In Pia's defense, Hitler is from the 30s/40s, just like the classic horror monsters. |

Interesting. As folks are bound to ask, what is the cut-off for a "classic" monster? I mean, in terms of years they've been around. Wolfman and the mummy and stuff like that, sure. But what about Jason? Zombies? Freddy Krueger? Is Chucky a "classic"? Or (God forbid) the Leprechaun? Or maybe just clarify that "classic" is defined by each individual author -- then let folks argue about what actually qualifies once the scripts are up? |

I assume classic is the 30s/40s Universal Pictures monsters: The Werewolf, Frankenstein, the Mummy, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula.
I guess it's how Don wants to define "Classic". Is Jason a monster? |

When I think of 'classic monsters' I think of the Universal horror film characters, the majority of which are public domain. I'm still hoping for a Creature From The Black Lagoon update, simply due to that character not being commonly tapped as others. The Universal remake is still in development, but who knows when they'll get around to it.
But I wonder if "classic monsters" might also refer to any of the public domain B films of the 40s and 50s, like Attack Of The Giant Leeches (1959) or something like Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde.

I'm serious, Dreamscale. When you take up space making 30 lunatic posts about Stevie and his shorts, you really need to stop busting my chops here. Some would say Michael Myers, at 30+ years, is a "classic" movie monster. It is not a dumb question. Buzz off. |

Then it's agreed. Stevie's god forsaken jean shorts are hereby retired from SS. May they burn in Hell.
This sounds like a good challenge. Regarding the "classic" question, I'd say Jason, Freddie Kruger and Michael Myers have reached iconic status, which would make them fair game. |

While it's a pretty ok challenge, I'd love some more criteria squeezed in. Like the classic horror char has to....or is stuck in...etc.
Anyway, looks like my raptor tale is back on the agenda! Lol lol |

I'm in agreement with Rick on the date, if you're going to make a cut-off. 1960 seems to be a smart choice and fully encompasses what I think the intention of this OWC was meant to. |

It is not, and I would have to agree that I would include Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, and even your main man, The Tall Man, into the "classic movie monsters" list. |

My comment was actually made in loving memory of Movie Poet. No matter how simple Chris made the assignment, there would still be a hundred questions about what he really really meant and if this and this and this would be allowed. If he said comedy/cheese, people would demand he defined comedy since everyone's sense of humor is different and what kind of cheese did he mean? At what stage in the cheese making process does it start to turn into cheese. Lol! I think you knew that. |

I read classic to be different to vintage
Freddy etc would be fine to me
Anyway the core issue will be the modern twist |

What's the point of the "modern twist" if the "monster" is itself modern?
Surely the modern twist strongly suggests that we are talking about the classic monsters fro the past? |

I agree that you can argue that Michael, Freddy, Jason etc are iconic, but the 'classic monsters' are usually defined as the Universal ones that have already been called out earlier on in the post.
Lots of inspiration in the old ones anyway! |

Since one of the points of the exercise is to come out of this with a viable script for production, using Krueger, Jason or Chucky, while arguably 'classic' horror monsters (perhaps 'silver' age classic), would limit the marketability of the script. - Don |

Easy choice for me... Attack of the Crab Monsters, since it's on the pic link. I may write it in black and white however for the sake of nostalgia, as well as have the crab monsters look really fake. Does each crab monster need to have a name or can I just call them "CRAB MONSTER 1", "CRAB MONSTER 2", or would it be better to use names like, "GIANT CRAB MONSTER", CRAB MONSTER JUNIOR", PAPA CRAB MONSTER", "BEARDED CRAB MONSTER", etc? Looking very forward to reading all these...even Bert's!! |

I'll take that. If I do one, still not sure, it is a monster not pictured anywhere on that link that I can see.

As usual I'm drawing a blank at the start. I don't have a problem working out what a classic monster is, what's confusing me a bit is this:
One good makeup effect.
A lot of the 'classic' monsters would take up that one good makeup effect and then leave nothing for gore etc. So is that 'One good makeup effect' in addition to the monster?

