusations irritating.

The list began as simple C&P in chronological order, but as repeated patterns emerged I thought a grouping by subject most useful.
Don's answer to your question was near the chronological end and without peer, thus... it's at the end.

I suggest you post a unique question ASAP for the FEB 2011 OWC.   ;)
Posted by: rendevous, October 19th, 2010, 5:25pm; Reply: 21
I'd like to thank Ray as well. Why? Good question. I just liked the way the sentence looked when written down.

You, Clint are already party. As am I. Shall we set up a posse and paint a town red. Literally. I think I might enjoy that.

On the more serious note of A minor I've found the scripts for this one to be generally better than before for me. May be for many reasons, or it might just be me.

Anyway. They are. So, well done. Like my dinner was. I'm rubbish at cooking. Why the fuck do I live ten miles from the nearest takeaway? I'll be like Rooney when he joins City - scared of going out in town and definitely not ordering a take out. Not unless he wants to give his guts a clear out.

Er, sorry. Yes. Well done everyone.

Rooney. Rooney!

An update.  Since I accidentally posted a script that fell slightly outside the challenge requirements, I will be posting a couple other scripts that also fell slightly outside the requirements.  However, the one requirement: one script per person I will hold to.  Additional scripts submitted by the same author will get posted after all the OWC scripts are submitted.

Also, open submission will resume after all the OWC scripts are live.

Guys, they'll be in the last batch, particularly if you submitted them late (not after the deadline late, just late in the week late. Not late late, just late. Late). Mine's in there too.

Advance warning: mine isn't very good. I nearly didn't submit, before deciding to adopt a "better to have an entry than nothing" position. That's not to say that it isn't an enjoyable six pages, just that I already know the comments it'll get.

So yeah, I'm patiently waiting for my beating!

EDIT: What Don said, basically. Minus the endearing self-deprecation. :)

Story was very usual. Nothing new.  Characters were sterotypical.  At six pages you have no excuse for not expanding things.  Good job but it needs work.

Yeah, I finished my script an hour before deadline (I'm a procrastinator) so it'll be interesting to see how this turns out.

Oh and I didn't have time to write a decent logline. Sorry!

Well I did have time, but like I said - I'm a procrastinator.

Yes, it did shed light on others, as did most of these.

If you were clever enough to get away with it then you could but you'd have to be pretty clever to get it past Don.

Stevie, it depends on whether or not I caught on it was you (or anyone) posting a second script under an assumed name.  The rule was, one entry per person, unless you can get away with posting a second script using a fake name and I don't catch it.

Overall, I would say this turned out to be an excellent OWC and I was especially impressed by how civilised and numerous the reviews turned out to be.

Do you think that had to do with the fact that this OWC wasn't anonymous?

And special thanks to Don for putting it all together.  Yay Don!!

Absolutely, I've torn up some scripts in the OWCs. I couldn't do it knowing who I'm talking to. Makes it more personal. Then I'd see who wrote it and say "shit".

Back to Anonymous! Make the mods work!

Agreed.  Anonymous is the way to go.  Makes the reviews more brutally honest, that's for sure.  But, I also like guessing who wrote what and that buildup of suspense until the names are revealed.

So when's the next one? ;D

When will Don select the script to be presented by iScript?

I knew in the past, Don will email people who participated and let them pick three or four favorites. I didn't participate this time around, but I still want to have a say by picking my favorites.

Anyone got the email yet? Or is Don just gonna select one by himself?
Posted by: khamanna, October 25th, 2010, 11:27am; Reply: 58

I'll never grow up. I was born fully grown. Unfortunately I was also born with fucking Tourettes and the sense of humour of a fourteen year old. The word 'knob' still makes me giggle.

I got the email. I was reading others but I'm just gonna pick now.

Can I choose mine three times or more?

Do I really have to pick others?

Where do I live?

Where am I?

Are those my feet?

Er, I'll get me shoes...

