What kind of a turnout do you all reckon there will be (amount of entries)?
Sweet. I like the way that works out. Scripts will be in by the 24th and we have Halloween 'week' to read through them. There's usually over 20 for the OWC, could be over 30 or even 40.
I'm at 75 in my feature and will likely finish over the next two days. I'd do it tomorrow only I've got a meeting for a few hours.
Anyway, I'm good for whenever. Looking forward to it... or not, I'm easy either way. I don't need an excuse to write... but it's always nice to have one, I suppose.
Maybe, for this OWC, people won't try so hard to bash scripts. Newer, inexperienced writers who try to challenge themselves don't need to be discouraged by those who who comment that they've stopped reading after half a page. Or just to criticize a clunky logline.
My tech pet peeves...I can't stand Cut to's, Smash Cuts, Dissolves...that will stop me from reading. It's not the writer's place to add camera directions. I find them obnoxious.
"We sees, we hears" also drive me nuts but it won't stop me from reading. It's more of an annoyance of lazy writing...or newbie writing.

Might be good rules in general. Phil
Sound advice. If you can't get past the first page/half page - you're better off not commenting at all imh.
If you publicly comment that you couldn't read on cause it's a load of crap that's not constructive in any way and is just a way of blowing your own trumpet re how knowledgeable you are.
Examples: INT. CABIN BEDROOM - DAY EXT. CORN FIELD - NIGHT INT. CAVE - DAY EXT. MOUNTAIN LAKE - NIGHT INT. CARNIVAL HAUNTED HOUSE - DAY EXT. RURAL HIGHWAY - NIGHT
I always come out of self-induced "writer's exile" for these. I don't even try to kid myself anymore.

I think the last October challenge had a low bar of entry. 6 page minimum, something to do with a witch, in a genre that seems to be a favorite around here. A no-dialogue challenge might be a bit more of a hurdle. It'll be interesting to see what the criteria yields.
One thing that was a bit unfortunate to see was, despite the high entry count, the number of reviews per script stayed more or less flat. There was a small group reading a lot that week, and a larger group reading only a few or not at all.
Although I could care less about log lines as I believe producers have more practical considerations I will cop to telling a writer I've ditched a submission on page one or two due to A) DIY homemade tab & margin formatting is industry unacceptable, at least use Celtx for free, or B) gross violations of multiple spec screenplay format conventions.
Saying that you stopped reading after two pages is discouraging to the writer. It doesn't matter why.
Another option would be to not write anything at all. There will be people who read the entire short who will include whatever you would say after reading one or two pages.
Problem is, they don't know they're 'skank' writers when they submit. But when they read reviews of their work, calling their scripts abortions, then they will probably leave. And that doesn't help anyone.
If I can't be constructive I just don't leave a comment. And I try to be respectful in my constructive comments. No reason to be a pr1ck. Unless you are a pr1ck and just can't help yourself.