The "One Good Makeup Effect" is intended to be for the monster.
p.s. Second script received already. Also good.

Just started mine, and I'll do the best I can ...but even I'm not that good. Somebody musta been sitting on the Wolfman's shorts for a few months or something. Either that or the Gill Man peed in the pool. |

I have decided that my monster does qualify as classic.
I think I'm in. I haven't done one of these in years. Fun. |

Horror can be anything that puts a little scare into you. It doesn't have to be blood and guts. Also, it's good to try things that you normally don't write. Give it a shot and I promise to give comedy a try if that comes up one day. |

Dave, have a look at Halloween Baby in Oct 14 challenge, Johnny put lots of comedic elements in that one and scored a mug to boot.. |

There's plenty of Horror films that have comedic elements or are downright funny (intentionally or otherwise)...
And don't forget.., classic Universal 'Horrors' include Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein and a number of others too...
I'd say go for it Dave |

Just started to think about this and every idea I have is comedy. These characters and the old films are such rich territory for spoof. Eg the second step daughter of frankienstein
Anyway, I'll put the horror cap back on |

I've got an idea, working on it at the moment. I think I've bitten off more than I can chew though. I fully expect most responses to mine to be along the lines of "WTF is going on?"
Best of luck everyone, I'm looking forward to reading these. |

No clue yet here, but not much thought put into it either.
I have a 5 AM business flight to Nashville, Wednesday morning, staying the night in Franklin, and getting back late Thursday afternoon.
This is not going to help...

Yah. My five cents here: while I certainly view more modern characters - like Krueger, Meyers, Jason, etc - as classic, I kind of question whether that's really the spirit of this challenge. And even if it is (yes, I know Don said it was okay), if the goal is production, there's a copyright issue with anything newer. Which means better to stick to Mummy material (or simliar.) --J (W) |

Those were just examples I had no intention of using. I was feeling out the crowd (and Don) for something a bit less conventional -- a little more recent, but at the same time, certainly old-school. First draft done. You suckers better be bringing your A-game. |

My first draft completed today. I'm trying harder in this than the last OWC... nothing thrown off this time. Real effort. Not sure I could call it my A-game... but it's something approaching that. |

I'm only on page 3 and struggling.
Every OWC I think to myself, this time I'll do a pisser, I've always wanted to do a pisser and have a laugh but then a proper idea forms in my head and won't let go. Then I try to write it and it always comes out kicking and screaming like the newborn out of Alien 4.
I don't think I'll be bringing my A-game but I've got a note from my mum explaining why. |

I chose not to comment onthe 7wk challenge in part due to my script being delayed. It's hell being stuck on p81, middle of a cliffhanger and your main computer is down. I'm using a laptop for net and an older puter with FD to do the current OWC. Besides, I would read about your giant sand crab script. I'll read it 14 times...just to be sure it was you Jeff |

ever have one of those 'the good idea the night before ends up a pile of sh&$e'? hey ho, it happens. Like jeff I'm travelling this week so time is now very short. Down to a three day challenge !! Quoted from Horror Don One entry per person/team (unless you think you can slip another one by me.) |
It is generally considered to be poor form -- particularly in the larger OWCs -- as is the October one. Everybody wants to get reads, and double-dipping kind of steals those reads from others. |

I agree. Some people try hard to read all the scripts. It can be quite annoying to find out someone entered more than one. Especially if that person didn't read many scripts in return. |

I didn't really think much about this, just wrote the first thing which came to my mind, took me like 3 hours I think. Nothing I really expect serious notes or something, I most probably won't invest time to rewrite it further anyways. It's just for the fun in taking part in one of the OWCs, cause I haven't done so before |

Maybe we should make One-Day-Challenges next time, would stop people from racking their brains all week and running out of time to write something |