Do we vote for the best screenplays for film or the ones that sound the best read out loud as an iScript reading? Combo?

Ray,

You just choose what you think will be best. Obviously mine. Don't worry, I'll pay for my ego in limbo. Should it still exist by the time I get there.

Harumph.

If I was you I'd choose mine. But you could choose Balt's, or DB's, or Johnnyboy's, or whoever. All good. And all votes count.

Florence and Kasabian won tonight. There is a God. And he smiles on those who respect.

There's a drumming sound inside my head
Each time that you're around
I swear that you can hear it
It makes such an almighty sound...

if Kate and Audrey reject me as they have I may just have to focus my attentions on Ms Welsh. Oh yes... What, she has a restraining order on me already? The fucking... clever little tart. Oh dear. I suspect I may go back to delusional posts on SS instead. It's a lot easier than getting arrested all the time outside some bint's gates I tell ya.

As for the iScript determination -- if Don does what he has done in the past, nobody here makes that decision.

The good folks at iScript get a batch of 3-4 top vote-getters, and they decide which one they want to do.

Which seems a remarkably fair way to do it.

I got the email last night. I gave him a list of three.

I hope he doesn't mind, I'll post it:

Quoted from Don

Everyone,

First and foremost, I want to thank you for taking the challenge.

The October One Week Challenge is my favorite challenge of the year.  This year did not disappoint.  This was the best challenge thus far, not only in terms of the quality of the scripts received, but also the interpretation of the theme and limitations.  I also enjoyed to questions (and grief) about the limitations.  I hope everyone took my responses in the spirit in which they were intended.  I do apologize for any ambiguity in the limitations, e.g., ages of the three actors and the appearance of animals.

I've already read all the scripts and I am going through the process of selecting three to send over to iScript.  iScript will select one of the three to audio perform (if I have your permission).   I really want to stress that the selected script isn't "The Winner" or necessarily "The Best" script.  The selected script is one that I enjoyed reading and most closely fit within the limitations of the challenge.

I would like each of you to let me know which three or so scripts, of the scripts you have read,  were your favorites.  The usual questions are:

Q: "Can my script be one of the three?"
A: Yes, if your script was one of your favorites.

Q: I only read five scripts.  You still want my favorites?
A: Yes.

Q: I have more (or less) than three favorites
A: That is fine, let me know what your favorites are.

Q: One of the scripts I liked didn't fit the criteria.
A: I still want to know which are your favorites.

Posted by: rendevous, October 25th, 2010, 5:15pm; Reply: 64
Obviously they'll chose mine.

If they are nice I may even give them audio so they can get the accents right.

The future is not set. It's what you make it.

Oh shite. I may have just ruined mine.

Dedums.

I didn’t succeed with this challenge, but it’s good to see that it has gone well.

The main reason I didn’t find the time to enter was that I was working on a feature version of my entry into the last OWC. Today I completed polishing up my first draft of a feature script for “Dumb Animals”.

There’s no way I’d have written this if it wasn’t for the OWC, so thanks to Don and everyone else here.

A few pisstakes and whatnot aside, I think I'm done.
I noticed today I had missed batch 6 entirely, so if any one else feels gyped PM me and I'll run over your OWC.
If it still survives I'll run over it again!

Guh-DUNK! Guh-DUNK!

My God.
45 of 'em, counting the p!ssers.

At this rate, next year's should have an eight page maximum.

I need to finish up a few but largely I'm done.  I was impressed with most of the entries, though.  I couldn't believe the level of quality some of these scripts were written with in a week.  I wish we'd have more of these OWC's because I'd participate in everyone.  It was a great way for me to get back in the game since I've got much more time to devote to writing during the winter months I'm ready to have a go at this again.
Posted by: greg, October 28th, 2010, 1:07am; Reply: 82
Got all of them read from the active writers.  At least I think.  If I missed you then let me know.  There were a couple I didn't get to because it didn't look like the author was around so I decided to stop there.  Overall these were enjoyable.  Probably one of the more well rounded challenges in terms of quality.  Maybe the removal of anonymity can be attributed to that?

