I think Ray goes on too much about being a producer. Me and some others kinda questioned the point of the OWC. One camp thinks it's fun and good, the other thinks its ... gonna be made into a film. The OWC is just for laughs, light entertainment after a torrid year of working and writing hard. The debate talked about why the OWC is fun and good and a break for writers, the wannabe producer said what he said. Think we concluded with that. Much ado about nothing.
I mean, in all respect to RayW, he does not act like a producer. He's a jilted writer. I think as soon as he comes to terms with that, it will benefit him and he will grow out of it. But he wants to make movies out of his bedroom. He's acting silly. He needs a slapdown more than any writer.
Now not to make fun of RayW, I appreciate he's taken a lot of time to do what he does, but it's kind of pointless. You can make stats on all things, but you need someone human to write a story. He just wants robots... to make a low budget garage-set movie.
And even if this dreamer had the funds... he'd blow it.
So RayW, why don't you come back down to planet earth with the rest of us. You're not a producer. You're a dreamer. Stop thinking you're above anyone else and come back down to this level.
Truth is, while bad format is noticeable it doesn’t bother me.
I'm glad somebody said it.
I hate "technical reviews" - the kind where the reader has only checked out 2 or 3 pages, put the script down, and goes on a tangent about formatting. Don't these people get tired of regurgitating the same old bullshit (formatting)? Can't you explain something so many times before you want to blow your brains out? I mean, how many times can you read a page or two of someone's script, and then spew the same shit you literally just said 500 posts before?
Don't get me wrong. I spot all of the issues that could be spotted as I'm reading too, but I'm not going to waste my time explaining what the fuck is wrong with every little thing down to capping the intro of characters and all of that shit. It's a waste of fucking time. One, most of these "newb writers" don't even see what you're saying. Two, the other half of them are stupid, ignorant jerk-offs who are rigid as fuck and continuously spout the same thing: Well, Tarantino does it, so it must be fine. [Insert some other famous writer/director] formats his script however he wants, so that means I can do whatever I want, blah blah blah blah.
You know what I do when I open a feature with bad formatting? I shut the fucking thing out. I don't even comment on anything, though, I will admit that sometimes I'm so desperate for a good story (I hate it when SS is dead), I will get past the bad formatting - unless it's atrocious - and try to read the script anyway. But I do gotta say most of the time it's not even bad format that makes me put down a script! It's that first action line or opening scene that is just so fucking bland, and I mean bland as all fuck. It really is ridiculous how many scripts I open up and the very first scene is such a goddamn snooze fest...
Pia has mentioned the words "fun" and "in the old days" a couple of times and I gotta say I sure do miss the old days on here (I have been a member on and off for some years). I miss the days when "technical reviews" didn't run rampant and everyone just delved into character & story instead. The old fun days when you logged on and saw that people like Bert or Abe from LA commented on a script and you couldn't wait to see what they had to say about it because you knew they really had something to say other than 'I started reading this but put it down after seeing FADE IN: on the right side of the page.'

Dead By Dawn is right. I started off with some horrific terrible stories. And I mean, they are terrible by screenwriting standards. Look up at my crappy scripts if you need to lol. But thanks to encouraging words from here, I went on. Now, I'm quite content and am working on something that's not quite my dream job but a sure passage towards it.
If I get that particular job, then I think my life is complete, haha. But now it is a possibility... insanely real.
I;m working on five different projects, one is taking the main at the moment , but from the guy who wrote "Season Of The Devil" back in 2003/2002 and posted in here just looking for a chance... and Malevolent 1 2 and 3... those reviewers made me feel good. A reason for writing. I would never have gone on if they said " this is shit". I owe this site everything. If you're good, I think you will get a deal
So then to listen to this jap-ass,jackass, RayW, talk about how writers owe him... pfft... get the fuck out.
The last thing a writer needs is a bullshitter. The last thing they need is a bullshtting producer.
You can provide silly cartoons all you like. Facts are you are not a producer. You have no history. Nothing to back your ridiculous, outlandish claims of making a short script into film. You, as a producer, are an epic failure. Why would anyone want to work for you? What do you offer?
I do take the OWC seriously. Aside from the shark one, which is still quite a serious effort and could be easily made. Despite taking it seriously, writing will always be fun for me, it's what I enjoy more than anything else.
I did argue in this thread until I realised Phil only did it to stir up some shit. So I backed away. It's one of those arguments nobody can win. Everyone has their own way of reviewing and should be allowed to say how they really feel without fear of the PC brigade showing up, blaming them for a lack of newbs signing up.
If this forum was a little easier to sign up to, we'd get a lot more people here. Don has it the way he has it, I'm guessing, just for that very reason. He doesn't want any old idiot figuring it out and signing up. If it's just about spammers, there's an easier way of dealing with them than admin-only registration. You simply put a 'must answer' question in the registration process. Something only a human could answer. CAPTCHA does not work.

I'm a noob around here. And I'll be taking part in the OWC. I've read this thread most days in anticipation and to be honest, I've gotten a good giggle out of it. I'm pretty sure my formatting will be ok. No doubt people will find something wrong with it though. Right now I'm more concerned about getting a good story written. If I do that and my formatting is acceptable then I'll be happy.
I'll also do my best to review as much as I can and I promise it'll be constructive.
Now, can we stop this silly bickering and all just get along

Everything I write, I write for potential production. I've had two OWC scripts produced and a third recorded as an audio file. If you write for shits and giggles, then that's all you end up with.
The thing is I don't see any newbs following this thread. You could argue they're reading it and haven't signed up yet, but I doubt it very much.
The following is a pm I've received from a newer member of SS

It's crazy because I have seen posts like that (and then some). "Technical reviews" irritate the shit out of me.

"Technical reviews" as I call them have also been running rampant around here for quite a while. It sucks because this place has always been more interesting and more fun when people were delving into CHARACTER & STORY. I am tired of these technical reviews after they have only just read one or two pages. ONE OR TWO PAGES!!!! Give me a break.
I want to scream this so bad in the October thread, but I'm afraid I'll get shit for it....