Bad news about that no multiple entries thing.
I lied before, I've actually already written three!
Really pleased with all of them, as well. Oh, well. |

I would just add that if you try, submit your strongest script first. Anything else I'll hold until after the owc is over and then post. Don |

No...I was completely joking, assuming The Don would see and respond. Bad news for me, but it's based on great news for me. I won't be able to enter this OWC and I'm totally bummed, but I just closed on a new house an will be moving in Friday. I'm out! I'll read and provide much praise as always, though. |

Good luck to everyone taking part. I was halfway through a feature about a Mummy, ISIS, and Dr. Phibes, but cheers, Don. Unreal. Now I have to wait and see if anyone has written anything better. The cheek! Anyway, good luck to everyone. |

I'm gonna try to get my first draft finished tonight. I have a killer head cold so this may be the best thing I've ever written or something so ilegible people think it's written in Klingon. |

Three, what? three? How could you come up with more than one? I have half of an idea which I'm trying to stretch into an idea and it wouldn't listen... Anyway, I wrote almost a page yesterday. Trying to come up with another five. I'm hoping for two more pages today. |

Sometimes you get a lot of ideas, sometimes you get none.
I used to be a very, very slow writer. I would prevaricate over everything, trying to torture ideas into behaving.
Writing was like getting blood from a stone.
I think I often tried to do too much with shorts as well. Trying to squeeze too much story into too few pages.
I find now that if I just start writing on paper about pretty much anything, then an idea will come. The story will take a shape. Sometimes a very simple one, sometimes a bit more complex.
I could write a story about each and every one of the characters from past films, tbh. What fears do they represent? From a male point of view, or a female point of view? Who would be most scared of them? Or most attracted to them? Why? What aspect of them would most scare me as an individual? What do they say about society, or humanity?
Ask enough questions and there will always be a story, somewhere.
For instance: Dracula.
The original novel was about fears that affected the future of Victorian Britain. Fears of immigration and the dangers foreigners would bring to England. About awakening female sexuality and how it would affect the social order. Fears about the corruption of the human soul and the subverting of the Spirit to the Flesh.
Instantly you've got some ideas: Who would be most afraid of immigration?..some Nationalist? Perhaps he believes there's something not quite right about the flood of refugees coming into the country...maybe the story has modern parallels with the fear of ISIS terrorists entering the country amidst Syrian refugees. Or you've got a guy terrified about Sex who starts to see all women as Vampires, just waiting to suck his energy. Maybe it's real, maybe it isn't.
Pick a villain, work out what he/she is all about, and there will be a endless supply of possible stories. Obviously, some better than others.
Sorry for the writing 101, just thinking out loud!

I went out to my fish pond on Saturday morning after the OWC announcement, and there was blood spatter all over the deck. I don't know what happened there, but something definitely got eaten there during the night. Took me about 4 seconds to see all kinds of scenarios involving the creature from the black lagoon. Sometimes, ideas just appear and demand that you write something. |

Spatter! Not splatter! My theory is that the Heron took a water moccasin. Fish usually don't bleed a whole lot. I'll tell you what though, if I ever fell in while cleaning the pond or something, which my husband predicts, I probably would die of a heart attack. Way too many creepy things in that murky water. |

For some reason I read it like you went to work on Saturday morning and there was a blood splatter all over the desk. And it gave you ideas. I got really scared of you. |

Mine is in.
I chose to present the simplest one.
The second one I wrote is my personal favourite, but it's slow burning and melancholy. I took the view that those sort of scripts don't tend to find much a home in the hurly-burly of the OWC.
The third was a fun affair somewhere between The Leech Woman and Cthulu.
Good luck all, looking forward to reading them. I shall attempt to read them all. |

No more time left as I'm travelling tomorrow. Like many this is actually a few days challenge when you break it down. Something we forget when we start to review.
it's actually better than i expected, but then again others may disagree...we've all been there.
thanks Don for the chance. Appreciated.