Greg
Posted by: Coding Herman, October 28th, 2010, 1:39pm; Reply: 83
The removal of anonymity definitely helped. The last OWC was awful! Almost half of the scripts were pissers.
Posted by: dogglebe (Guest), October 28th, 2010, 1:48pm; Reply: 84
Maybe Don can suggest that pissers won't be allowed to play in future OWC's.

Phil
Posted by: Dreamscale (Guest), October 28th, 2010, 1:52pm; Reply: 85
I'm on board with that.  No more pissers!

But, I personally like not knowing who wrote what.  Let the script speak for itself, not the writer.
Posted by: rendevous, October 28th, 2010, 2:13pm; Reply: 86
I like the OWC for several reasons.

We've all gotta write a script based on whatever is decided within limits.

If there are strict limits on things then it tends to get way more interesting.

Tobacco advertising in England in the 1980s was a prime example. As they couldn't show the actual pack or someone smoking they had to get inventive. Some of the Silk Cut and Benson & Hedges ads bordered on genius. And I hate adverts but even I'll credit them with that.

If you wanna be a pro writer you have to be able to write whatever is wanted by the producers. Otherwise they'll hire someone else. Then you're back in the dole queue while the replacement will be in the credits with their work on the small or, if lucky, the big screen.

The thing very successful writers and nobodies like me have in common is this: we can both write whatever we want.

The successful pro however earns kudos and millions, while I earn enough to get drunk again. Sometimes I have to get the credit card out too.

I read only about 6 or so of these. Some I didn't comment on. Not because I didn't want to, but rather because I read them on something I couldn't type up a review on. Balt and Greg's come to mind. Of the ones I did read, I thought they were all pretty good. I can see though that it might get boring to read all of them since they might be quite similar given the assignment...
Posted by: Coding Herman, October 29th, 2010, 2:08pm; Reply: 88
I think all of the entries are contemporary horror. When was wheelchair invented? 'Cause it might add a new twist if the story is set back in the days or in the future.
Posted by: rendevous, October 29th, 2010, 3:00pm; Reply: 89
It was invented around the sixth century. Although then they probably resembled carts more than modern wheelchairs. I imagine The Ride was also rougher.

Wow. Forgot I did this and hadn't tacked it on here.

I compiled this for a trope reference for next year.
Often people complain/grieve/unduly note too many stories along the same lines, so I wanted to see where the percentiles plopped to give people the opportunity to "consider" something "less utilized" the next go-round.

Assuming you even care, if I categorized your story in the wrong trope (and some were tough to determine) changing them is no big whup.

They're pretty broad categories.

HaHa...well done, Ray!  Well done.

My script is a definite R rated script, though, for graphic language, drug use, and sexual innuendo.

You can't click the title of the script and be taken directly to it.

Oh my God. Only once I'd read it through did I realise that you've not only summarised and categorised...

...you've also alphabetised.

Every day you terrify me anew.

Sorry to be an pedantic arsehole (not an asshole) Ray but in 'Cleansed', the antags were husband and wife not siblings.  And there was no evil spirit involved.

I know all your data has to be spot on( I'm a stickler for that too!) so thought I'd mention it...

Corrected.
No need to be any kind of hole or for apologies.

You get what you pay for.
Just ask. No big whup.

Serbian provides the better of most of these translations.

INT. SECOND FLOOR HALLWAY - NIGHT
WHAM! The old man is thrown to the hard floor at the top of
   the stairs. He groans.
                      OLD MAN
            You...f#cking...f#cks...
Mara places the wheelchair on the top step and returns the
   old man in it.
                      GRAHAM
Maybe we shoulda just takin' a
            chance and killed 'im.
                      MARA
            It won't work if he's dead. He's
            gotta be alive.

LOL! Yeah, I'll be looking for that to air right after Dora the Explorer.  ;)