Stevie, I loved Sophocles - Good old Balt put me on to it a way back. Sadly the company ceased to exist quite a while ago now. I still have it on my desktop but started using FD. Don, no countdown clock this time around? And Fen (Max,) good to see you pop your head up. |

Before I wiped my comp, I saved Soph to hard drive but couldn't get it going again. Found a beta version in net but it wouldn't activate. Yeah I loved it too. But Trelby is good and useable. Better than Celtx and produces good PDFs too. |

Okay, so I've submitted, it's okay but I've just this minute had a much better idea... Wonder if I can write it in the remaining time and submit it!?!?
My feature has definitely taken a back seat this week! |

I'm in too, yay. I'm actually quite happy with it, had time to write a first version of the middle and then throw it away for being rubbish and come up with something much better - so hopefully people will enjoy it. Whatever the reaction, it's been a really useful exercise in trying to write tension and suspense, so that's been worth it in itself (if it worked, good, if not, I can learn from it). Don't take these comps for granted, people, or indeed SS as a whole - this kind of feedback and ability to learn from others is invaluable! Advance request: let's focus on story and characters, please, rather than tiny issues of format. I know they're the low-hanging fruit for any review, but also the easiest to fix and therefore in some ways the least useful. And rolled eyes in advance to anyone who's written a 'pisser' (or that's what it used to be called, anyway.) |

I barely found a decent enough idea. Stumbled upon it Thursday night and cranked 90% of it out. Now I'm just finishing and tightening things up. This is the first time I've contributed to consecutive OWCs, if I recall correctly. I apologize for not reading and reviewing more scripts last time, I promise to do better for this challenge.

I agree. I'm going to stick to commenting on whether a story works for me. Btw, 'pisstake' is the correct term, i.e., 'taking the piss' (not to be confused with, taking the piss out of) - just ask Stevie but of course like a lot of things it morphed into straight micturition. Bet you're happy I commented on that. I'd like to suggest also, if you 'can't get past the first line/page/paragraph - 'I'm out' that comment is so boring to read. Not commenting at all imh is the better option. It gets annoying and boring and is in no way constructive to the writer.

Hey all,
Greenhorn Rookie here, both on the SS board and in the script writing world. I came across this site and challenge randomly yesterday and thought this would be a solid way to practice the script writing skills and pick the brains of the rest of you on here. I submitted my own rough first go at this. I wasn't quite sure as to how to approach the "Classic Monsters" as classic to me is the Freddy, Jason, Leatherface time era that I grew up watching, but I threw in a hodge podge of different Classic Monsters. Hope it works, but I look forward to anyone's constructive and helpful critiques and certainly look forward to reading everyone else's work. |

Be nice to see some good variations in monsters used in the scripts. Putting modern twists on old concepts are the best. |

Wouldn't you know it, I'm having second thoughts about my ending, I have something better in mind, and when this is over I'll most likely have the new ending under my own name. The current ending is fine, don't get me wrong, but it's just one of those last minute afterthoughts.
If someone brings it up, that idea would already be under consideration. If nobody brings it up, that's another story.
But I'll bring it up in a week after reveal. |

Yes, this, so much this! It gets me when someone posts “ORPHANS ON THE FIRST BLOCK! TERRIBLE SLUGLINES, PAGE 1 AND I’M OUT!” If you are out and have nothing to contribute, just don’t comment. These are vomit drafts and things like format and typos can be fixed with a polish, if the plot and characters just are not working the writer needs feedback as to why and maybe even a few suggestions to fix the story.

Hey Zac, welcome to the magically weird and whacky world of Simply Scripts. Get ready for some honest, brutal but (hopefully) constructive feedback. And just remember the ‘rules’ of the challenge, it has to be low budget and only have one good make-up effect. If you mix a load of classic monsters together you may blow those rules out of the water. Best of luck and I hope you enjoy the experience! -Mark |
